How to Safely Cross a Piranha Infested River when i was about 8, i went on a school trip to a beach here in Palmas, Tocantins, Brazil. Right when the bus stoped, all the kids gathered around the windows to watch a woman who was coming out of the water, holding her child up above, she threw the kid on the sand and walked what was left of the way out of the water, we werent that close to her and still could see blood coming out of her feet, because she was attacked by Piranhas, pretty bad timing, but i was glad the kid was ok, that beach has always been a big no no for me, but it got way way safer with time, today it sometimes has swimming competitions, but at some seasons people are advised not to enter

you are lost in the Amazonian forest and need to reach human settlement across the river
step 1- wait a few month for the right season.
if I'm going to wait a few month, might as well find a rock, break it, build a make shift axe knife or saw and cut a few trees to make a raft. might be faster then waiting for January.
Then if I'm hungry, might be a good idea to trade in 1 toe, to eat a piranha fish, specially if I the civilization on the is nearby and able to give first aid (unless I need to wait a few month for January)

Soooooo. there I was standing fast on the South bank of the Amazon, taking a quick breather from being chased & hounded incessantly by a long forgotten angry indigenous tribe. Apparently I wasn't suppose to cross their village during one of their tribal sacrifices. Just in case you asked, yeah, it's the High point of the Dry season, mid July, this year has been especially dry and I had a few open wounds, it was early dawn and the water was still where I was.

Spent some time on the Amazon. Strictly according to the natives, Red Bellies aren't feared at all. I swam in the river multiple times, especially when the Boto (freshwater dolphins) are nearby. I really only feared spooking a black caiman. The natives try to stay away from the black piranha due to the fact that they swim in small, territorial groups. Our guide had a big chunk taken out of his bicep from a cranky black piranha.

Thank you sooooooo much on teaching me how to do this! After watching this video, I tried it out myself! The doctor says I probably won-t ever be able to use my right leg to walk again, but this is my first time in an American hospital (as I-m Canadian, and they must be trying to charge me $50 000 more. I hope many other people can also practice this technique regularly! :)

Wouldn't I just wait for the fisherman to comeback If I knew there had been a fisherman around? --Also the only way to know that a boat was around is to actually SEE - the boat! I think I would have cried to get the fisherman's attention, but I guess that's just me! -

In order for you to be eaten alive down to your skeleton would take 300 to 500 starved piranhas somewhere about 5 minutes. The likelihood of this is so miniscule.
Fine, as if you needed to be stripped down to skeleton before you die.

I have worked in piranha-infested waters, you can go swimming with them, they don't hurt people. They are only an issue if you are bleeding and thrashing around, otherwise, they are harmless.

I read somewhere that the local natives worry more about some fish (don't recall the name) that likes to swim into orifices and it won't come out. Very painful and may get infected.

Bro, if I'm in a scenario where I am stuck having to decide to cross the river and die, or don't cross, and die. I am pretty certain I can't determine the time of the year to do it lol

3: 13 -Piranhas are nocturnal creatures and are generally sleeping during the night. - I'm sure you meant to say they are -diurnal creatures- then, the exact opposite of nocturnal.
reply

Okay 5 minutes but after the first bite you'll stop swimming because of the pain and then in 10-30 seconds you'll go into shock and then pass out and then it's all over.

i take care of piranhas, i have a 200 gallon tank with quite a few in it, and can firmly tell you, they are more afraid of you then you should be of them.
reply

Step 1: break the laws of phisics and gravity
Step 2: levitate
Step 3: Make up for the fact that you just broke a hole though the fabric of reality

reply

Piranhas are diurnal-they are active in the daytime, not nocturnal, which means they are active at night. You need to correct that; it's confusing.
reply

It's been proven that human blood doesn't excite sharks so what gives you the data/insight that says Piranha's are gonna be drawn to human blood?
reply

Put some illegal South China fishing vessel in the river. Let them do their thing. Then swim across, easy as stealing candy from a baby.

Jeramy wade from river monsters showed that they are not that aggressive he got into a pool and jumped into a river full of piranha
reply

I have swam in the Amazon with Red Bellies and Black Piranhas. What do they do when you swim? They run from you! They wont do nada!
reply

hello?
dry season is between december and march
and wet season is between june and september
its southern hemisphere

reply

i'm really glad we get a look at a calendar so that that way we can plan on the best time to not get destroyed by piranhas.
reply

Very useful information. In case I ever visit Amazon river and there arise a need to cross the river, this will be very useful.
reply

does anyone think about how humans are so much scarier than any other creature on earth because we kill and eat almost any animal?
reply

You-re talking about crossing the Amazon safely (full of piranhas, there-s crocodiles and sharks lmao. You won-t be safe
reply

Nobody survived where is piranha, 's, doesn't matter what months is or others reasons above. Good luck with swimming.
reply

The two things I would have said from watching the Planet Earth series is 1: don't bleed and 2: don't thrash around.
reply

1. Electrocute the water for 1 hour
2. Turn off electricity
3. Put on Iron Man suit
4. Fly over river

reply

Ok, you swim at night because of piranhas but end up getting swallowd up by caimans that are active at night. Lol
