The Wisconsin Territory was created BY Michigan gaining statehood. It all used to be Michigan Territory, but usually when a territory becomes a state the less populated part of the territory gets sectioned off from the populated part that becomes the state, and renamed. Wisconsin Territory was the renamed remainder of Michigan Territory leftover after the state of Michigan was made. So at the time the whole UP was already part of Michigan Territory, and the government was just changing where the dividing line that would create Wisconsin Territory would be.
The eastern tip of the UP from Mackinac to Sault-St-Marie was already getting populated and was clearly going to become part of the State of Michigan. The only change was to set the cutoff line of how much of the peninsula the state of Michigan was going to get. It was further west than originally expected. So the Toledo incident didn't cause Michigan to end up with a UP of some sort. That was going to happen anyway. It just caused it to get a much bigger UP when originally it was going to be just the tip.

On one hand I'm happy to see Michigan in a video, on the other hand. ugh. This is one of the worst efforts to explain this situation that I've seen. This video seems like someone tried to rush out a new video to meet a deadline and did the minimal amount of effort to make it good.
The references to Michigan-ders instead of MichiGANders. The seeming reference that Milwaukee and Detroit are the capitals of the Wisconsin and Michigan. And the biggest issue of seemingly thinking that the state of Indiana and its citizens is a reference to American Indians and so changed it to be Native Americans.

I just came here to point out before even watching the video, Wisconsin used to be a part of the Michigan Territory. The upper peninsula was never part of Wisconsin, and after Michigan became a state which was fast-tracked in an election year, we were given the upper peninsula as a consolation prize after fighting over Toledo with Ohio. After Michigan became a state, the remainder of the Michigan territory became the Wisconsin territory. I'm so fed up with people saying that the UP is a part of Wisconsin when Wisconsin wasn't even a twinkle in anyone's eye when Michigan became a state.

Why do you think Because michigan took it from wisconsin just like michigan took that southern strip from ohio. You take what you want. And its called upper peninsula or u p. And outside of a beautiful quiet ride thru u p or to view lake superior its just a bumpy desolate wasteland better known as that hour drive from the big mac bridge to canada. u p threatened to join wisconsin in '70's because it felt disrespected being left off of mi. maps but was just u p bluster just like their winter winds which makes it more like an extention of minnesota.

Unfortunately the UP is not geographically or culturally Wisconsin. The mountains in the west act as a natural barrier. Yes I know the UP and LP dont touch by land. With a major border in THE SUE Michigan needs to manage that area because of geographic proximity. The economics and geopolitical nature of Michigan as a state require it to work like it does, and Ohio getting toledo was great for them too, yes its a complete shithole that I have spent some of the worst days of my life in, but it's good for their economy

Because they, Michigan, were going to stomp Ohio a new mud-hole and the Federal Government stepped in.
The Iron and Copper mines alone, in the U. P, have been worth more than Toledo, many, many, many, many times over.
Do you know why women in Ohio wear high heels. To keep their knuckles from dragging on the ground.
Wisconsin wasn't a state when the Upper Peninsula (UP) was given to Michigan. The UP was granted to Michigan in 1836 as part of a compromise resolving a border dispute with Ohio.

As a former Wisconsinite, it annoys me that part of Wisconsin was taken from us because my Older Brother States couldn't get along and were bickering about whose room boundaries were theirs. This part of the map is such an eyesore. And much of what would've been Wisconsin's access to the Great Lakes has been cut in half as a result. Even though Michigan already has so much coast line to begin with, they also have Wisconsin's northeastern and most of their northern coastlines.

And since then the state of Michigan has treated the U. P. As more like a colony and second class citizens. In the 1970’s we in the U. P. where Abel to get Congress to consider State Hood for the U. P. And in the final vote in congress we lost by 1 vote. And we where told when we have 500, 000 thousand citizens we can apply again since then every time we start grow the state tries to throw a wrench in to our economy.

Lived on the UP for much of my childhood. Lived on the Michigan/Wisconsin border and regularly travel between the two. The county I lived in was the only part of Michigan on Central time (like Wisconsin. From there I moved to the Michigan/Ohio border. About two miles south. Both the places I lived were in the disputed regions. My father was from Wisconsin and my mother from Michigan.

I wondered this in some sort of a deep corner of my brain. I lived in Michigan for many years of my life. I was born in Ohio, but considered myself a Detroiter. Thank you for all the research. I would have never guessed that the upper peninsula was a settlement over a dispute over Toledo. If you're from the area and you never heard that before that's bananas!

I think all the lakes that touch Michigan should be called Lake Michigan. Just saying we’re just making stuff up now so I declare it, so it shall be done. Lake Michigan of the North that borders Wisconsin, Mid Lake Michigan, Eastern Lake Michigan and Southeastern Lake Michigan by the Water route.

I have spent a lot of time in this area (I am from Texas )and the people do not refer to themselves as from Michigan, they will say I am from the UP. It is part of their identity, but the most important thing is they are all hands down, Packer and Brewer fans. It is a big FU to the down staters

Michigan lost the Toledo War on purpose and picked up the entire Upper Peninsula. They were playing 3D chess. Plus Toledo is basically part of Michigan anyways with the Mudhens (AAA Tigers) and the U of Toledo Rockets that have Maize and Blue Colors. Plus Jim Harbaugh was born in Toledo.

Meow-me river Speaking as someone from Fort Wayne it’s the Maw-me/Mommy River.
Also, the reason they want to control the Maumee There’s a portage near here that basically connects the Great Lakes to the Mississippi River by the way of the Wabash River to the Ohio River.

Imagine Michigan and Ohio as 5 year olds fighting over a hot wheels car. Dad says Ohio gets the hot wheels car. Michigan throws a tantrum, dad gets Michigan a RC car instead. But with the condition that Michigan has to share it sometimes with it’s little cousin Wisconsin.

None of this matters because Elon Musk is actually buying you at the moment. Taking control. Elon Musk flexes his big-money election muscle in bid to turn Wisconsin Supreme Court conservative. Musk’s involvement in Wisconsin court election is shattering spending records.

I’m running for Governor of Wisconsin. I’ll build a wall on the southern border and make Illinois pay for it. I will annex the Upper Peninsula and reunite our land as one big beautiful state. I will sign an executive order renaming Lake Michigan to Lake Wisconsin.

What an unfortunately placed add. I instantly turned it off and went to another video. Why destroy your body of work by putting in an ad in the middle of an excellent video that will out last the company paying for the advertisement. Put them at the end.

Upper Peninsula of Michigan Should be it's own state. Especially if DC ever becomes one to keep thr political balance of the US intact.
While Puerto Rico should be independent and American Samoa should be runified with The Republic of Samoa.
