Of for crying out loud the middle ages were defined by their COLOUR. Everything was lovely painted and dashed in colour. Its after time and sot form coal and the killing smoke of the industrial revolution that they truly lost their spark. Victorian england sucked - and when you are about to rip off Nigeria and China on the basis that you and your technology are superior anything resembling their medival structures and tec has to be dark. Goth were inspired by Victorian funerals and underground movements like other commentators have added. Goth borrowed an astetic from victorian england - thats it. There is not a connection, its based of outdated knowledge and a flimsy lie of superiority that justified the blood never setting on the British empire. You can like a fashion form a time an dnot need to base your self on thata time understanding of the world.

It's kinda sad when they talk about all the cathedrals that they don't talk about Visigoth and Ostrogoth architecture. I took an early medieval art history course and some of the stuff built in Italy/Spain really is beautiful. The Dark Ages weren't really dark at all, it has a lot of amazing art and intersections of culture! The Renaissance and the Enlightenment really diminished all the good things that happened in the Middle Ages.

Please note that Goethe did not write Gothic or Dark Romantic literature. He rather belonged to the movement of Classicism that was very much influenced by the ideas of enlightenment. Gothic/Dark Romantic literature came around later. In his old age, Goethe complained about E. T. A. Hoffmann, Germany's most famous Gothic author, calling his works a lunatic's madness and phantasies, as if caused by excessive opium abuse.

So where in Europe are there goths? I live in Marseille in SE France & there are very few goths around here. I guess there aren't many, if any, goths in hot countries like Albania, Greece, Bulgaria, Romania? Or mediterranean countries i. e Portugal, Spain, Italy? Since people in those countries have tanned skin and goths tend to have pale skin?

I like Gothic architecture, but not Gothic people. I think people are trying to hard to be cool and edgy when they decided to be Goth, while Gothic architecture isn't because it's a building with hard work being put in its design and its construction.

Goths were a mixed group of people. Germans, Slavs, Dacians, etc. Some historians underlined that Goths and Gaetae (the old name of Dacians) were the same!

according to ostrogthic istorian iordanes, the goth are, non dubitem, in fact the GETIAN, they was not germanic (they just including some germanic tribe )
