That smart fruity chewy gum is your key to success. Researchers tested 224 undergraduates from St. Lawrence University, dividing them into three groups. One group chewed gum before and during the test, another chewed gum for five minutes before being tested, and a third didnt chew anything. The researchers then gave them a multitude of tests to determine their performance. The students who chewed gum before taking the tests did better for a short period of time than those who did not chew gum. Their improvement was strongest right after gum-chewing, before dropping to normal levels after an average of 20 minutes. Based on

We used to get kicked out of class for chewing gum.
The average pupils grade results were seemingly in decline, as at one point just a few yrs after I left, the school got noted as the worst in the country.
Hmm.
So hypothetically.
Could it be: -
- that chewing gum caused a lack of education resulting in poor grades.
- A schools lack of tolerance towards chewing gum created a failing systematic structure resulting in poor grades.
. or it could be that I'm just a dumb feck?

Another psychological way to do better on tests with gum is based on state-dependent memory/learning!
Chew gum (or even suck on mints) while studying. Then during the test, your mind will have a better chance of recalling the info if you have the same gum/mints because of the extra details that your brain is calling that was connected to the info you learned (the last of the gum/mint)

One of the benefits I remember learning is that while chewing, your brain is easier to trick out of anxiety: digestion is a parasympathetic function, while anxiety (and any related mental lapses) is due to a sympathetic response. It's one reason why chewing gum is good for people with anxiety, so long as you find one that's right for you.

But, like.
Everyone in my class smacks their gum during anything, and the sound of chewing SETS ME OFF. Nothing I can do about it.
I've gotten so irritated that I once scratched off a small piece of my ear. I just can't handle the sound. Guess I'll let everyone get better test grades than me haha

I think it's just a stress killer, so the student is more relaxed and thinks positivly.
And for behing more active during lesson, it's just boring to hear that teacher if you find yourself in the need to chew to keep your attention up: / It happens a lot with my phylosophy teacher for example.

i don't know if this theory already been proving but doesn't it only work when you're chewing gum while studying and revising will help you better in passing a test/exam if you chew the same type of gum because your brain will pick up the same memory it had when you chewed it last?
reply

I started doing this in my freshman year of college. If it weren't for minty gum I definitely would have fallen asleep several times and not had as much focus. After three years I'm really happy to hear that a study has actually been done on it!

Also, if you chew gum (it may have been mint) while studying and then chew the same type of gum during the test it's supposed to help you remember.
Edit: I wrote this while halfway through and I am excited they mentioned mint gum at the end XD

reply

I heard once that if you chew a new flavor of gum that you are not used to while you study, then when you chew that same flavor during the test it will help you remember a lot more of the stuff for it. or something like that XD

My teacher in school reasoned that gum would be put under desks and could be put in someones hair, and took my entire pack off me for sharing it. Im planning to email ten videos of the benefits of chewing gum to drown her two reasons.

Not only my school but possibly the principal needs to see this! I'm gonna show them! Oh wait it's too late and I'm homeschooled now. At least my parents let me chew gum. It actually makes all the difference.
reply

It's probably, because chewing is something you used to, so you inherently free up you mind and think more about chewing gum.
To go for a short walk prior to the test has probably the same effect.

The only reason teachers are mean Is because they are dumb, Real learning Isn't painful, But this is brainwashing, It's different. And the system Is Indeed broken. I've been saying to scrap it entirley.

224 undergrads is a great starting hypothesis, but isn't a big swath of people to use in order to get good analysis. Furthermore, the grammatical error is killing me (Gums Helps.

Anyone know where you can get gum that does not have sugar or artificial sweeteners in it? I'd rather not be consuming cancer causing chemicals nor tooth rotting sugar.
reply

I don't like gum because my body expects food from the taste and after a while of chewing I gag on it as my body's way of saying this is not nutritional, you don't need this
reply

My teachers always wanted to make me give up chewing gum during lessons. They failed! I chewed so much gum, that they gave up to stop me: D. I was successful (in two ways!
reply

Has anyone here chewed gum while studying or taking tests? Did it help you study better or pass exams? I would like to know other people's experiences with this.
reply

my psych professor thought this was ridiculous but I chewed gum during every exam and got an A. Placebo effect or not if it works for me I'm doing it.
reply

I have found that chewing gum while and before an exam, especially one requiring tons of memory, eases my stress and makes me perform better on said tests.
reply

I did that too. Once I got 38% on a test and re took a different one, same level and my score went up to 54%
I know Im dumb, but at least it helped

reply

What about the gastritis problems, and caries that chewing gum can produce? Is it more beneficial or actually harmfull for our health?
reply

I just want to point out its gum, NOT gums
Gums are part of your mouth. Gum is the chewable candy. -_-

reply

Oh dude my entire country doesn't support being smarter and actually succeed as a nation because gum is banned
reply

So how do you test this? I mean, not everyone is as smart as someone else. Some may even have studied more?
