Pearl Harbor Movie Everything Michael Bay Got Wrong

Pearl Harbor Movie Everything Michael Bay Got Wrong

video description

Rating: 4.5; Vote: 2
On December 7, 1941, a military strike by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service hit the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. In 2001, the film 'Pearl Harbor' by Michael Bay was released. The drama follows American friends Rafe McCawley (played by Ben Affleck) and Danny Walker (played by Josh Hartnett) as they enter World War II as pilots. Though roughly based on real events, the movie is full of historical inaccuracies. Issues like segregation, the surprise attack, and many other glaring errors have caused many historians to dismiss the film as wildly off base.

I wondered why U. S. Navy nurses would be conducting U. S. Army physicals. The Army had its own medical personnel and medical facilities. My dad trained in 1940 to be a medic at a U. S. Army hospital, and my mother was an Army nurse. Another historical inaccuracy involves the death of one of the nurses. No nursesArmy or Navywere killed at Pearl Harbor so when Betty gets hit, it's purely for dramatic effect. Also, when Danny goes to tell Evelyn about Rafe's death, the whole scene of Danny getting out of the car in full uniform as if he was delivering the news to a widow seems a little ridiculous. Evelyn and Rafe weren't even engaged and unless Rafe listed Danny as his next-of-kin, Danny wouldn't have received the telegram from the RAF. It would have been sent to Rafe's parents and they, in turn, might have contacted Danny. There are so many things in this movie that make me go ugh. The whole thing is a soap opera that just happens to be set during the attack on Pearl Harbor. I think Bay was going for the same teenage girl market that put Titanic on top. Apparently, he succeeded, even though he did a disservice to history and the generation who lived through it.

okay, I'd like to note something, i abhor the Bay version and love the og Pearl harbor movie. but some of the things you complain about are just typical problems with shooting a WW2 movie, especially one with ships in it. first off, using modern ships in place of old ones is nothing new, movies have been doing that for ages, going after that is like going after an autistic child for being autistic (note, i have Aspergers so leave me alone. secondly, going after bay for using the Missouri in place for an actual World War 2 ship is just childish, yes it wasn't built at that time, but would you really prefer they ONLY use modern ships? give the guy some credit, at least he got something near accurate. thirdly, I hardly believe it's needed to go after the movie for only showing women being nurses and secretaries. finally, I would like to state that watching the movie in it's entirety is a waste of time, and it would be better of watching it's older version titled TORA TORA TORA

nice video but who said the movie had to be accurate? it is called a movie, for accuracy, you watch something called a documentary. Also, you said they were expecting the attacks, but that is clearly false. I mean, the official story is that they all got a surprise attack, but I believe they just allow for the Japanese to attack since that would make a good excuse to enter the war, just like the 9/11 was just an excuse to start wars everywhere without any good reason. but hey, you say the official story is wrong and the attacks were expected, even when the President says was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan.

I thought of one more thing. The movie makes it look as if the Doolittle Raid happened a couple of weeks later. It happened in April, 1942. Evelyn would have been more than 6 months pregnant by then, but there's not a hint of a baby bump in the scene when Rafe comes back with Danny's body. In reality, a young woman in her position in 1941 wouldn't have wanted to be unwed and pregnant which makes it totally unrealistic that she didn't tell Danny so they could marry before he left.

The Eagle Squadron (yanks flying with the RAF prior to ww2) was actually a thing. Leaving out female factory workers or WASP is not wrong; it's just off-topic, snowflake. Crop dusting in general was done well before ww2 so that is plausible, just not with that plane (the Stearman Model 75 was introduced when the main characters would have been about 12 years old.

Another little thing is that the wooden tool put on the torpedoes by the Japanese would get detached from the torpedo after it hits the water. One sceen showing a torpedo in action from behind depicts the wooden part staying attached to the torpedo while it travels and till it hits a ship.

Remember when Michael Bay sent a bunch of oil drillers to space instead of the already available trained astronauts to make an asteroid go boom? That should already give people an idea that Bay isn't going for realism in his films. he just wants to see things go BOOM

If you wanna see a good Pearl Harbor SCENE from the Arizonas prospective then watch midway 2019, But strangely midway 2019 gets bad reviews because of to much action but if you are watching a war movie about a true story then there should be tons of action.

Though there were a plethora of errors, both historical and military, made by Michael Bay, I would suggest the writer of this video do a bit of research before decrying those errors. He was every bit as incorrect, if not more, as Michael Bay was.

During World War II, there were American pilots who flew in England. The Eagle Squdron were made up of American volunteers. So it is possible that Afflecks character, was indeed a volunteer. Same thing in China the-The Flying Tigers.

To me, the most glaring inaccuracy is the inclusion of Spruance and Kidd-class destroyers, most of which were not produced until 25 years after the attack. There should have been Clemson and Wickes-class Destroyers in their place.

Either someone's smoking de crack, or I have completely missed this nuclear submarine.
As a person who has a field day picking apart Hollywood's military vehicle errors, I'd like to see these E2 Hawkeyes and Nuclear subs.

Michael Bay is like Nicky Minaj.
Hear me out, both could certainly create much better and much more interesting art but neither found a reason to make themselves do it so they don't. Customer's choice.

Terrible movie! Tora, Tora, Tora is by far, in every way, the better movie! This movie was a love story, with Pearl Harbor as a special effect. No depth or accuracy. A good example of poor story telling!

You where worng about American pilots fighting for other countrys many US PILOTS where flying with the Chinese and getting piad twice as much fighting Japanese planes. #flyingtigers
reply

Husband's grandfather was on base for the attack. The list of inaccuracies is ridiculous.
Btw, he was the unnamed soldier who punched out the officer to free the firearms.

reply

Yes you forgot about the fact that Japanese pilots didn't attack the hospitals because they were not their strategic targets. It was made only for dramatic purposes.
reply

The fact how In the movie it shows them flying p40s and shooting down zeros when in reality the Americans never got a chance to get any planes in the air during the attack
