Medieval Europe had no shortages of plagues, super deadly disease outbreaks that could wipe out a chunk of the population without much effort. But none of them were quite as fun as the bizarre case of Frau Troffea and the dancing plague that had upwards of 400 people compulsively dancing in the streets, some even to their deaths. Today, were going to examine the Plague that Made People Dance Themselves to Death

St. Vitus dance still happens. it is a neurologically caused involuntary movement. Those with Huntingtons disease demonstrate the repetitive dance movement, it is distinctive. Certain BRAIN infections affecting those same brain areas cause those same choreas or dance like movements. And as said, some in this 1500s example would have been simply hysterically affected.

The one disease I'm most horrified of catching is Naegleria Fowleri, better known as the brain-eating amoeba. I know this is an amoeba, but what makes me so horrified of it is that doctors wouldn't be able to identify it until I'm dead.

lmfao i wouldve started violently punching everyone knocking people out punching them until they couldnt be punched anymore. lets see how psychologically challenging it is when they wake up to stop dancing.
reply

I think it was sum sorta parasite, certain parasites can manipulate the way people think and behave. I can't see mass hysteria making people dance themselves to death, there musta been a reason for this.

Choreomania by Florence + the Machine is the only right answer to what song you should listen to when you have dancing mania. The whole Dance Fever album would be a good soundtrack, actually

My question is what kind of Hallucinogenics was in there drinking water cause thats the only scientific explanation for this I can think of
reply

I think they wanted the last moments of their lives to be happy. which actually makes a lot of sense if you know you're going to die.
reply

Those poor people doing that! Never, ever knowing that they had caught something that affected them neurologically. How bizzare.
reply

Just dance taken too far.
Also, my dancing plague jam would be hair leg miku spinning to I was 5 and he was six

Human poisoning due to the consumption of rye bread made from ergot - infected grain was common in Europe in the Middle ages.

Its aah-kin, not ach-in. The lions were licking the crunchy outside to get to the chewy centre. Just like a tootsie roll!

I honestly still wouldn't rule out demon possession. Though it seems unlikely if the priests' prayers didn't do anything.
reply

I can't with the techno beat in the background.
I can't but imagine how the whole town just started a massive rave

The funniest part for me is that they brought in musicians to cure people and that just made more people join in
