5 Things You Don't Know About Autism (Part 2 of 2)
video description
> hard times connecting with people, to be social and friendly (our commun girlfriend discribed him as socialy clumsy.
> isolated, doing the minimum to appear friendly, but ending up exhausted, and having to go in his room after that.
> difficulties to care for people in general, yet able to do it with a very small circle of people, apparently.
> no interests in knowing others, needing a lot of time alone, almost locking up doors of his room for half a day.
> very small centers of interest, not happy to talk about it, or to share with others who had the same passion.
> often sad or in dark mood, with mood swings, but which were masks to appear OK and cool in front of others.
> need to appear good and cool, to show strengh and asstertivness in front of others, but very shy and insecure about everything, worrying a lot and being anxious all the time.
> difficulties to handle conversations, unable to keep the flow of a dialog, to understand the point of others, to participate or to give his own point, prefering to listen, or remain 100% silent or not giving a fck.
> difficulties to talk in a soft or polite tone, always upset or desagreable, maybe because of a lack of social interaction.
> not talking much about himself, even when asked, or when everyone had already tell something.
> lying at lot, yet I think it was to protect his private life, or just by fear of being judged, or appearing dumb or uninteresting.
> no real opinions, nor visible signs of culture or education, had no opinions on anything, prefering to nod at what others said.
> uncomfortable when confronted in a debate, or having to defend or prove his opinion, prefer the silent treatment.
> difficulties understanding jokes, or to make one, was able to laugh, but at situations, not at the jokes, or making others upset.
I had the opportunity to talk with the girlfriend a few months after that, and she gave me no clear answer, maybe because she, herself, was in the mist. She supposed he was some gifted/high potential guy, assuring me he was, indeed, really intelligent and having strong opinions. I supposed more of a mixed ADHD with maybe some Autism traits.

Ive got Aspergers, I tend to explain the whole Aspergers got broken up and my psychiatrist said if it hadnt been broken up Id be diagnosed with it but Im not quite on the spectrum but also if one thing does pop out that just gets worse over time or more noticeable then Ill be diagnosed with it but for simplicitys sake, I wont go into details.
A main one of the misconceptions Ive seen about Autism (and Aspergers) is that if youre autistic youre in the Special Education course. As a person taking the advanced course, no. I also know fully diagnosed autistic people who are in the same classes.
The worst case of this I saw was in a Special Education teacher. Thats kinda sad, but she didnt believe me at first when I told her. Weve clashed ever since because she wants me to be like everyone else.
Not everyone is a rocket scientist if theyve got Autism, Aspergers, or any relative. Actually, most people arent, which is why I always tell people when theyre like, Oh, you gets As! Awesome! And Youre so smart! that no. Im not, I just like patterns, Im used to complying to how to work with people in certain ways so now I know exactly what to do to make teachers happy. If I have to overthink how I talk, then Im definitely overthinking that essay. Im good at math not because Im Smart but because Im a patterned person.
Its one of those, if Im so smart why cant I hold a conversation with someone without getting a headache and screwing it up somehow?
Anywho, the summary is: Were not geniuses, but were not all in Special Ed. If someone is perceived as smarter and theyre autistic, ask if they like to be complimented about it. Ill say, I would love it if people asked, because hearing Youre so smart is the worst thing in the world to me

It's quite funny about the empathy bit, I'm very, VERY empathic to people and my surroundings. So much so that I tend to reflect how the environment feels. Also man, I feel that internalizing their autistic children will be children eternally deeply. My mother was extremely nervous about me learning to drive (I finally started at 27) and when I finally got my license she lightened up. She would say things up and down like I'm afraid you're going to get into a car accident, you're going to get road rage because of how you react with me driving etc.
My mother was also VERY nervous that I was moving out on my own this year with anxieties about being raped, kidnapped, followed, my place broken into, not being able to help myself, etc. I got my drivers license last November and while yes, driving was scary at first (no thanks to my mother lol) I found that I took to it very quickly. I also have moved into my own apartment back in March and I'm loving it! I'm doing exactly what I did when living with her just more independent now. I labeled moving out as giving myself time to grow as an adult which is so true. Now that my mother has finally seen me as an independent adult who can take care of herself, I can feel that she respects myself more in a proud sense vs before I drove and moved out. It took a while but honestly, it's better late than never, right? Everyone will feel ready to move out on their own time (if any at all.
Though I've had to spend some money on sprucing up my car I purchased last year, it's been all worth it in my opinion. I love experiencing life and I think I'd rather struggle a bit than live my entire life living in a dark hole and never stepping foot out of my comfort zone.

Autism is such a misunderstood developmental disorder but in truth it is so common and almost every autistic individual has a different experience, it is extremely hard to harvest a fixed amount of data to properly educate the unknowing general public about the truths and myths of autism. Leading to a lot of argument and false misconceptions about those on the spectrum. I appreciate those who help spread awareness that Autism is never a developmental disorder, nor is it something to be ashamed of. And as more researchers take their time exploring and debunking many things about autism as time passes, its only a matter of time before new facts and truths will be spread and taught in hopes to re-educate those who were blissfully ignorant about Autism. And if you happened to have autism, dont worry, you are not alone, never ever let anything make you feel left out or saddened because of your condition. It was never a problem in a grand scheme of things, you are amazing as you are. Thank you Psych2Go for spreading a new perspective. Have a nice day to those who may stumble across this!

I get so angry about the empathy part. Autistic people do not have lower cognitive empathy. Please consider the idea that you have to understand a person you actually cannot understand at all. This goes both ways. If neurotypical brains were the exception they would be considered less empathical. WHY? Because their brain simply could not comprehend certain aspacts for the Autistic brain. Autistic brains are not less empatical then neurotypical brains. Autistic brains just have to work overtime to understand neurotypical brains. Neurotypical brains are as much less empathical towards autistic brains (when compared with other neurotypical brains) as the other way around. Simply because it requires a much higher level of understanding.
A men will always seem more empathical towards another man, because he probably understands his situation. While a women will do the same with another women. It is just easier.

My friend asked if she is autistic will I be her friend, I said yes since I heard that they are smart. not knowing that I have one she have adhd.
So 2 people a person with adhd and a person with autism are friends.
But I thought that I just have anxiety and depression when I first saw her,
Since I was in elementary I was also named the friendless child and they thought that I don't want friends since I can play with my self and I always alone. but in reality I never knew that I was all alone since i have my sister. She also thinks that I don't care much about her, because everytime she get hurt I just stand there. My parents never think of me as responsible for taking care for children because I just follow them. I always thought motivation won't stop if I just continue but when I did stop and continue I just can't continue. ans there are many times too where I act autistic

I am just now realizing my symptoms of autism and adhd, and I am always afraid after an incident I had in 5th grade, I found it hard to try to talk with others due to fear, and I was not able to recognize a toxic person and bullying that I was going though, kids would tease me and I though they had good intentions because I could not recognize that they where being malicious to me. It took me until 6th grade to finally see that I was being bullied. Ghats my biggest story. I face other autistic traits like eye contact avoidance, mimicry to appear normal, noise sensitivity, childish reactions like tantrums, and obsessions, but I never had communication issues(that I know of. And I am only 13, and now have a therapist, but I am scared to tell anyone about this, as I fear I will be misunderstood or it will be waved off.

As an autistic person, I actually used to feel no empathy at all. When I did something wrong, I didn't learn from my mistakes and I didn't feel sorry for them. When somebody died that I knew like a family pet or a relative like your grandma, I did not shed a single tear. Not even one.
But sometimes, the biggest consequences for your actions shape your entire future.
I get why the empathy thing is a myth now. For people without autism, this is from an autistic person's perspective. I am proud to say that I am an empath.
Don't believe me? I predicted one of the biggest deaths in human history. One hour before Queen Elizabeth II passed.
I don't know how I did it but my life changed at that moment, and it was extraordinary.

There are two people that come to my mind, me, and my brother.
I am really high functioning, and people often don't realize I am autistic, but my brother is severely autistic, and speaks mostly thru Echolalia (he is also surprisingly socially aware, and intelligent, often manipulating people who think he is helpless so he can get what he wants)
Though yes, he tends to be maniplutive, he does have a kind heart, my favorite story about my brother is when my mom first found out he had autism, and was stressed and worried about it, wondering if he loved her back, he could tell something was wrong and started patting her back (probably because she had done that to help him feel better in the past like with burping)

I have always wanted to get married and have a family ever since I was little but because of a mixture of numbers 3 and 4 it's been very very difficult and I've never had a relationship before. I honestly don't know how to get one. Just like in the video, people see me sad and lonely and assume I want to be alone when in reality I want nothing more than to be included. But at the same time I also DO need my alone time sometimes. It's confusing I know but that's just the way I am. Socializing is exhausting and i need a break. It's hard enough to do it at all but trying as hard as I have been has taken a real toll on me. And I'm still not getting the results I want despite all my efforts. It makes me very sad.

As an autistic person, this spoke to me. Especially the intimacy point, I'm not against the idea but I also don't want to get hurt. It's complicated you know? Growing up I made a few friends and honestly I found out over the years that's the friendships that really stick and be with you through all stages of life. Those are the most meaningful friendships that I've had in my life, and although I have lost a couple of friends along my journey. friendships and relationships that I do have are meaningful and fulfilling.

As an autistic person I've always dealt with difficulty expressing non flat emotions. I've always had a face that people just naturally assume I'm angry or don't want anyone to get near me but the truth is, it is nearly impossible to smile when asked and expressing any sort of anger or sadness is just an alien concept, my best friends are the ones i made in my early teens, after that it became extremely difficult for me to maintain relationships with anyone or even start a conversation

while people do struggle with anxiety, depression, and other social impairments. the autism spectrum theory of these disorders is really no better than the gender spectrum theory as in its overly broad and where anything can mean anything and no way to adequately distinguish between schizoid and autistic traits. modern psychology is such a joke given its acceptance of dogma and group-think over any genuine empirical study tha could actually lead to help better mitigate these issues.

Because I don't show my emotions I've learned how to get around this by saying what I'm thinking out loud. I learned that people don't know what I'm thinking and I need to tell them what I'm thinking. Seems like common knowledge but somehow it just didn't click with me that people can't read my mind and it took me years to figure out that I need to say what's on my mind so people understand me. It has greatly improved my socialization.

i think the biggest misconception of autistic people is that were dumb or have lower iq than most. we just process information differently. some people with autism may have other disorders going on but most people who are autistic arent that way. but most people who aren't autistic seem to think everyone who has autism is obviously autistic and a huge charity case and infantize us as adult children. and it is not ok.

I always knew that autism was also in adulthood, and you guys just explained one of the reasons I feel so bad for autistic people. I can't imagine how hard it is for those people, and I want to provide support, but not knowing much of what they're going through is making it hard for me to correct people on the subject of autism.
I hope one day I'll be able to help those with autism.

I have a huge sensory issues and a lot of annoying special interests but i have a healthy relationship with my fiance. Autistic people are not dumb or weird, we are different and unique but still people, the world is just not prepared to learn. :3

What bothers me about my old school and the way they handle Autism as an autistic, is that they teach kids to be overly kind to autistics. Even before I was diagnosed, they treated them like they were 6-year-olds in 4th and 5th grade. No! Treat autistics the way you treat everyone. Dont be any nicer to them than neurotypical people. Treat us the same.

About empathy. I think I can feel empathy (I say in such a way because I don't know how other people feel it, but I can't show it in natural way. By this reason when I want to support someone in grief I try to write a warm letter for this person and sent it by post or by myself put it in postal box. Thank you, Violet Evergarden, for this idea.

The wanting friends part is so reliable I won't friends. But It is so exhausting to socialize. For long Spans of time That I have halfway brainwashed myself into thinking I'm an introvert I just say I'm an introvert Because it's so much easier than Trying to explain that I want friendship but i dont want constant social interaction

I literally need a diagnosis bc I need accommodations, but by the time I can get an appointment Ill be 18 and I wont be eligible. And there are no systems in place to diagnose adults. Which means no disability income for me.
Wish me luck on not immediately becoming homeless ig: /
