The Cold War: When nuclear weapons kept the entire world on the edge of M. A. D. Mutually Assured Destruction. As Russia, China and the USA flex their military muscles on the global stage today, M. A. D. World takes a close look at the last time we were threatened by the might of world superpowers: The Cold War. In this episode - As World War 2 draws to a close, 50 Nations sign up to a new organisation in the hope of bringing peace to the world. Some were enemies only weeks before but the United Nations is born. - A single bomb with the power of 20 000 tons of TNT flattens Hiroshima and creates a horrific burst of nuclear radiation. This terrible new weapon stuns the world and the nuclear age begins. - As part of an agreement signed by the victorious allies after World War 2, the Soviet Union occupies Eastern Europe. The West watches in helpless horror as soviet-controlled communist dictatorships are imposed in every country. - The USA tests its first atomic bomb since Nagasaki at Bikini Atoll. More tests follow. There is no doubt the USA is ready to use the atomic bomb again if necessary. - As an impenetrable border of barbed wire, land mines and watch towers divides Europe, people from Eastern Europe use desperate means to escape the Iron Curtain. They reveal stories of secret police, torture and execution in the soviet occupied territories. - Greece is the battleground for the first proxy war of the Cold War as communist rebels supported by Eastern Bloc neighbours rise up and the USA delivers money and arms to the Greek government. - Chinese communist rebels flood across the country and defeat the US-supported Imperial government to create a second major communist power

dropping on japan, was more to do with warning to j stalin not to invade japan from the north, than stopping the war, japan had already surrendered befor it was dropped, and even then it may have just been a psy op, the fact that people are waking around filming days later in the ground zero area, the film stock should have useless, due to radiation, and then only a few short years later both cities are up and running, maybe it was just a fire bombing the same as the rest of japan.

Man is weak and unable to govern themselves. We create CO2 just by breathing. There is another lesson on this in the past when organisms created so much oxygen they smothered themselves, not just once but over and over again. We will smother ourselves, over and over again. The first thig we'll do when the oil runs out is build fires: CO2 again.
How many times have we done this? Has it happened before? Sorry, left field tangent. WE MAKE CO2. That's what we do.

5: 45. dude is a imbasol and if we (USA) invaded Japan there would have been twice the casualties and alot more Americans. If I could of saved all those Americans lives I would of done the same exact thing. JUT SAVING THE LIFE of 1 american I would of dropped it. The Pearl Harbor sneak attack meant a fight to the death. NOthing but unconditional surrender. They brought it upon themselves. There kamikaze meant Japan fought to die. Americans fought on to Live!

Very truncated, describing events, but absent of any context.
Here is the truth that the west needs to understand.
Ideologically, communism is about equality.
Ideologically, capitalism is about inequality.
One benefits the poorest 50%. But hurts the richest 50%.
One benefits the richest 50%. But hurts the poorest 50%.
It should be quite obvious to the citizen, which regime they live under.

Two points in history create the Cold War. (i) the atomic bomb and (ii) Communism says the narrator at 10'08. Arguably he should have said (a) the atomic bomb and (b) rampant capitalism led by the USA which wanted to be the UNRIVALLED power in the world by creating and controlling the international rules of the new world order via the Bretton Woods agreement.

Why should the Soviets let Western media in or withdraw the troops from Eastern European countries, our government wouldn't let there media in or withdraw our troops from Western and Central Europe, actually we are still all over Europe. We have over 1, 000 foreign military bases, plus our mobile bases, aircraft carriers all over the planet.

The problem is the people signing up for the ones whose doing all the talking and never shooting anyone themselves on the Frontline. Start putting all theses talkers on the Frontline and wars will be no more. I guess they payva pretty good penny to sucker people in to do all their dirty work. While they hide in bunkers

Hindsight is always 20/20. So tired of the argument against the use of the bomb as if all the facts were laid out clearly for easy evaluation. Five times as many Chinese civilians were ruthlessly slaughtered by the Japanese, not to mention those who they murdered on so many other Pacific islands. Just stop it.

This was a war crime. Bomb high ranking military and government institutions. Not kill civilians who had no choice whether or not there country should be in war. Innocent people died for what was a test for the Americans and the evil empire got away with it. As they do everything else.

and what was that - new structure of peace - worth-?
nothing.
it was broken even before the ink was dry on the document.
and nothing has changed to this day.
treaties were signed.
promises were made.
and nothing was, is and will be kept.

reply

I think more people would have died on both sides if the A-bomb wasn t dropped on Japan, The Japanese were not even considering surrender until they saw the power and devastation that one bomb can do, the emperor probably feared for his own life.

We have to to recall that these tests were sometimes twice the size expected because we didn't understand the interactions of one element with another. (edit) these guys were NOT scientists but little boys blowing up stuff in our backyard!

The Tsar Bomba was the worst and first of it's kind, of course being of hydrogen instead of atomic and there's no telling how it'll be like today, if the inventors of nuclear weapons saw how technologically advanced the weaponry is now.
