segregation and oppression aren't good. But leaving a vital resource for world trade in the hands of a third world country - which lacks the technology and wealth to maintain it - is also not good. I wish panama wasn't a corrupt wreck of a country, if it managed the canal like norway manages its oil, we would have no problems, high quality neutral custodianship would be ideal
A large empire taking control of the canal makes sense to them though, thats why china has been trying to do it. And panama lacks the strength to resist foreign control like that. American control seems, again, to be the lesser evil
but if they're gonna do it again, it could at least be done better. Make the entire country of panama into a proper US state, and give full citizenship to everyone in it. No more oppression or othering. The region should have the full support and protection of the us government

Finally, bravo RealLifeLore. You certainly did your research and fact checked Trump and his ridiculous lies. Of course, China is interested in Panama. The Chinese are a part of our culture since the interoceanic railroad was built (another potentially interesting video. Hundreds of thousands Chinese people live in Panama alongside Panamanians, even in the most remote or dangerous places. The don't live in a segregated Panama Canal Zone. Maybe its time to learn a thing or two from the Chinese. Americans should offer a viable alternative to China. Forcing other countries to antagonize China its almost pathetic. Its essentially admiting that you cannot compete.

Panama will never negotiate on relinquishing their control over the canal
Now this is a disingenuous statement that you KNOW isn't true. Certainly, a layman could think as such, since the panamanian government keeps making this exact statement. But as a student of history and geopolitics, you should know there is often a large gulf between what people say they will do, and what they actually do. Much of politics is about posturing, and We will not negotiate is, and has always been an attempt to put up a strong front and discourage the opponent, not an actual prediction, and only occasionally a statement of intent.

I grew up on a base in the Canal Zone for the decade between Noriega and the Millennium handover. We'd take class field trips down the road to the Miraflores locks, go inside the building to stay cool but outside you could climb inside the demo mule (the machines that pull the boats through the canal, a job that used to be done by actual mules) to play with the knobs and dials. I'd often see cruise ships passing through the canal from our base housing. It's weird not having a home town, and even weirder that people are talking about what used to be a semblance of one for me. Anyway, have a nice day!

The tariff war nobody wants is why trump is talking about the Canal. Tariffs will ruin whole sectors of the economy, and only starting a war against an Ally to seize control of global shipping would offset that. It's straight theft and murder of course, with no provocation or justification. And the world will change it's habits to stop Trump's meddling, so it is mostly working as a distraction from the government takeover, and handouts to musk. Seems to work, nobody in power is doung their job now so, hey. Let the bad times roll lol

Panama is just like Greenland or Canada part of this administrations smoke screen. They just keep throwing so much shit against the fan that nobody has time to be properly outraged and do something about the insane things that are happening. Nobody has time to complain about the worlds richest man dismanteling the goverment agency investigating him, complete disregard of the constitution or that a vaccine denier is now in charge of public health when Trump is speculating about going to war with America's closest allies.

I can think of one solution that doesn't require war. Panama seems to only want the canal as it provides large boost to its gdp and not the land itself. The US cares more about the security than money. What if the US agreed to seized all operations of the canal (including the costs to maintain it) while simultaneously giving 100% of the income to Panama. This would result in Panama continuing to get the boost to its gdp (while also avoiding expenses) while also giving the US control over it.

this video has infact made it abundantly clear why usa should infact take back control by any means necessary. and its also high likely if the usa wanted, panama would have no problem in becoming a state of the us just like canada. also please stop with your idiotic biases towards trump by showing a clip of nazi democrats who were siphoning of billions of tax payer dollars via usaid. you will only loose your trust doing so. be neutral and avoid your biases

Well it's not surprising the canal wouldn't be on the minds of Americans because nobody was talking about it in media. Also, call me crazy but I don't think its a bad thing for America to operate in the best interest of America. If other countries had the power and influence America has they would do the same. Imperialist Please nothing is for for free. Everything comes with a cost and sometimes you have to choose between the lesser of two evils.

no china is not procedes to detail an already proven catastrophic possible situation and precedes to say we really cant even know whats up because the Chinese don’t really say what they do anyway
i am a sort of conservative who’s also watching your media and i really do not appreciate the political leaning of your messages, i would really like a political neutral content, i suggest many people would follow a more neutral content

The sad part about this is that there was a simple solution to all the Chinese soft power investment that they're using to pressure the US.
Pay countries to like us by building them infrastructure and industrial capabilities for free. It's way cheaper to buy allies than to conquer and oppress people; that's the real reason the cold war was cold, fighting was more expensive than posturing and dumping money into foreign aid programs.

Holy crap this is a slanted editorial presented as reporting. Lean left much China's B&R is a loan, not a gift or an investment. Along with paying the loan back, political and social points must be met. Trump did not commit troupes to Panama, but said it's not off the table. This is a bargaining tactic to help the US economy to recover from the last 4 years.

Previous poor leadership in the construction of the second lane by America was despicable however ultimately it turned out to be one of the best deals for them or there could be no better outcome than what they've been able to do with what the Americans built and whether it's 38, 000 or $28, 000 men mean it was an excellent deal for them

Thousands of Americans died to build build it. We paid Panama for it. We paid to build it. Carter had no right to just give it away. Now we are being charged to use it. China does have ports at both ends. All facts no way to spend it. We are taking it back and here is one last fact there is nothing Panama can do to stop us. I love it.

Also, I would like to point out that it is impossible for China or anyone to deliberately sabotage the canal using a port or a ship. This is because to enter Panama Canal waters you need to surrender the ship to a Panamanian ACP captain. So even for the ports inside or in the entrances to the waterway, the ships are under ACP control.

After supporting Panamanian independence from Colombia, the U. S. took over construction from the French in 1904, excavated over 240 million cubic yards of earth and opened the canal in 1914. It wasn't cheap to build, with a price tag at the time of $375 million, equivalent to almost $12 billion in today's dollars.

Because it's an economically strategic piece of infrastructure that would strengthen American hegemony. It's the American equivalent to the Straight of Hormuz. Why we gave it up in the first place continues to baffle me. Should have just made the area around the canal a territory and slapped a giant military base on it.

If 38, 000 legal migrant workers got sick and died in the United States today, it wouldn't be wrong to say 38, 000 Americans died. If you're living here legally, I'd say you're american. Since at the time, the canal zone was american territory, the legal migrants living and working there were Americans.

15 billion doesn't sound that bad. The life cost is crazy, but to include disease in that number is ridiculous. I want to know how many workplace working condition accidents there were. Disease would count if they were like, purposefully being infected. Goofball.
