He who joyfully marches to music rank and file
has already earned my contempt. He has been given a large brain by
mistake, since for him the spinal cord would surely suffice. This
disgrace to civilization should be done away with at once. Heroism at
command, senseless brutality, deplorable love-of-country stance and all
the loathsome nonsense that goes by the name of patriotism, how
violently I hate all this, how despicable and ignoble war is; I would
rather be torn to shreds than be part of so base an action! It is my
conviction that killing under the cloak of war is nothing but an act of
murder.

This war was won by numbers. The german tanks were superior, but you put just one or 2 tiger or panther tanks up against 20-40 Sherman's eventually they will be put down although they will prolly lose half or more of the shermans they came in attacking with. Its amazing how many died just to overwhelm the Germans. It was a meat grinder for the allied service members and equipment. That's just my opinion and is complete anecdotal but I'm sure people would agree even though my numbers could be off. Great documentary wish they would had cut the recap every 5- 10 mind though.

People likely see me comment this under many of these videos but it's because I am proud. My grandfather stormed Juno beach with the North Nova Scotia Highlanders on June 6th, 1944. He was a sapper. He blew up German tanks, bridges, whatever needed to be destroyed, he did it. He died in 2010 shortly before his beloved Bruins took the cup. I like to think they did it for him. He was a great man with a great sense of humor and very humble in his day to day life. Both of my great grandfathers also served during WWI, The Great War. Of course I never met them.

The audio mix is terrible in this episode. The bass is much too loud and the commentary is drowned by the music at times.
This episode is also based on obsolete research. For anyone interested in what actually happened from June 6 through 10, 1944 at Juno beach pick up Dr. Marc Miler's Stopping the Panzers: The Untold Story of D Day published in 2014 by the University of Kansas Press. It is based on the most up to date documents released from the British Archives at Kew, and the true story is very much different from what is portrayed here.

The germans had better gear, almost all the way alround. The only thing the Allies had going for them, was strength in numbers and the will to win for the good of the world.
Even though the history is written by the victors, and we all can agree on the fact that we are glad that the allied forces won - we can't deny the superiority of the german military in that time.
Had they not spread thin and started the war with the US and the USSR, then the history might have unfolded differently.

45: 17 time point notice how there are no crosses above individual graves in Normandy under Fr control. The Americans forbade the practice of crosses on German grave in France. What the are the Modern Germans going to do about it - the French can give them skeletons back if they want to bury them on their own land. TE Fidler NzL, son of an Rnzaf airman.
NB it looks too as if there are two to a grave to save work. let the Wehrmacht bury their own dead.

Wow! The Nazi's had 80 Tiger Tanks, along with 40 Panther tanks when they withdrew from Caen to defend the High ground south if the rubble in the City of Caen, They also had 72 88's to use as Anti Tank guns to make it a real mess. The Sherman Tanks were no match for either. The Canadians had 800 tanks and lost 400 of them when they attacked the Ridge that the Nazis occupied.

America owes every Canadian, that went to battle in a Sherman, reparation. I am certainly not surprised to see that the Sherman could be stop by a bush! The hedges probably put a dent in the armor of the Sherman. I would be surprised that any member of the crew of a Sherman survived a hit with a 50cal.

Apart from Omaha beach being a slaughterhouse, Juno was the next worst beach to invade as the German defenses were stiff and that resulted in almost 500 men KIA that morning.
When the landing crafts released the first few waves, the German MG42s just let loose and mowed down the poor boys.

reply

Must have been awful scary g in a Sherman crew. Many people put those tanks down as if we couldnt build a good tank, but it was because we had to use tanks that were shipped over by sea, and the Germans could build what they wanted and ship by train. Supplies like fuel were also harder to ship
reply

That was the plan but the Allies would get stuck on the beach front for about a month, Monty promise to break out in the first week of the landings but it would eventually take the bombing and destruction of the city of caen before a break out was possible one month later.

Would be interested in knowing why the Canadians were launching frontal attacks against the Germans fixed, defensive positions when the Allies had air superiority? Seems like WWI tactics which generally only produced massive casualties.
reply

I don't know this about the British tank platoons but every Canadian tank platoon had 1 or 2 Firefly Shermans with the long barrelled 17 pounder which made a huge difference in tangling with Tigers and Panthers.
reply

So their answer in mobile warfare was to attack a well defended entrenched position was to attack it head on with inferior equipment. Sounds like such a 19th Century thing to do.

Pitiful video! The music is so intrusive we cannot understand the dialogue! Did an adult review this video prior to release// This is terrible! Best of luck, but it appears you do not know what you are doing!
reply

After watching videos about The Great War, its shocking that we have the incredible privilege of listening to these doubly incredible men tell their stories. The fact that anyone survived is baffling to me.
reply

Not gonna lie. most I hear in the states is that the Canadian military is kind of a joke. but from everything Ive been learning in these videos is that our brothers to the north are straight beasts!
reply

Thx for this a Doco on the Canadian/British efforts on D. Day. They are Sadly Ignored by the American efforts.
Brave men Died from Every side!
They should all be Remembered forever.

reply

Sorry, but their idea was to basically use ww1 tactics and slowly advance towards apparently a really strong defensive position? Im no historian obviously, but damn that seems like a waste of life
