Everyone faces different challenges when growing up. While some children can flourish and become well-adjusted adults, others may not be so blessed with ideal conditions. And while you love them for the most part, a big attribute to this disfunction is how your parents raised you. So here are some common parenting mistakes that negatively affect their childrens growth

Now that I look back and analyze things well, most of these can be applied to my parents. My mom used to be such a perfectionist when it comes to my grades and any kind of failure resulted in a temper tantrum from her. The first time I got a B on a test I panicked and with good reason, the entire neighborhood found out I got a horrible grade from hearing my mom yelling at me. She eventually learned to process I was also human capable of flunking tests but by then, I was already in college. She also used to complain non stop about me and remark my negative aspects in front of other people, mostly the ones I admired the most, saying that humiliation would make me learn. And it's not like I was such a troublemaker either, I was super low profile, which leads me to my dad. He always compared me to other more popular teenagers, saying they're more popular than you, why can't you be like them? Why won't you have a girlfriend? Why can't you be normal like other high schoolers? If you're gonna play videogames why won't you at least play the ones other kids play the most? He also lashed out at me whenever I wasn't able to answer a call or was busy doing something else or even when I had different hobbies than the rest. He wanted me to get into soccer cause other kids were into soccer, for example. In the end. guess they had a lot of issues that kinda affected my self-esteem and confidence for a while, and still do now a little.

Almost every night I was the last one at the table trying to eat my vegetables and wretching them back onto the plate. I just couldn't stomach them. I wanted my vegetables raw but mum wouldn't let me. I was constantly compared to my older brother and sister. (The golden boy and the golden girl. There were photos of everyone on the mantle piece except me. The first photo my parents took of me, I was about 6-7 years old. But it was kept in the photo draw. I don't even know what I looked like as a baby. These might sound like minor things but they have a major impact on your life. But right until their dying days, there was photos of my brother and his wife, my sister and her husband and children, photos of my children but still no photos of me on the mantle and cabinets. I don't know why I was singled out. It makes me sad that I was so neglected, but my siblings couldn't put a foot wrong. Even when my sister got pregnant at 16 years old my mother said to me Only the good girls get caught. Whatever that means IDK.

I used to eat cereal every morning and when it got soggy I simply would. not. eat. it.
It was disgusting and the texture was awful. Guess what my parents (prompted by my grandmother, I think) did?
They put the soggy cereal in the fridge and gave it to me for lunch. And then for dinner.
Instead of throwing it away and letting it go, they forced me to eat the nasty mush that was once fruit loops for every meal until it was gone.
I still will not eat fruit loops to this day. I can still taste it if I think about it and it makes my stomach churn.
My grandma also made absolutely disgusting (everyone but her agreed it was awful and she was pretty mean so I don't feel bad anyway) goulash for dinner way too often and I was forced to eat that too: (

7: 10 if i got an ok/bad grade, my mom would ask me what the best grade was, and if i tell her that it was mine she would praise me for trying harder than other students, if i said a guy/girl with a grade a little better than mine she would praise me for having one of the grades, and if it's a much better grade i would be really disapointed and sad but she would come over to me and ask me did you try your hardest? i would say yes and she would say it's ok honey you tried your best and that's what matters of course we would study the subject i got a bad grade in and try to learn where i was wrong, but my mom isn't the strict type, but she still compare's me to others wich i talk to her about it and she would apologize and wouldn't do so for another month

My mother specifically said to me
I dont care abt ur feeling get good grades and eat the food i make u
I could be much worse towards u so dont argue with me
(My name) stop being like this and be like ur sister, (her name)
Im in therapy without my mother knowing cuz when she did know she took me out of it and my father realized this so now I go there without her knowing
I relate to most of these, and my mother has been calling me a disobedient child since i was 6
Im in basketball, art lessons, band, soccer, and im forced to make food for the family every tuesday and that isnt bad but im the obly child who has to cook
Im the second oldest and my older sister is basically my mother compared to how im treated by my mother

When I was younger, if I ever got a low grade that was the hardest I could do, my parents would yell at me, punish me, and sometimes even hit my hand. This lead me to trying to get perfect grades for my parents but because of my bad mental health and my disorder I could barely focus and only got worse
This made me feel more stressed and depressed especially with the problems I had.
Because this video nearly made me cry, I might show this to my mom because she was the one who was causing all this but Im glad that my dad at least helped and supported me during times when I would get bad grades.
Thanks Psych2Go team!

With the last point, I agree and went through some degree of this, but there wasn't really another way that my parents to praise me, I rarely studied because I don't know how I'm supposed to, but I still almost always got good grades, because I had to reteach myself things with small amounts of clues multiple times before a test while doing homework, and even directly after the initial lesson, but my mom didn't know about the reteaching that went on, she only knew that I didn't study, so she assumed that I was just really smart.

My parents were good parents but they themselves had ether bad childhoods or mental issues but they always tried to keep it together with me and my siblings and I can think of things they could have worked on the last on got me because I once told them during a free period in school I was taught myself some polish they just talk about learning a more practical language since it was highly unlikely that I would really go to Poland instead of praising my attempt like my teachers did.

That avoided food for me was cereal. The adults would pour the cereal and milk for me, giving me no say in the amount. Of course I couldnt eat it all before it went soggy- so I was forced to stand in the corner, sit at the table all day, stared down, etc.
Only the good grades were praised here and lower ones were met with harsh criticism (Cs. I fell flat on my face in college. Grudgingly finished but now have a degree thats of no use, but hate school.

I just finisthed my studies in law school and my parents say that i should do something else because i can't be a lawyer but my other three siblings can. And whats hurts the most is that when i asked them if they believe in me they just looked at each other and did not reply. Also, a doctor of mine though a test said that i am a genius and my mother laughed loudly and said that nobody is a genius. Although she admires people with high iq all the time

I can relate to the praising intellegence part. I was scolded for getting an 89% instead of an A. That stressed me out the next year and I got only A's and made me have multiple sleepless nights in a row. They still have the problem of telling me, You are smart enough to get straight A's to me and my sister. I want to tell them what is going on but I'm pretty freaked out bout it. Time for another stressful year at school. YAAAAAAAAAY.

I was crying mid video because I realised that my mother does tend to do these a lot. She is a loving mother but majority of the times she makes me feel down or upset. I know it is because she's stressed at me that im very forgetful. I tend to not a appetite in eating but I'm forced to finish my food nonetheless. My cousin did mention that my mom could possibly be a tiger and a helicopter mom and it makes me worried.

my mother (only parent i have cause dad died before i was born) every day compared me to my brothers or someone else saying i was stressful or that she was to tired to take care of me while my brothers (two sis one 11 years of difference and the other one 8 and my brother with 9 year difference) they suffered my dads death and all but because of this i got the short end of the stick

Number 2 has happened to me too many times to count. My mum always asks one question then she demands me to say yes. Everytime this happened it felt really unfair and I feel like I need to say yes everytime I talk to my mum now. She doesn't even give me time to talk. She just straight up demands me to say yes right after she asks the question.

My dad says I wish you were my kid instead of my child for my brother he'll say it to his face and to me he'll say it behind my back the only way I know is because my friend aka the one my dad wants to be his child instead of me told me And the worst thing is he said that the first time he was there and he hadn't ever talked to him

The comparing one is always happening to me. It hurts when my mom compares me with my brother. Like just because he has high grades than me. I work hard even though I'm tired. It's very tiring and exhausted. But I always try to be like him. It's hurting my feelings and it's making my body weaker and weaker.

I have never been forced to eat vegetables, but my mother and father has forced food down my throat even as a teenager because I didn't like it and wouldn't eat it. I don't eat a lot, I have a very small appetite, so I'm not as hungry as my siblings and I'm often forced to eat causing me to throw up.
reply

I've noticed a lot of these in not me and my parents, but my step-brother and his grandmother. Especially things like signing him up for WAY too many activities, and not allowing him to say no to her due to causing enough stress that he prioritizes how she feels about him rather than how he feels.

funny (not funny) story about the fourth one:
i am severely lactose intolerant to the point of genuine sickness and throwing up. my mother (when i was 8-10) FORCED me to drink milk (ignoring my stomachaches and throwing up after) because she wanted me to grow strong.
thanks mom. /s

The most hurtful moment is when they don't have time for you leave u alone in home and they will go for work
If we say something and they just shout and say what is the problem with you it hurts the most
Why did I give birth to the child like u it also hurts

I think my parents are good people and I always felt like there was nothing wrong with them to make me turn out unsure and anxious as I am, now I understand why I feel like they were wrong somehow, because they have all this traits and I can relate to most of them
reply

I relate to all of these I'm 19 now and didn't even allow me to choose a course of my preference to study they still compare me to my elder sister and cousin but can't fight back when they pull the 'i'm your parent i work hard for your happiness ' i feel pathetic

For mothers day my school gave us an interview for our moms. One question was What is the hardest thing about being a parent
She said Dinding the balance between letting your kids make mistakes/letting them express themselves and being a parent.

reply

Why cant parents inspire by being supportive with words of encouragement along with addressing the problem and positive ways to improve.
Instruction is taken better with a positive attitude. A spoon full of sugar helps the medicine go down.
