18: 05 I’d argue that the French only really colonized the St. Lawrence Valley, Acadia, and the Mississippi Delta region. While they traded into the Louisiana territory and Canada beyond the Great Lakes, they never had effective political control over the territories or the Indigenous peoples living there. As such, their influence was certainly imperial, but to say they successfully colonized the North American interior ascribes to them more power and control than they ever actually had.

I don’t get it - what attracted the 100s of millions of white Europeans to migrate to all these American countries - given that (unlike the rich developed USA & Canada today) the continent would have been just empty lands newly discovered inhabited by indigenous tribes
Like people migrate today to USA & Canada given how clean, developed, rich & fun lifestyles these countries providebut what attracted them before this

We all talk about the British empire but we often sideline the Portuguese Spanish and French empires I mean they were as big and influential as the British empire at a time and had lots of influence I mean the Portuguese empire was at 10 million km2 the Spanish empire was 20 million km2 and the French empires the first (10 million km2) and the second (13. 5 million km2 for a total of 24 million km2

While you probably could have shown more confederacies (the Oceti Sakowin/Great Sioux Nation and the Three Affiliated Tribes of the Mandan, Hidatsa, and Arikara come to mind) in North America, I do appreciate the inclusion of the Blackfoot and Iron Confederacies in this video.

The legacy of the big 4 empires is 3 billion people speaking English, 600 million people speaking Spanish, between 300 and 500 million people speaking French and 300 million people speaking Portuguese really impressive! And also the spread of Catholicism

One of the most shameful protracted events in history: the utter devastation, through disease, mostly, and then through weapons, of whole ethnic groups and cultures in the name of kings and gods. Absolutely disgusting in retrospective.

Columbus though he had landed in India and discovered a new route. He was not a #flatearther by the way. He comes back to Spain and word spread. Then the entire Western Hemisphere was subjugated by Europe.

Colonization of America and Africa were preceded with wars of invasion and colonization within europe.
Europeans invented drawing boundaries and ignoring healthy boundaries of other populations

I as one of the descendents of the Acadian exiles for one I’m grateful to see Acadia represented on these maps! I just need to point out that it was people from Boston who kicked us out!

Always the white man.
Interesting why no one asks how the Arabs and Turks colonized the Levant
From Alexandria in the south
Constantinople in the north
And Babylon in the east

France carried out 11, 118 slave trade crossings, transporting 3. 2M Africans, 25% of the transatlantic slave trade. Only the UK, 27% (3. 4M) and Portugal, 46% (5. 8M) did more

Make the world great again, native persons need to take control of the territory again. Renew the culture and languages. Sadly some cultures like Aztecs, wiped out completely.

Great video. Very under talked about topic. All we ever hear in today's life is how bad we were. But while the Europeans were rough there's so much more to history
reply

Looking at how the Indigenous tribes conquered other tribes long before 1492, it's pretty clear that White people aren't the only ones capable of being Colonizers.

Over 50% of the world’s borders today were drawn as a result of British and French imperialism, it’s crazy how the Anglo-French rivalry shaped the whole world
reply

Kind of like today. People are rebelling getting rid illegals in america, they think will make their life better. Did the same thing to the native Americans.

Britain had by far the most colonies in history with 130, France was second with 80 colonies, followed by Portugal with 52 and Spain with 44 colonies

It happened when self identified Catholics, Prots and whatever cross religion used murder and lies. Proving their religion is just a word

Horrid Africans selling their fellows. Evil African slavers. Remember, Britain was not formed til 1707, so perhaps revisit the English period.
reply

Naming him king Philip was in itself of a huge disrespect and mockery, the Europeans were extremely savage in action. Ruthless
