It would only make sense, in order have acess to the courts or Spain he would have to be of noble birth. Not only that, to acess all the navigational charts at the School of Henry the Navigator he would have to marry or have privilege to those charts? We all know Columbus married a Portuguese woman, the story tells us that this woman allowed him access to all the charts because somehow she was a descendant of Henry the navigator. In my opinion and I've always thought this, Columbus is Portuguese there's just too many facts that back this up. Now one might ask themselves this question as well, how could a small country like Portugal keep its independence at a time when Spain was conquering everything in its sight? Maybe, there was some type of agreement made between Ferdinand, Isabella and Columbus to keep Portugal independent. It just does not make any sense that Spain would not conquer a small country like Portugal when it could easily do so. There could have been an arrangement between both monarchs of Portugal and Spain, Columbus could have been a mediator? Maybe Portugal gave Columbus the charts to navigate to the New World and then in return Spain agreed not to conquer Portugal? Not only that, Portugal has colonialized many continents as well.

Perhaps I have forgotten a few things at 70, but I distinctly remember being taught that Columbus was a Portuguese sailor that lived in Itlay, but because of wars couldn't obtain funding from the king for his voyage. He then turned to Spain and Queen Isabella.
Did I believe this story? Well, even in grade school I knew enough to disbelieve the part about her hocking her jewels to bestow money on this lowly sailor.
And being Native American, I am always leary of tales twice told. Though it is counterintuitive, the past is easier to mold than the future.
