If I had to guess I-d say Area 51 is a US military archive and experimental technology testing facility. They likely have all their most important documents and artifacts kept there that if leaked to the public would prove just how insanely corrupt they have been in EVERY administration.
They probably also test new experimental tech there as well as storing all the tech that they-ve created there. I-d wager that the government is significantly more technologically advanced than we have any idea, and that they store and headquarter most of it at Area 51.
