5 Signs You Had A Traumatic Childhood (And Don't Realize It)

There are many types of childhood trauma that can range from events like physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, physical neglect, emotional neglect, divorce, substance abuse, or a mental illness. Difficulties like trusting others, low self-esteem, fears of being judged, constant nightmares, or self-destructive behaviours can be hidden signs that someone may have experienced trauma of some sort. Adults can develop symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder even if they have no explicit memory of an early childhood trauma, according to research by UCLA psychologists. Although you may recognize some of these signs in yourself or someone you know, it is BEST not to diagnose yourself. Please reach out to a professional if you want to get treatment of some sort. Psych2Go is on a mission to raise awareness of mental health and destigmatize mental health issues

I always overlooked many of the traumatic things in my childhood, I have had many near death experiences and have always been told to shrug it off. I was almost run over by a train at one point and instead of being comforted because, I was in shock by almost being hit at 100 MPH, I was scolded and yelled at. A week later I had just decided to shrug it off. One of these near death experiences were caused by pure neglect. I was concerned about going skiing on a double diamond mountain because I had only been skiing for TWO 50 minute lessons before hand and when we got to the top my parents just said, relax itll be fine grow up there was also a blizzard on that mountain which made it hard to see. I went down the mountain faster than I imagined and I hit a rock and flew through the air, lost my skiing shoes and landed in the snow, I could feel myself getting frostbite very slowly as I lay there my heart rate slowing and I thought I would die. Luckily one of the adults that were friends with my parents was hanging back a bit and they found me and helped me down the rest of the way. When I got down my mother looked at me with scorn and said, you shouldnt have fallen down be more careful. There are many traumatic things we overlook in life. Thank you psych to go for helping every

When I was younger, I would constantly face harsh criticisms from my parents. Now, they've changed and are constantly caring and being kind to me and my older sister. Even if they're nice and responsible now, I still curse myself for the smallest mistakes. I get that they're trying to heal the damage, but it's too deep. The wound isn't healing. I'm glad that, unlike other toxic households, they were able to stop their habits and turn our lives around.
Because of this, I became a people-pleaser. I would care for others more than myself, I would stop liking my interests in order to fit in with my friends, etc, etc. After my parents argue, I would constantly do everything they ask in order to avoid more yelling. Due to my parents constantly fighting with each other, I became afraid of people. A strict teacher raising their voice too high while asking me a question would leave me vulnerable and scared.
I never knew this was trauma as I wasn't even the right age to know these things. I became self-aware at 5. I knew about mortality at 6. I developed trust issues at 8.
Even if I was able to find a safe place where I can be free with my friends, I still have issues.
Thanks for reading/listening to my story.

when i was little, my uncle started to drink Alcohol, so one night me and my babysister and my mom was going back home. when we got back home my mom bathed me and my babysister and fed us again, so my uncle started to yell at my mom to drink with him, but she said no, so my grandma and my other uncle came back from my granduncles house, so my uncle pushed my grandma into the wall and threatend to kill her, so my uncle flipped the kitchen table, so i ran to the bathroom and locked myself crying my eyes out, hearing my uncle yelling at my family so i came out of the bathroom so my mom told me, my sister, my grandma, my aunt and my cousins and my uncle paul, to my and my moms room, so my mom closed the bedroom door but my uncle broke the door, so my mom called my and my sisters dad to come to get me and my mom and my sister, so he came and he took me and my sister to his house and then the police went to my dads house and they took me and my sister and my cousins to child services.
So thats why i have anxiety and so now im traumatized because of it.
EDIT: that was my trumatic childhood story

This made me somehow realize that certain topics in this video made me more stressed than others and I can't put my finger on why.
I remember a lot of my childhood, but my childhood was big and I've always had a big imagination. I feel like I've forgotten so much that I only remember 1/5th of my life. But all of it is scattered to wear I think I know my life.
Why are different things affecting me yet I don't remember or know WHY? Nothing bad seriously happened to me unless you count 2 years ago, 8th grade. Even then it was a false alarm, it went on for hours but it was false news and realizing that was just heart renching yet so good to hear.
Other than that nothing has happened. Maybe things piled up slowly but I can't figure out what the hell is making me so stressed from the topic of feeling distant of others
Suffering trying to figure it out, it's like a brain teaser that your science teacher gives you even though she has never taught you anything but is taking it for a grade with a 10 minute limit.
Arugh!

I got bullied by a 13 year old and a 14 year old for accidentally comparing a fictional death to the 13 year olds dead dog, the 14 year old was just a friend of the 13 year old. Anyways, they both are huge parts of my horrible part of my childhood and I am still experiencing childhood. I am 9 years old rn, that incident happened in discord worst mistake of my life I changed since that happened, I felt empty since that happened. And do you know that the 14 year old actually bullied the sht out of me? Anyways, later they say that Im a literal heartless person, just because I did a mistake. I apologized to them but they didnt apologize to me back. Writing this down in public makes me feel like an actual emo, which I am not And that incident was worse than how I am explaining it to you.

I really didnt think that the way my parents treated me was that bad. My parents, well my mother more specifically, would praise me a bunch whenever I got good grades or got a great accomplishment, but as soon as I did anything not up to her standards, maybe I got an 80 for one of my grades instead of something in the 90s, I would be humiliated and told that I should be embarrassed for getting such a bad grade, even though something in the 80s is quite good. I also couldnt say anything my mother even remotely disagreed with, or else she would think I was talking back to her and she would punish me by doing something like confiscating my device, even though it was the only thing that kept me mentally stable in life.

You just described my life. I cant bear confrontation. I will put up with almost anything rather than rock the boat. I have always felt it would be selfish and shameful to say what I want or need. We were brought up to never ask for anything, our mother was a very kind person, but she did as our father said. No one ever dared to speak up to him. He was a hard working but self pitying narcissist and she was his protector. She pitied him because of his miserable upbringing. I always have felt that other peoples lives and accomplishments and needs were more important than mine. I wonder how far back in family this distress began?

I had a traumatic childhood; my mother abused me on two levels: physically and emotionally. She brushed off most of my achievements like they never happened and she humiliated me whenever I did something wrong. In fact, she punished and hit me and my brother for it. She never appreciated me and only cared about herself and money. My mom didnt want me to grow up, so she wanted to keep me down. And the worst part is that she took my autism for granted! My mom is now working at New York and enjoying herself and thats fine; I never even want to see her again!

My parents divorced before i was born and my mom had me the first 8 years of my life and was in 2 very abusive relationships during that time before finally going to my dad. Got better but the trauma followed me into my teens which created even more to this day, i will do my best to kick some of these habits, but im thankful that there are others out there who can relate (not that they had trauma) but that im not alone thank you for this video and everyone else who shared their struggles, i will continue to fight for healing in honor of that

It makes me so sad that my parents brush off the illness of PTSD. I have been diagnosed with PTSD recently and I always feel heartbroken knowing that the experiences I had growing up weren't normal. I am still living with my parents (I'm in high school) and I always try to avoid conflict as much as possible for my little sister, as I can tell she is obviously experiencing the traumatic aftereffects of her childhood that are still ongoing. I always tear up when I see her flinch every time my Dad just walks past or near her.

I'm the youngest of six. My Mom had a nervous breakdown on Christmas Day and I was bourn one month later; her behavior didn't get better until I was about four years of age and even then she was competitive with her children. This made praise for any achievements nil; my father followed suite. What do I do now? Those who don't take gross advantage of my weaknesses look at me and sigh with the labor of burden. So, are you out there? Can you understand? Or will you be among the two groups I just mentioned?

i Remember that i was abused from my father since i was a 4 years old. i was both physical and verbal abuse from my child hood memories. it was painful, and i remembered my father was a alcoholic at the time since i was a kid. my father was in a altercation at my grandma on my father's side, my father was drunk and getting in a altercation at one of my uncle, and both got in a brawl outside of the front yard. i feel like i was traumatized because of my father's action

i guess i had a traumatic childhood cause i always feels like i am not enough or good for anyoneand no one can love me cause im not pretty enough and i feels this way cause of my some relatives who compared me with my cousin all the time now i dont feel confident enough and cant feel happy even after scoring the best marks in my whole friend circle i always feels like i could have done more better than what i did

I have an adoptive parent and many many times she would tell me that my biological mother forgot about me and doesn't care about me, even though I know she will always love me, She also says No one will care about you just to see my reaction, I wish I didn't have to go through the life I did. Emotional abuse is just as bad as physical abuse and even though there are no scars, The scars are on the inside

I didn't realize how much 2-6 was similar to how I had felt since the age of like 6 to adulthood, and it is also sad to say that all three psychiatrists I have had barely helped at all taking their advice. Lol no wonder I am a misanthropist till this day, it all feels so lazy and rushed and they are more about getting the session done as fast as they can than actually trying to help.

My emotions got shut down with Ill give you something to cry about! and stop it, youre gonna make yourself sick! Mom was a closet alcoholic and covert narc. Dad was stern, scary, short fused and probably on the spectrum and had no idea what to do with emotional issues. Thanks for the validation and comfort that I get from your vids. You are doing important and life changing work.

I have severe anxiety of people yelling. Sometimes I just dont talk or go out at all bc I never expect a good reaction from people. My mom ignores my anxiety and gets mad at me for expressing negative feelings. I feel like this has made me very sensitive bc it is hard for me to take criticism, especially from my dad bc it always comes in a harsh manner. I hope I can fix myself

I'm unraveling all this damage inside of myself. I was watching these videos because I want to go to school for a career in counselling, but I'm finding out that I had highly toxic parents and suffered a traumatic childhood. I wondered what was all wrong with me but wow. And I'm in counselling so I'll be bringing all this to my counsellor

I literally did this at school with my teachers and Im the fun weird teen who is does everything for them. But one time they did something that really hurt me and I seriously just stopped my feet and fell to the floor while saying its not fair and when I realised this I immediately got up and started laughing and they started laughing with me

I can actually relate to most of these points. The only one I cannot relate to is the risky one, mainly because anytime I started doing something risky, my parents started yelling at me, screaming at me and then telling another horror story about some rando who got killed or permanently crippled doing the activities I was doing.
