Hi.
So, I've been struggling with a bunch of different mental issues these last couple of years and I really want to get better but I'm still not sure if it's unresolved trauma that's been nagging me all this time, or if it's something else.
When I was little (about 7 years old, I experienced something that I think stuck with me.
I know this is a bit long but please read it. I think it would help me a lot to hear other people's thoughts.
One day, me and my younger sister were going to my grandma's house for the weekend. It would be just the three of us, and I was so excited. I've always been pretty close to my grandma. I loved her so much and always enjoyed spending time with her. During the evening we had a really good time. I woke up a bit early the next morning and was ready for breakfast. I went into my grandma's room but she wasn't there. As I passed the bathroom door I noticed light shining through the little crack in the door. I realised she must be in there. I went back to my room and waited for a little while. My sister (who was only 6 at the time) was awake by now. After waiting for about 15 minutes I stood up and walked over to the bathroom door. I knocked slightly, asking when we were gonna eat breakfast. I waited a bit in silence. No answer. I knocked again. Still silence. I then proceeded to slide the door open a bit.
Then. I noticed that she was laying on the floor. Motionless. The first thing that popped into my mind was that she must've fallen asleep or maybe taken a bunch of sleeping meds by accident. I went back to my room to go get my sister. We both stood in the door way with confused looks on our faces. I walked a little closer to my grandma and tried gently shaking her shoulder. She was just asleep. Right?
As I was trying to wake her up, I noticed that her eyes were like slightly open. Then it hit me. Like a cold bucket of water right in my face. She was dead. As I started to whimper, my sister burst out in tears. Panic flooded my mind. I backed away from the bathroom as everything around me started to crumble. With tears in my eyes I tried to remember what to do in these situations. Help. We needed help. I told my sister to pack her bag. We got dressed and gathered most of our stuff. We walked towards the front door and tried the door handle. It was locked. In a split second my mind was filled with dread. All sorts of thoughts were screaming up in my mind. The fact that we might be stuck there with a dead person until someone came was the loudest one. As I was starting to feel dizzy my little sister got the door open. I was so relieved and walked towards the open door. Passing the bathroom on my way, I choked up, and quietly closed the door. As we walked onto the street tears were running down our faces. The open alley was almost completely empty. It was early after all. After looking around for a bit, we spotted a woman on the other side of the street. We walked over to her and asked if she could help us. She was on her way to work and we came with her into a small building. We were placed in a room where we got some breakfast and watched a movie. They asked for our names and eventually called our parents.
After the incident I was always afraid to leave my parents. Even when we were supposed to go on a camp with the school I refused. Most of the adults didn't understand why I didn't want to go. I was scared. I was so scared that my parents would die and leave me if I left for that trip. My grandma (on my mom's side in this case) was also very dear to me. But after what happened that day when I was 7, I was always paranoid when spending time with her. I was practically waiting for her to lie dead right in front of me. Like what happened before.
I'm 16 years old now and the fear of leaving my parents is no longer there. But the paranoia of my grandma dying in front of me is still there. Along with the paranoia is a lot of other issues like fear of intimacy, dark thoughts and a constant need to push people away.
Could the incident mentioned above have made a destructive impact on me? Or am I just overreacting over regular teenage stuff?

So my 5th grade math teacher emotionally abused me and gave me chronic trauma. wonderful. I already knew that it was a bad occurrence, but I'm just now coming to terms with the fact that she emotionally damaged me to the point of completely changing my personality and demeanor. In total she:
-Made me a perfectionist (or enhanced perfectionistic tendencies that were already present)
-Made me fear math classes and my math teachers (no matter HOW nice they are)
-Gave me/Enhanced my anxiety, later being diagnosed with generalized anxiety disorder
-Made me fear rejection and failure
-Gave me seriously low self-esteem and confidence in my abilities
-Made me fear vulnerability with people (for context, I'd leave her room crying and almost immediately be surrounded by people who cared but made the space suffocating. While this isn't directly something she did, it was an indirect effect of what she did)
For YEARS, I never knew why I was this way. I just figured that everything was somehow my fault. At the end of the day, I'm just glad that I know where this sudden shift came from, and that I can now move forward and begin to actually undo the fear and self doubt she instilled in me.

my parents were emotionally and physically abusive when I was a child, usually to my elder sister but they were also aggressive to me aswell. They act all sweet most of the time which makes it even worse. When I was 3-8 years old I hid under the dining table when my sister was screaming because of my parents. They were awful. I decided to write this just now because I just experienced something very overwhelming. My elder sister invited her friends to her house and theyre running and screaming outside my room (playfully) and I cried a bit. I still remember every detail of my sisters screaming and yelling to apologize to my parents that shell never do it again. When they did it to me instead of screaming I just didnt like screaming or loud noises so I just stayed quit and cried while they yelled at me and hit me.

Hit the jackpot.
I have a question though. I have just been there for my kid going through things I went through (I'm not saying as it will be an obvious trigger to many but many aspects surrounding it were acutely similar. It's been a long long 18mths and them leaving hospital has allowed me to let go enough to feel the (re)trauma I'm experiencing. I previously unpacked, worked through and moved on from it but some of my experience was pertinent to my kid's situation so I've had to rake it up repeatedly over this 18mths, it's essentially all I've been allowed to think about due to meetings and incidents etc. is this a different type of trauma/retrauma? And how do you deal with that and STILL be emotionally available for your kid?

About two or three years ago ( god it feels like it should be more recent) my best friend threatened to murder me and held a knife to my throat, ever since it has effected me. While I no longer experience nightmares I still do experience distress about the topic or things that remind me of it. Some (therapists and actually nice friends) suggest I was emotionally abused when describing other events, though I am still unsure. I dont know if what happened counts as trauma, and Id like to know. Categorization makes me feel better.

Idk what kind of trauma I have. My father died and a lot of the memories that I had of him and I kinda are fading sort of. I also had trauma from knives because I accidentally stabbed myself and had to get stitches. I was scared from knives for a long time and I sort of am still. Also yelling and loud noises in general because Im hypersensitive to noise and I hate yelling to the point where I have a panic attack and once I was in a loud restaurant and my mind went black and I was panicked inside. So idk

When I was like 8 or 9 my puppy died in front of me from car accident. I literally saw her suffering and me screaming and the public gathered. I always see that van in my nightmares. And today it wasn't much big of deal but my new pup just stuck out his hand and bit of body near gate and boom I was really terrified of even the slightest harm in that pup. I cried after that in a sort of relief I can really explain.

My trauma lasted for 22 years. I had problems at school. Although I was willing to help other students with class notes and projects, it eventually got to the point where they started to abuse my kindness, and use my good nature against me. They suddenly wanted to copy off my work and make me buy things for them. It got to the point where I started to resent them and walk on eggshells around them.

Four years ago today, somebodys lies nearly ruined my life. I thought not only was I going to lose my job, but that I was going to go to jail for a crime that I was completely innocent of. I dont have flashbacks or nightmares about it. However, I remember every event of that day as if it just happened today. What category of trauma does this fit under?

When I was younger, a lot of traumatizing events occurred pretty often, and even though none of it still happens now, I cant help but be constantly reminded of it. And not only that, but I do deal with bullying. But is it weird that whenever Im being bullied, I dont really care because Im so used to it? (I am so sorry to anyone who can relate)

Alright I seem to have most of these. Only diagnosis I've got in my life is that I have emotional trauma. I already knew that though but I guess hearing it from a psychiatrist made me truly know it. I was to go for therapy but it's too expensive.

Ive always been yelled at by my mom and dad. I try to distance myself from them at times.
The results from being yelled at are scared to ask for stuff, distancing myself, scared to fail, and I sometimes feel like Ill burst into tears.

I never thought of bullying as a kind of trauma. I always thought that everyone goes through it at least once in their life so it can't be that bad. I thought I was overreacting and being a crybaby about it. Thank you for this video.

2: 00 Idk if this would be violence but about 6 years ago my sister attempted suicide and I was only 8 and I watched it happen and I think about that day almost every single day and idk if that would be considered trauma?
reply

Its not said enough but trauma can also be cause from things other than physical like being yelled at constantly by a parent and being bullied and im so happy that its discussed here because its often not

I've been so traumatised at this point, that a 2 year devastating pandemic seemed much more easier on my mental health because it put a stop to the world and let me burrow into my cage of misery in quiet.
