How Italy's Geography got Badly Nerfed The last part of Italian history is quite wrong: despite the autonomist parties, Italy is one of the fewer country in the globe that fought to get united in the 1800. Despide the regional differences, we had 3 indipendent wars against foreign rulres, that had been fought despite the Italian states rulers werent keen on unify the penisula for several reasons. The people riots and risings in many part of Italy (from the north to the south) supported by the republicans, obbligaded the Savoy to take the lead in the unification, in order to maitain at least a monarchy. Milan and Venice rose against the Absburg, Florence and the most of the cities in central Italy send volunteers and freely joined the new Italian kindom. Romans let the trups enter the city despide the popes will and the French opposition. 1070 volunteers arrived in Sicily with Garibaldi and at the time they arrive close to Naples there was over 20. 000 volunteers that joined Garibaldis trups. So even in the south of Italy people (at least the some of them) tought that the Savoy were better than the Borbons who had failed to renovate the south. Of course the Savoy failed afterwars, beacuse they impose their rules and politics ingnoring the need of a new constitution etc. and never really help the south to renovate as they hoped.
So overall, we dont have really a strong national identity, but in Europe usually state are created by kings/rulers or by separating from others, we fought to be unided (how peculiar, but we adore our diversity and we take much pride in our regional identity.

Nah, their geography never got nerfed. Even after fall of the Roman Empire the Mediterranean was important center of trade (until fall of Byzantine Empire. Venice, Milan, Florence, Genoa. were oil-rich, owned greek lands and islands, also Crimea. It was human ego and megolomania of Dukes and princes and the Pope that broke Italy into series of relatevily weak states. Also in the -late middle game- Italy had a perfect stance to access Africa, they actually reached Eritrea and Somali deep into Red sea. Could they reach Tunis, Algiers, Egypt, etc? Of course! But they were too late to the party. Imagine what Italy could achieve, if it was unified early? Like in 1820s or in 1848. Italy could be another rival for Britain at the seas, just like Spanish Empire once was.

Italy's geography is also a bane to it in modern times due to how easy it is to invade it with modern naval power. Back in ancient times it would have been easier to defend, but its long and thin stretch means that large powers can easily invade from every direction and once they establish a beachhead, they can start swarming all over which would immediately doom the outstretched small Italian army.
Geography during ancient times? Great. Geography during modern times and modern technology? Bad.

Italy, as much as some people may romanticise the history, is better off getting divided into at least two parts, the north and the south. It is time that the south is allowed to solve its own problems. It is also time for the north to start having leaders who have the interests of northerners (the few native northerners who remain) as a first priority. Federalism has been proposed before, but it always meets fierce opposition, normally again from non-northerners.

If you assume humanity has a chance at eventually becoming a Kardashev level 3 civilization (equivalent energy production as harnessing all the energy of every star in our Galaxy, and we are only currently a Kardashev level 0. 60 civilization (Kardashev level 1 produces 9, 450 times as much energy as we do - the equivalent of the Sun's energy that reaches the Earth - so you can see how steep the curve is, then we're still in the early game: )

Italy's biggest nerf was being the seat of the Roman Empire, thus a target and being split between/ganked by various powers for a near millennia. If Italy could have at least remained a unified state in some alternate reality they could have held the Malta, Suez, and Gibraltar and been a major naval power akin to the British empire, and have a sizable sphere of influence in Europe by controlling Mediterranean trade.

Basically Italy had a solid early game option, botched the mid game transition and so couldn't consolidate its resources to build up and out towards America, and only got to reunify at the beginning of the late game and so had to spend the rest of the game trying to get the remainder of its territory which was the most defensive parts.

Nerfed? Who titled this gem? My people are from the Italian Alps; a place that used to be called Forno di Zoldo. It wasnt too long ago that the passes would close for the entire winter so we'd still be able to jack up war elephants right up to the late 20th Century. Planes and tracked vehicles would prob cause a slight problem.

If Italy unified sooner it might have been able to break into France earlier but even without that they did not industrialize quick enough making their economy weak. Countries like South Korea prove that it doesn-t matter how big you are you can create a strong economy because ideas can be more valuable than manufacturing.

As an Italian, I have noticed several errors throughout the video, both for Italy itself and even other countries, as well as some timeline errors and some parts in which too little information was given to have a proper perspective on the historical events

Saying eastern Rome invaded Italy is like saying someone is breaking into their house.
I refuse to use the term Byzantine empire as it's just plain incorrect, Greeks called themselves Romans until 1822 and were Roman for all intents and purposes.

Interesting to se thease numbers and % of population beeing thrown out in the video wen not even today we have no exact number of humans on the planet yet your video claims we have an accurate number of the population 2000 years ago or more -

Great video! Really explained it well and encapsulated our history very well. The only thing I would like to add about the WW2 is that the Italian people also helped to free us a lot, with the partisans etc

Ok this is a small thing but at 9: 26 that's not the correct stream of the Po river, you took the wrong branch at the start; the Po flows further north, across Turin (9: 36.

Worth noting also that from the beginning of the Roman Dominate, the capital city of the Western empire was no longer Rome, but rather various cities within the Po valley.

Great video. One correction- the first -civilization- wasn't in Mesopotamia but Nubia. Highly recommend -Africa's Great Civilizations- by Louis Gates / PBS

6: 18 and this is why geographic armor might not always be a good thing: it defends your enemies from you just as much as it defends you from them
