Are you a Highly Sensitive Person? If so, you might be wondering what an HSP is. This video is designed to help you understand what HSP are and how they differ from other people. Did you know that 30% of the population is made up of Highly Sensitive People? A highly sensitive person is someone whose brain processes all information very deeply, including emotions, thoughts, and sensory input. This makes them more physically sensitive and emotionally sensitive than other people. High sensitivity is considered a normal, healthy personality trait, although one that like all personality traits comes with its own advantages and drawbacks. HSPs are often negatively described as too sensitive. But being an HSP isnt a bad thing. Continue watching the video to understand the traits HSP people experience

Maybe I'm one. Used to cry over the slightest thing as a kid, I'd even cry for days over the death of an animal in a book I'd read. I thought I'd eventually got over it but I had to do some soul searching recently after a breakup and now I feel like maybe all I'd done is just lock off all my emotions away, because I realize I either act like an emotionless psychopath, (maybe I'm staying on the guard for emotions that pop up and are immediately pushing them away, no matter what kind of emotion they are because I'm scared of them) or if a situation gets me by surprise, shit gets through and I turn into a complete neurotic emotional wreck.
Sometimes I get mad at myself for feeling sad so strongly, trying to ignore it just makes it come back stronger later. How tf does one be themself when my self is like this? nobody likes someone like this, heck I wouldn't like to be with someone like me; If I'm happy I'm giddy like a jumpy, licky, clingy dog seeing it's owner return, if I'm sad I'm a complete downer. Probably explains how i managed to stay single so long and even the one person who was so attracted to me that she approached me herself and initially couldnt have enough of me got tired of me pretty quickly after my emotional side showed through over how much she seemed to love me, had a breakdown over the breakup at a level of intensity I never expected; that probably sealed my fate.
I'm supposed to be capable of handling responsibilities, especially since that's most of all I've got being a guy, but how do I do that if I'm either spending the entire day distracted being sad because somebody made a valid criticism of my work and my dumbass interpreted that as an unfixable character fault or I'm constantly letting people off the hook because I feel for them or coming off like a bossy assh0le when I'm clamped down because I tick people off by just telling them what to do without greeting them or asking how they're doing / sometimes miss cues when someone's in need of support because I'm trying so hard to keep my emotions at bay to avoid being exploited or coming off cringy/unprofessional/weird/oversharing. I just feel like an alien.
Maybe I should just go see a therapist already.

being high sensitive is really no fun, I hate myself for that so much, Im often misunderstood and everything, its annoying how fast I can blow up over nothing and that it always feels like im the only one who apologies after doing (according to others) something wrong even though it was the other persons fault. :, D, im definitely also often wrong but my brain/heart doesnt get it xD
Im also often being misunderstood when im talking, people think Im trying to start an argumentation or a fight solely based on the tone of my voice, its seems people often think Im always angry and aggressive even though im not. the best part is, when people say: dont be so anry bla bla, guurl im not angry Im talking in a normal tone. :, D
I hope that all the high sensitive people find a way to not let everything ruin your day and that sometimes even the tiny problem doesn't weigh on your heart for years

Even a little bit of loud noises give me such a strong headache, which is unbearable. Sometimes I feel like my nerves are gonna burst out. Being a highly sensitive person small things makes me emotional. Plus I have anxiety, I'm an overthinker, and on the top of it I'm dealing with mild depression. My anxiety and overthinking problems have literally destroyed my dreams of becoming a doctor. I was once a topper, a very hard working person, but now I feel like my mind is giving up along with my body. But I'm very grateful to my parents for giving me chances to accomplish my dream, even though we belong to a middle class family in India. I'll definitely enter a medical college next year. Gonna make my parents and my siblings proud.

HSP turns out to actually be adult Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD, a condition not clinically understood due to a lack of studies and data on adult ASD. The study you reference in this video is based on childhood autism, which until very recently was the only reference we had for understanding autism. More research on adult ASD is being made now. Autism and ADHD are bio-neuro-physiological conditions concerning the structure and function of the brain and central nervous system. They intersect significantly. I researched Drs. Aron's work thoroughly when I wrote my book, but am convinced based on the info coming out now that what they called HSP (non-clinical term, by the way) is actually adult ASD intersecting with adult ADHD.

Are people absolutely certain that a person cannot have both autism and be highly sensitive simultaneously? Because Im autistic; theres no questioning it because I have several traits that fit my diagnosis to a T, especially with communication and thinking differently. And because of those things, people get upset with me, even though Ive been desperately trying not to my entire life. And Im highly sensitive when people get upset with me, it legitimately hurts and I dont know how to stop being annoying. Everyone says to toughen up, but I dont think I can. This seems like how people say, ADHD or autism all the time, but I definitely have both, too.

Hi guys, 31 year old male HSP here. I had problems with depression and substance abuse as a teen because of my high sensitivity and empathy. Chasing a girl who is totally opposite whole my life didn't help either (she is my wife now. One thing that is helping me and what changed my life is Zen meditation and Buddhism as a whole. It comes natural for us to be aware of ourselves. It will help you not to identify with your thoughts and emotions but you will keep all the cool stuff like reading people and situations. It will answer some of the deepest questions about what and who you are and it will enable you to live without self-made obstacles. Cheers

I don't know if I am a highly sensitive person but I can't bear even small changes it causing me too much anxiety I became unproductive. Right now the person I'm close with will resign next month and I'm so anxious and depressed it is showing physically. I'm feeling lethargic and sleeping more and more I sometimes get nauseous whenever I have to go to work and heart pounds so hard it hurts listening to music while commuting helps a bit. I am initially ok with loud sound but for the last 5 years I became too sensitive that even people's whisper is too unbearable sometimes

I have been an HSP my whole life. Everyone bullied me to the point I got deep scars I can never forget, and now I am 32 years old, and still, I get categorized as HSP. Back when I was young, I hated everything about myself. I never got the help I needed, as the environment I live in does not provide such support, but now, I am trying my best to help others as much as I can. Yes, I am an HSP person. I embraced it, and I wish people stop hurting me because of this, as I never, nor ever will hurt anyone, and this video came at the right time, Thank you, sincerely

I just realized Im a HSP, I always realized when people changed and even when I first met people once I could tell when I was speaking to them or to the fake version of them. I do feel when people are sad, mad, happy, disgusted it sometimes affects me but I try to hide it and now Im trying to embrace it. Im highly anxious person, I always overthink and Im often told to stop being anxious or learn to control it but then thing is I cant it just comes as my nature.

Was kinda self reflecting and got this vdo. I don't have all the traits of a hsp but do have some of them like overthinking lil things, getting emotional over things that many others don't get that easily, can't bear too much noise and environment affects my mood.
I think I should work a bit on overthinking nd getting emo points coz they r not so helpful in anyway. And I'm trying to do that. Ig now that ik smtg abt it I'll try to learn more: )

As the only HSP in a family of 6, I always wondered why I was the only one who needed sunglasses when it was only slightly bright outside or needed cover my ears on the Fourth of July or reacted so severely to needle pokes. My family would look at me like whats wrong with you? And even after knowing that this is an inherent trait, I still cant seem to make them understand much better that this is just the way I am its not an overreaction
reply

You know, as an HSP, I have discovered that it is not an entirely negative trait. Yes, living in general is way harder for an HSP than for a normal person, but the advantage is, you can a lot easier notice subtle sings in people's actions and use that to your advantage. Still, being an HSP man is putting me under too much pressure to consider this a positive trait. One day I will learn how to utilize all it's advantages, tho.
reply

I am not diagnosed but I could relate. I notice changes sometimes. The thing is I don't find crowd noises annoying, it's if a louder noise comes in with, like a teacher screaming or a roar of an audience.
That makes me uncomfortable. I cry over the smallest stress and really can't control it.
This might be caused by other things, i have a very supportive family.
Do let me know if you read this and found something.

I can strongly read someones energy or vibe, if theres a bad vibe i tend to feel very uncomfortable and angry around that person. I just avoid and dont talk to them at all i thought there was something wrong with me being anti social but thats not it. When i meet someone new i tend to be very happy and talkative around that person then when i notice a negative vibe from that person i bounce back and dont talk at all to them.
reply

I dont know if Im an HSP but its impossible for me to keep my vibe when someone elses is down. For example, if my sister is feeling depressed but I am happy, I notice that my mood gradually becomes down/depressed and its so subtle & its never something I am paying attention to, I just notice later in the day that my mood changed after seeing my sisters mood. And I dont know if this happens with everyone or just my sisters.
reply

I don't think I'm a sensitive person.
With me I can detect somebodies mood swing just by anything immediately. Whether it be tone, expression, body language or their words in general. I also tend to feel negative emotions alot harder and more frequently. But that's probably also because I've been taught to bottle up emotions as a kid and I don't know how to express them healthily yet (I am trying to though: ) )

I don't know if I'm an HSP. Though I am some of the things mentioned in the video, I was never diagnosed with it (If it is something that should be diagnosed) I actually (Thank God) have a great life, but I find myself breaking under light stress, worrying about small things, and being overwhelmed quite easily. I also suffered from anxiety a few years back. Can anyone tell me if I am HSP?
reply

idk if im an hsp or not but every time i see someone that might be going through a hard time or anything i automatically become sad, even if they arent sad but they look sad. i usually cry a lot as well if someone gets mad at me, even when people arent that mad at me. i was told im just dramatic but im not so sure because i get more sad when other people are sad than when im actually sad.
reply

Can you do RSD? It stands for rejection sensetivety disorder and its really bad to live with. It could help some people if they could realize they might have it. When I realized, I got better and started being less quiet during group or one on one conversations. Although I'm still a bit bad with any type of critisim. Just search it up. It's serious, no joke.
reply

OK, so I am a HSP but I am also a people pleaser so as much as I want to help people that I think looks sad. Im afraid of what other people think of me if I help them communicate with them in that case, cause most people feel that way at my school are either bullied or talk bad about so. look, I know, it sounds selfish, but I have a reputation to keepsorry
reply

Yes! The sound part i can relate to. Yesterday i was at a Christmas party and the speaker put _RIGHT BEHIND ME_ so if anybody said anything even remotely bad to me (even a inside joke between me and my friends) i would lash out (and would start stuttering if under pressure. Oh also i cry easily so i always tear up right after i get angry
reply

This makes sense to me because I grew up in a dysfunctional family. I always felt like I was different because my family is thinkers and I'm a feeler. They would always say I'm sensitive over little things making me become an HSP. I learned that it's a positive trait instead of a negative one and I'm glad you spread more awareness for this trait!
reply

Honestly, I thank Psych2Go so much for this video, as it really makes me feel validated and more understood about HSP and the fact that such a thing exists. Even going through the comments and seeing similar people struggle with such things, it brings comfort and I hope you all feel less alone too. Take care everyone
reply

as a guy whos an HSP, a lot of the time I stay super quiet, because society usually portrays men as dominant and cold (Im 62, have some broad shoulders and a deep voice. People assume Im just cold and intimidating, when Im not. Its hard to accept that youre unique, but thats okay! You are perfect in your own way

Me and my girlfriend is watching stranger things, and there are some violent scenes where i just have to close my eyes. She called me a baby and it seems like she just thinks i want attention. I havent told her i am an HSP yet, i just fear she is going to see it as a burden
