Plus, If you develop & prosper Ethiopia-s economy, how expensive is it to pay for port services? Ethiopia has done it for 33 years anyways, right? It-s absurd to threaten Eritrea and Somalia while happily paying Djibouti for decades.
But the burning question is -Why now? - The answer is easy. In light of where Abiy took the country the past 5 years, he has made the country economically in a bad shape, hurting & desperate. Paying Djibouti for port service is becoming a burden. So now instead of taking responsibility he is ascribing the problem to lack of ports. And that-s how he eventually thought the port question should be solved. Plus he-s desperately struggling to bring Ethiopians together & he thought he could try to use this -Red Sea- card.
It-s a bad move only expected from novice politicians because it fosters negative ramifications for the people of the Horn of Africa. It-s shame for the African Union, which is established on respect for colonial boundaries, to call Addis Abeba its home.

Well when you live with white people in lands they have stolen, you understand how they think. I am Eritrean and there will be no chance at all for Eritrea to wage war against Ethiopians. The Ethiopians are telling you the same in the comments too. You see we both are not idiots to carry on white people wish in our region.
Ethiopia can't not and will not invade Eritrea because just they wanted red sea access. It is against the international laws. I am for Ethiopians to prosper and develope and they will. Red sea access through Eritrea can be done through access fee payments to Eritrea and Eritrea should be understanding and make the fee possible.
Just get this fact, John Smith, Eritrea and Ethiopia will never ever again go to war but they will join their armies and defend their lands.
But if your prediction actually happens, well Eritrea is capable to defend itself for eternity.

Specifically the part about the Eritrean government forcing soldiers into virtually lifelong slavery, and the repercussions for deserters and their families? I have a client whose family fled Eritrea because the father/husband (who is disabled from war injuries) was tortured and repeatedly put into positions he could not physically withstand, and his family was retaliated against when he resisted. They are seeking asylum and we could use some good resources on the abuses of the Eritrean government. I would love to use your video, but unfortunately secondary evidence is not very admissible in court unless the content creator is able to testify about their expertise and provide a CV with their accomplishments to verify their expertise. You don't have any skin in the game and it might be easy for you to do some research on your comfy couch or desk, but real people could suffer dire consequences if impressionable radicalists watch your video and use your rhetoric as justification for extremist action. Eritrea's independence wasn't just given to the Eritrean people, It was paid for by the blood and sweat of our gallantry martyrs. After 32 years of independence, our colonial warmongering neighbors still cant fathom our existence as nation. Eritrea has always been open to letting Ethiopia use their ports but access and ownership are two different things. If Ethiopia is that worried about their increasing population, they can always try birth control.

Being landlocked can be a bad thing but also a good thing. Yes, you have no port access but you don-t need to spend on a navy which can save you billions. Landlocked countries in Europe are doing every well for the most part. If you have good relations with neighbors and a fair tax on goods that come from countries with ports, it could work well. Being a landlocked large country like Ethiopia makes it unique.

Very interesting. I do not understand why the rest of the world keep Somalialand chained to the rotting corpse of Somalia when the have been de facto independent longer than they were part of Somalia. Recognize their independence and let Ethiopia negotiate a treaty with them for access to the sea that can benefit both countries and also give competition to Djibouti.

I believe it's about time that Ethiopia is entitled to have access to the Red Sea. The Red Sea is historically the Ethiopian Sea, the Ethiopian armed forces should and must take decisive military action against the brutal and warmonger Eritrean dictator to free the Eritrean people and make Ethiopia return its lost access to the Red Sea as soon as possible.
