Did you grow up in a household where you had a single parent? A single mom or a single dad? Although having two parents in the picture is definitely beneficial for kids growing up, its not always the case. There are many children today who are going through life with just a single parent, and when they reach adulthood, many of them become highly successful, happy individuals. Both negative and positive psychological effects of having a single parent have been studied extensively. In this video, we cover some of those positive and negative consequences. I'm from a single mother home, she was 15 when she had me, she also came from a single mom home, when my grandma found out about she kicked my mom out, ever since 14 my mom lived couch to couch at different friends house and then 16 she got emanciptated, my dad side of the family refused to have me in their life, it was really my mom and I. All of my mom siblings and family also shun her out and didn't want any part of us too. When I was 3, we ran into my dad at Mcd, my mom worked constantly, he wanted to help. He babysit me once in his plce, he had 3 other kids, they were toddlers and babies. His wife came home and saw me and was so angry, she gave him an ultimatum, me or them and he chose them. When I was 18 he called my mom to check if I was still alive, and then he never called back. I never would want anyone to go thru what i went thru, when i was 9 my mom had another baby, and my lil sis dad is a horrible provider but a good dad to her. he never considered me as his child n i was fine with that. the only that really hurts is now my mom constantly leaves to different cities for work, n my lil sis dad got married to a horrible women. Leaving me to be mom and dad to my lil sister. I love my sister but i will never have a child or a wife or a husband bc at the end of the day i got myself and thats all i ever wanted or needed. just wanted to share my life on here. I work at a hospital and i'm in college, I'm really proud of myself on how far Imade it in life. Whenever i feel depress or angry, i remember 3 yr old me, i take care myself like a mom and a dad, i look up to my future self n i'm just so happy to know who will always love and take care of me.

I first grew up with a single dad and lived with my grandparents and him. He was an amazing father and my grandma had been my mom. Still is. I will always consider more of a mom than my biological mom. My biological mother eventually decided to fight for me when my dad was struggling mentally after my grandfather passed. he had a lot mental health problems but he still was a good father. It was cruel of her to take advantage of that. But she got custody. Living with her was traumatic. She was and still is an alcoholic, sure, she also may have tried her best, but her best was screaming at us (my brother lived with her too) every day while drunk, because she was so stressed. she made us feel like we were the reason she had to drink which tore us down. it hit me harder than my brother. Although I know it was hard on him too. She was neglectful, shes leave us all alone night after night expecting me to be the head of household. And if I complained about how I couldnt do it, shed scream at me saying I need to help out more. It was just bad. I am now a single parent of two. Im 25 in my own home with my two kids trying my hardest. I struggle big time with stress. But, I am not an alcoholic at all. I dont drink at all. Im working, I love my kids with all of my heart day in and day out. They are happy and taken care of. My dad and grandma showed me what good parenting was, and my mom showed me what horrible parenting was. idk if Id be as dedicated to being the best parent I can be if it was for my experiences.

when my mom and dad split up, my mom and I moved to a different country so because of that I barely see my dad
everyday I see dads and their sons and then I wish I had a dad in my life
my mom doesnt want to date anyone so there is no way of me getting a step dad and honestly its just makes me feel sad cause thats the only thing that could possible be close to a father figure in my life
I have really bad anxiety, really low self esteem and no father figure to look up to teaching me how to be a man and it just makes me sad
im antisocial, im always quiet and I never tell anyone about my feelings I always just pretend that im doing fine
I have bad grades cause I have no motivation to do anything productive and it sucks
im on my computer playing games all the time cause it just makes me forget about my problems and makes me feel like a normal child for a while
the only person that came close to my father figure was my grandpa I really looked up to him and he was my best friend and we had such a good relationship but he passed away due to cancer like 2 years ago and since then everything just became worse
dont get me wrong I love my mom for everything she does for me but I just miss a dad in my life and me and me and my mom fight a lot so that doesnt make it any better
no one probably cares but it just felt good writing this down: /

The worst part of the whole ordeal is the dad showing up when the kid is in it's teens like nothing happened. Like come on the kid is 75% raised already, you aren't really needed anymore at this point. I mean the kid might want to know who it's dad is and ask some questions, but basically if the dad never showed up the kid would have been kind of fine. Some dad's want to show up earlier but their current wives would not allow it because the kid would destroy their happy family and their kids in a way, but they want the guy to be present in the lives of the kids they have together. Many guys want all the fun they can get without taking on the responsibility of raising their kids. If they marry any woman, they want to please her even if it means accepting the woman's children from previous marriages and/or engagements. Why can't they tell the woman that just as he has accepted her kids she should accept his kids, but they love the marriage to said woman above the lives of their own kids. Later when they're old, they want the their children from the single moms to accept and welcome them.

Having an absent parents is hard well my parents are divorced ever since I was born grow up without parents and living with my grandparents instead I became so insecure of everything and feel out of place in my family because I never experienced the love I got from my parents and now that also found out my father has a new perfect family living with a happy life it really broke me I get bit jealous ofc while my mother whose always away shes an overseas worker who rarely visits me I developed social anxiety and depression I have a lot of breakdown because I always feel sad and even my own family make fun on what I do they judge and criticize my every move this what happens when you grew up without the wounds cant be healed without the love of them sometimes I rarely show my emotions because I bottled them up since Im not really an emotional person its hard coping alone and hiding it thats why I just wanted to live alone to get away from toxicity

Just Venting.
For the past 5 years I've grown up in a single parent household with me my two younger sisters and my dad. We have had financial problems throughout it all and still do. I've felt like I have to be a mother to my sisters and I've taken up that. My dad whenever i tell them something like dont run to close to the road says Your not their mother you cant boss them around even though for most of my life I've had to be their mother figure. My mother wasn't the best for the last two years that i was with her, and i dont really like being compared to her or to talk about her my every single god damn day my dad mentions how I'm so much like my mother even though I've told him multiple times not to compare me to her. He thinks he knows everything that happened while i was with her but the truth is he doesn't know half of it and wont let me go get help for the things im dealing with, so these videos really help i find.

My childhood was chaotic, but I survived. I fell in love, joined the military, got married, and had a baby last year. Looking back on my life, I have many regrets. I feel like an empty person. I dont want to become like my bipolar mother or my absent father. I should be happy. This July I tried taking my life. Since I survived, Ive been doing research on single family homes and how growing up without a mother can affect a boy. My conclusion is, he will be okay without me. Its best if I leave now before I become a monster. I tried getting help, I dont feel better. My son is only a year old but I dont think I can stay any longer. My husband is so sweet and supportive but I feel sick in the head. I worry about my baby boy. I dont want him to get hurt or abused, but I dont think me sticking around will be enough. To whoever reads this, Im sorry, I just needed to vent. Im scared.

I came from a two parent household. Most of my peers, however, came from single parenting. Living in that type of environment was not easy, but everything was right in the world until my dad passed away. The added stress of having to figure out how to feed three children alone damaged my relationship with my mom. I followed in my parents footsteps and avoided many of the mistakes they made by having me too young and I'm turning out okay. I say Okay because I lacked the skills to be a good provider since my desire to succeed dwindled after my father died. I said all that to say this:
A slight decline isn't insignificant especially when children from single parent homes tend to copy their parents mistakes. That decline in many, many cases magnify as the generations progress. Just taking a look at black communities as a reference point can shed light on the effects over time.

I grew up with 2 parents at home in the most extremes of toxicity and I had one marriage and several long term relationships. I fled from when they started to feel like home I used to wish my parents divorced bc the house was more peaceful when one of them would be gone. I had to fight that bs conditioning of you have to fught to get through and stay together nd it never sat well with me. In my mind i knew if this is making me feel worse than being alone what is the benefit of getting to 80 saying we made it and having your face look like you survived a natural disaster or a war. what is romantic about that? I am raising kids in a peaceful single parent home and even though I see the negative side displayed here, I see them thriving if anything because their focus is school and friends and not tension in the house due to bad relationships. amen

I'm embarking on this journey. She got arrested for breaching her avo again. I came out and compiled an exhaustive list of the abuse. It spans 10 years. My son is 3. 5 and my parents are giving him a safe home until I get courts etc sorted out.
Last weekend I discovered she had committed a heinous crime against my son. He claimed she tried to stick his head in the toilet. Combined with her spitting in my face and smashing up my room, I knew I had to end it once and for all.
Now she is facing 3 criminal charges, 2 breaches of bail and she will have to answers to dozens of evidences of the physical and psychological abuse. And a fine arrived today so she is going to lose her licence. It's so messed up.

My parents arnt divorced. They are separated. They only where together for when I was a baby and then they slit. Keeping me with my mother through the week and my dad on the weekend. I'm used to it even past my mum's emotional abuse. I begged my dad every weekend not to take me back and he always did.
I always feel envious of kids who have both their parents. I always wanted to know how that feels and have that for my self. Being a daughter with just my father is hard. Its hard talking to him because he is so nosy and it always makes me wish I had my mother to help me like most daughters do in my area.

My mom is a wonderful woman, she loves me and I love her too but I feel guilty for one thing. That I still miss my father even tho he left me and my mom and marry another woman, he left when I was just three I can't even remember both of us spending time together but here I am still missing him. And the fact that it hurts so much cause I can forgive him but he will never acknowledge me to as one of his child since he already have children to his new wife. And I just really hope that I don't feel this way cause I already have an amazing mom but still wanting my useless father attention.

I didnt go through all the comments but I did notice in the beginning there was a lot of comments about divorce. My parents werent married just living together for a very short time, and I remember my dad leaving. Ive often been labeled about being an only child and that luck was what I had. Maybe Im looking to focus on the isolation I often felt bc my mom worked two jobs so I look nice. And how I had to learn how to take up for myself because there was no siblings. Im learning that there is no perfect story just imperfect people striving for perfect lives.

My mom was never married when she adopted me when I was a baby. She as worked full time nurse. I m very close to my grandma and grandpa coz a lot of the time they had too watch me. But my mom did get into a lot of fights when I was teenager and yell at eachother coz we are both hot headed. I started getting anxiety and depression as a teenager which anxiety still affects me today but I have better control of it. Also my mom and I relationship is a lot better know that Im my twenties.

It's kind hard listening to your friends say My parents and when they just ask me I'm like my dad- because my mom was never there and has her own life somewhere else. We don't talk at all. Most of my friends know about my mom, so they kinda steer away from family and parent things unless necessary. But new friends don't know and I tend to just let it by and not say anything because, I feel like I'm being rude and selfish. Anyone else feel the same?

My ex is a malignant narcissist. Me not understanding his strategies to fail me and our son together and win at all cost for our son to be with him and his new child of divorce bride to avoid paying child support and alimony is no different then pulling our sons head off! If a man is unwilling to support the mothers income disparity, a court should intervene. If a court allows the child to side with the wealthy parent, its discrimination and alienation.

After my mum and dad splitting up I still saw my dad and then suddenly 2 years ago he left I'm nearly 20 I haven't seen him since I was 18 and I don't know if I will again but I really miss him it's like the 18 years down the drain and he never lived with us when we were younger I remember feeling excited when I saw his car parked outside our house now that feeling's gone and I wish it hadn't I wish I was a little kid again sometimes

I hated my Mom for forcing us to see Dad every other weekend so I never understood why being in a single parent household would effect anyone when thats life and sometimes its for the best they divorced and unfortunately I still had to see my Dad.
Its the reason why my Sister joined the Air Force.
It really hurt hearing her say she was going to bring me with her.
Did she really meant it will always be in my mind.

As a child with a single parent, I've always wondered what it is like to have another person in that relationship. My mom has never gotten married before though. My dad just keeps moving to other states for jobs. I barely even know who he is since him and my mom separated when I was around 3. I remember I would cry if had to leave my dad because I barely saw him or even knew him in general

Person with a single father here
Ahem
I grew up with a single parent(my dad)
And i never met my mom
But i have always felt more happy with my father then thinking about her
My father said she left cause she had more priorities
And that i kinda wasn't one of them
But he always protected me from harm and bullies and made me strong
And i love him for that

All I can say is that I've always lived with only my mom as far as I remember, and no I didn't pass through hardship nor did I feel anything that are on the range of negative emotions, having a strong mom who could raise 3 children on her own with no set back for me and my brothers is an amazing thing, and I do see my dad from Time to time, maybe one every year or 2 years.

I'll be real, both my parents are crappy hypocritical adults. One belittles while the other neglects. Having lived with both of them one parent at a time as they split up, I cannot ever recall a happy memory with any of them. Although I suppose in some ways having lived with a parent who acts immature has taught me well on what kind of parent I should never be

My mum is a psychopath that likes to break our family up any chance she can get. My father was an amazing man that never ever said a bad word about her and made sure he was always there for me growing up and into adulthood. He was the glue that held us all together and mum is the acetone that keeps breaking us apart.

I am a single mother and raising my two children all by myself. I am doing my best yet. I always have doubts on how they feel deep inside their heart. Are they feeling incomplete? Are they having hidden anger deep in their heart? Will it effect their future life? All I want is their happiness. and success.

2: 40 that's gotta be a fallacy or some sort.
Chaotic two parents compared to stable one parent
That's not a matter of 2 parents vs one parent that's a chaotic environment vs a not chaotic environment.
That has nothing to do with he number of parents and to claim it does is well, lying.
