I'll never understand why most people only cover the bad of Kowloon. Don't get me wrong, many of us likely wouldn't survive long there. but there was so much good too.
Kowloon was gorgeous. In a haunting and chilling sort of way. So much detail packed in such a small area. Arguably the most lively spot to ever exist for humanity could somehow feel so derelect and abandoned in a way. Many roofs had gardens and water was pumped to wells on the ground to the top of the roofs for people to use. Whole families would live there. Grandparents would gather on the rooftops and play games and watch television while their grandchildren did their homework from on of the many schools established by the Salvation Army, and the mothers and fathers worked.
The average apartment size was also much bigger than 40 sq ft. They were still incredibly small spaces, especially for families, but were generally 200+ sq. Ft.
Lastly, most former residents remember Kowloon extremely fondly to the point of romantisizing it. Describing it as a tight knit family where everyone looked out for one another.

I lived here for eighteen years. now, when I listen to people saying how bad life is for them because their mobile phone or other device doesn't work well, I just smile and say nothing, because there is nothing I could say to save them from themselves. It had sone great and good points about it, if you were connected but the overall experience was that now that I'm nearly seventy, I'm fitter than everyone else I know because of the habits of living as if at any time I would have to run from something or or to something. Hard to explain but the soft Western way of life makes for weak and ignorant people who think that a 'cause' is something that you do after lunch before your badminton game in the evening. If they only knew that life is too precious to waste on trivia. Here come the hate!

I stayed at a small hotel in Kowloon back in 1970 along with several other American and Aussie military types on leave from Vietnam. Had a great time but got too drunk one night and ended up lost in the back-streets of what was at the time referred to as 'Old Kowloon'. Finally found my way out and back to my hotel where I was severely admonished for my foolishness by several people, most of whom were actually amazed that I was still alive. If I knew then what I know now I would never have stayed in Kowloon, and certainly not in 'Old Kowloon', but all in all, it was still a unique and great time in my life.

The only reason that dog meat was eaten in Kowloon Walled city was actually because during its time under British occupation in Hong Kong the people there were not governed and the traditional food of dog stew could only be made there as Britain outlawed it everywhere else in Hong Kong. The city technically didn-t belong to either China or Britain. In my opinion that-s not exactly a bad thing it-s just keeping a traditional food alive lol

Before you think $5 a month is cheap rent keep in mind that was the rent in 1990 when adjusted for inflation that-s about $12 a month meaning you would be playing 1990 equivalent of $4, 380 a year to live in that place and that-s not even counting the food and the heroin you would probably need to live in that place.

But you never showed in this video even for a second how -life- really looks like inside this city, but only some unrelated images and comparisons! And the only reason I watched it was exactly the implicit intention to show his -life- looks like inside this city!

7: 54 Kowloon walled city as not in Kowloon park. The pie true your showing is off Hongkongs Kowloon park, this however is not where it used to be, the real park is near Kowloon city, not in Tsim Sha Tsui.

Oh my God as an Alaskan I would die if everybody in the population was right here. It already feels like that there's too many people up here to begin with let alone right on top of each other like that!

putting people who eat dog meat on the same level as gangsters etc is a bit weird. it was also mainly ordinary people so this is generally just a bit of a weird way to paint this place

Wait, many of us do live in this crowded space. Where is it? Most live in their minds filled with hate, amusement, and social media garbage! Reality is just a word to them.

The Kowloon walled city was not as bad as it is described. I lived there for a couple of years when I was very young. It's a very interesting place. Lots of memories in there.

Exactly. so over population is a myth amd fear of privilege folk losing control. Overly densed is a better take on it. If the whole world can be squeezed in RI.

Please use a real city, I could rent my backyard to 500 people and beat this but it wouldn't be a fair example

I have family that lived in Kowloon. Everyone knew their doctors and dentists for decades. This is just a lot of assumptions based on ignorance.

We should be thankful to God that God didn't create us to that place. He could have put us in such difficulty, but didn't, he is so merciful --.

If mankind keeps breeding the way we do now, that is what the future will look like. Make another couple of billions and find out.

This is awful. No one deserves to live like this. I swear Junji Ito did a short comic based on this city about lack of privacy.
