It's amazing, I remember learning in school about the Blitz and the texts were very clear in their condemnation of this and almost totally talked about the bombing we did, except for some missions. It's there, you just had to look harder for it. When missions and bombing of particular targets were talked about, they were always talking about how brave the men were and how much danger they were in. Nothing like control of what kids learn in formative years. I took every history class I could after leaving high school. I was starved for this information. Now, most of the textbooks are the work of the Texas school book commission who are insane. Kids are going to be very weird when these folks are done with them.

So, I really wanted to know what the Germans were saying. my grandmother was one of those children. Hearing stories like hers helps to make sense of our family's life and her legacy, especially since she couldn't often speak of what it was to grow up in Bavaria during that time and what horrors they encountered as a result of this war. She is dead now, after a life I scarcely, regrettably understand. Very sad not to be able to decipher this doc, and now regret not having learned German, despite the fact that it was spoken at home.
On the up side, if you turn on the CC autogen function, the phonetic subtitles are. full stop. hilarious.

It is a delight just to watch the kids having fun in those days. For children the war was just something their parents talk about as bad. To them it was just another thing happening in their daily lives and nothing could interfere with their daily games. I am just a young man (33 yrs old, but I remember that when I was a kid the only thing a care about every day was playing in the backyard with my friends, going skating or playing in a pond nearby. Not very different from the kids at that time.

there is a book that was written by the diaries of children through the ww2 but can't remember the title it was pretty cool to read what these kids thought. Like a German girl seeing the Jews being loaded at a train place and what she was being told about them and why they were leaving.

For the most part, they are now gone from the world. My parents and grandparents lived through the war and had their stories of what they experienced. It is good to know that these sorts of visual records remain, for as the sayings go, a picture is worth a thousand words.

where are the films of the Jewish children in Germany, Belgium, Poland, Amsterdam, France who were not fortunate enough to be evacuated? Some pictures have been retrieved, surely there must be some films remaining? I wish there were subtitles for the German commentary.

Im just wondering why you chose not to have either subtitles or voice-over translations for the German portions of this programme. I was very interested in the whole topic but had no idea what the Germans were saying. It detracted from the film, in my opinion.

This is The First Thumbs Down I've ever given on Timeline. As former viewers have repeatedly stated, the lack of English subtitles was just not acceptable given the ability to do so. It wouldn't have taken a lot of effort. At least Try next time, Timeline.

I feel it's disrespectful not to have the feelings and thoughts of the German speakers understood. There should be some kind of subtitles, or voice over narration, so I can understand what the Germans are trying to communicate to the listener.

Subtitles would be great. You also have a video or two where instead of Subtitles theres a narrator who talks over the german speaker. Thats doesn't work well either. I really do get alot out of this series. If only these small things can be fixed.

This could have been such a good documentary except that none of the German comments had an English translation or subtitles. So much valuable experience that was lost to the viewing audience.

It is unfortunate that I do not speak German and that there were no subtitles; I'm sure that what was said by the other side would have been most interesting. Amateurish. Alles ist KAPUT!

Timeline - take this down until you fix the lack of subtitles. I ended up fast forwarding thru the German parts because I dont understand German. What a wasted opportunity.

I added English subtitles for the German sections (with the help of a nice person on reddit) if someone wants to add the subtitles for the English sections that would be sweet

Subtitles would be nice, Timeline. Not all English speakers understand German and not all Germans understand English. This makes the documentary seriously flawed.

This would've rated a 10/10, but the lack of English subtitles drops my rating to 5/10. If Timeline ever goes back and adds subtitles, I'll give it a 10.
