Just like you, the folks at Psych2Go love to unwind and relax by watching some nostalgic anime, reading our favorite Manga, or by listening to the latest hits by BTS (Wheres my Army at. But a few weeks ago, a possibility suddenly occurred to us What if these things actually helped with depression? Judging from our own experiences, it certainly seems that way. But we needed to confirm our suspicions, so we did a little digging. Heres what we discovered

Neon Genesis Evangelion nearly drove me to suicide.
Seeing Shinji suffering is like seeing myself suffer, because at one point in time I was almost exactly like him, especially back in 10th grade when I was bullied to the brink of suicide. I simply cannot tolerate watching Eva. I felt forced to relive my trauma upon viewing it. Im deathly afraid of it. Twice I had a nightmare where I saw myself as Shinji choking Asuka and starting the Third Impact. Ive been struggling with this newfound depression ever since.
I was obsessed with the series for over a year to try and outwit the isolation of the Coronavirus pandemic. It only increased the burden, and kept the memory of my friends recent suicide alive.
Watching the End of Evangelion was like peering into a broken mirror, and I was viewing the hell I wouldve put myself through had things turned out differently, had I decided to give up living. It still haunts me to this day.
Sometimes I hate myself because I fail to appreciate what so many have claimed to idolize, and I beat myself further for failing to worship what they call praiseworthy, I forced myself to watch a show that reminded me of nothing but pain just so I wouldnt be alone anymore, I was willing to sacrifice my individuality for some company amidst the isolation of the pandemic.
I sought emotional refuge in the Evangelion fandom on social media, hoping theyd understand me and provide me with answers that would grant me peace of mind. Instead, they downplayed my trauma, going so far as to spread a rumor of my past to shame me of my mental illness, spiraling me deeper into depression, which Ive been struggling with for over a year now.
I just want Shinji to be happy, so this past self of mine can be laid to rest once more. Im afraid to decouple myself from him after losing my friend to suicide, which Eva made me feel responsible for, especially when I saw Shinji kill Kaworu, of which I fail to understand how anyone can call it praiseworthy. Until then, I feel nothing else matters.
Theres a reason why I keep coming back to Evangelion; something that reminds me of nothing but pain.
I want to prove to myself Im not crazy for feeling this way, that Evangelion really did force me to relive my trauma, that my depression is not just a figment of my imagination or another anime plot point. I want to feel that my fear and resentment towards Eva is justified.
But the fact Im the only one I know in existence whos been traumatized by an anime makes me feel like I really am crazy.
But finally, with 3. 0+1. 0 released, I can rest easy knowing that Shinji has finally reached the light at the end of the tunnel. Evangelion is finished, and I want it to remain that way.
But if things hadnt turned out that way, I wouldnt be here today.
Whenever I think of Shinji I cannot help but feel suicidal.

At first kpop (BTS and TXT, anime, cartoons and kdramas were my escape from reality. But then, I had finished middle school and was about to start highschool and started reflecting on what i did, then depression actually hit me (im not saying its kpop and aime to blame, but that you shouldnt just mindlessly distract yourself. Now im using it from time to time to relax, i think a lot more deeply about the messages creators had but it also motivates me to love and work on myself and to improve my life. Its okay to not have everything figured out, im only 18, but i belive in bright future and im finding myself being happy in this moment

I started watching anime because I got bored of everything else really. Most movies I could predict large portions of the plot and storyline, and I got bored of stuff a lot of other shows because they just dragged on and on with each season feeling the same. Anime was like a wild card for me, and while I can predict the generic s anime now, I still get super excited when new things come out, and love seeing what is coming out every season.

And now Kpop has a deeper message like loving yourself. It connects us no matter language or distance, we communicate with people like us and we give the same love we receive. They care for us, and we care for them, even when our families or friends don't, their music can heal our wounds, and there is nothing purer than that.
So, yes, I'm proud to be into Kpop.

I can confirm this, when i watched Naruto for the first time and i saw the story, personality, final battle and death of Choji Akimichi, it really helped me with my insecurities, now i love myself more, and understand why friends are so important.
(and after the his battle vs jirobo, he became my favorite anime character)

Could be wrong but the symbols posted at 5: 19, the one in the lower left corner reminded me of how much I love MLP: FiM and how happy I was to always get up on Saturdays and watch it when I was feeling down. Thanks for making an old guy feel like not such a geek and knowing that stuff that entertained me was helping me.

orange es un anime que me dolio mucho y ahora estoy leyendo el manga
lo que mas me mata (ademas de saber lo que esta pasando porque ya vi la historia antes) es saber que gran parte de la historia es relatable en mi caso

I use alot of anime characters in my thumbnails. I won't say that it helped me with my depression, but it has taught me countless life lessons, and I feel as though id be worse off without it's influence in my life.

And then you finish the anime you were attached to, and the characters you watched growing emotionally and eventually even phisically are. gone.
Yes, that is called Post Anime Depression Symptom (PADS.

Doesn't help me. Watching anime just reminds me of friends and romantic partners I don't have and never had, while fictional characters are portrait to be happy having it all, while I have none of it.

While watching an anime, depression went on a vacation, but finishing an anime, especially a good one lets depression punch you in the mental and emotional guts and beats you up
