The True Story Behind 'Escape From Dannemora'

The True Story Behind 'Escape From Dannemora'

The true story behind Escape at Dannemora - including the brutal histories of escapees Richard Matt and David Sweat - is much darker than the typical prison TV show. How did two inmates break out of a maximum-security prison and evade capture for close to a month? For starters, several prison guards were in on the plot to help the men escape. Instead of confiscating contraband from the inmates, guards actually smuggled in art supplies and hacksaws hidden in raw meat for the prisoners. The lack of security allowed Sweat to break out of his cell 85 times without anyone noticing. As he later told police, Shawshank aint got sht on me

This is the number one argument in favor of capital punishment. These two men shouldve been put to death within a week of their trials. Instead of that they got three square meals a day and a room paid by the taxpayers of New York State. And when they escaped it cost New York State 23 1/2 million dollars. All first-degree murderers without exception should get the death penalty in all 50 states. Just think of the money that would be saved by taxpayers.
These people gave up their right to be alive when they killed somebody in cold blood. Its as simple as that. And the fact that Mark David Chapman is still alive 40 years after assassinating John Lennon in cold blood makes me vomit. He shouldve been put to death 39 1/2 years ago. Like the two people in this video he gets a room and three square meals a day courtesy of the taxpayers of the state of New York.
Capital punishment is the only issue in which I am a conservative. Otherwise I am a liberal.

I actually lived 10mins away from where they were found. I remember going shopping and seeing a whole bunch of police cars speeding by and also having be vehicles stopped and searched. People constantly say things about how the town celebrated when they were taking back into custody. I dont think we see killers like that every day and I think the police deserved a celebration. We lived in fear while these two were running around. I heard they shot campers and stuff. So when one was shot and killed and the other taken into custody we were ready to celebrate. We have the right to respect police officers for protecting us. They might not catch every single criminal but atleast they caught the most dangerous ones at the time.

The beauty of Shawshank was. ..
1) Andy was innocent so it was rightfully due retribution
2) it took him over 20 years to set up his escape
3) Andy took millions of $ with him that was, as stated in the movie, compensation for years of being wrongfully incarcerated
4) the taunting Andy left behind was a middle finger/ karma delivery to those who were more crooked than half the inmates themeselves.
So no, there's no comparison whatsoever with Shawshank except it involved crawling through a hole in their cell and then through a pipe/drain. That's where act similarities end.

I am not sure if this is correct, but in Escape at Dannemora, (mini series on Showtime) Sweat and Matt traveled 20 miles in three weeks together. However, after they split up, Sweat covered 18 miles in two days. The Canadian border was perhaps 25 miles from the prison. If Sweat would have split up with Matt earlier in their escape, he would have easily made it to Canada. Matt's daughter stated that she believed the pair split up because her dad found alcohol in one of the cabins they broke into. She stated that alcohol brought out the worst in her father.

I have done the Alcatraz swim 22 times you would have to know the tides and have been an experienced open water swimmer to escape, after one swim we ran to Sausalito the bay looks a washing machine from the golden gate an hour earlier when the swim started the bay was flat calm. Jack Lalanne said it is the most treacherous body of water in the world if you don't know the tides and currents and they close the shipping lanes for the swim

Andy Dufrane was innocent and he got away. All right in the world.
These other dudes were criminals and got caught, all right in the world.
Dannemora is a real prison with real criminals, all that's wrong in our world.
Shawshank is fictitious with fictional characters also what's wrong in the world.
Hollyweird and coastal Cabals are what's harmful.
Billy the Kid did kill himself!

Joyce Mitchell and the idiot prison guard should have to pay back all 23 million dollars to the state of New York. I live in upstate New York. After their initial plan fell through and they went to plan B they had no idea how rough the terrain of upstate New York can be. The mosquitos black flies and ticks ate them alive.

What they don't tell people is, that there was an uptick in voilent attacks in that prison, and the prison superintendent had requested agency officials in Albany for authorization for it to be lockdown and completely searched which were denied, weeks prior to that escape.

It was not stated in the video, but actually happened, that Gov. Andrew Cuomo (yes, THAT Andrew Cuomo) led a group of reporters through the escape pathway behind the cells before it could be forensically processed, despite the pleas of law enforcement on the scene.

One thing that was not mentioned in the video was that the day after the breakout Gov. Andrew Cuomo led reporters through the path of the breakout, ignoring pleas from law enforcement, prior to it being forensically scanned and possibly destroying evidence.

Omg I usually dont see much video footage from upstate by in the video, nice to actually watch something familiar. I remember the entire talk about the death of the officer killed by Sweat, didnt except much till the break. That was intense in real life.

Thanks for the video! I noticed there are some details the movie gets right that the TV show didn't and vice versa. (New York Prison Break the Seduction of Joyce Mitchell [2017] vs Escape at Dannemora [2018] Both are worth a watch in my opinion.

I live just across the Lake from Dannemora, here in Vermont. Definitely was an interesting time. state police and local sheriff were constantly driving by, even down the small back roads. updates were on the news all the time

Please don't compare this to Shawshank redemption. I don't remember Andy dufrain having an inmate accomplis and 3 prison guards 2 saws 6 blades screwdrivers drill bits and burger meat to escape. And he didn't get caught either
reply

You can't just say it's the real life Sahwshank when it had absolutely NOTHING to do with that movie or story which were written something like 50 years before the events of this video
Talk about click bait garbage

I'm from Broome County where the officer was killed. Sweat killed him very brutally, because he caught Sweat trying to rob a fireworks store. They probably should have killed him too, like they did his escape partner.

Not even close. Shawshank kills.

23+ million dollars would have been saved if they just swung from a rope. I'm sick and tired of all these bleeding heart's trying to abolish the death penalty, it should be mandatory and the process expedited.

Today, the employees at Dannemora have to carry clear plastic bags and go through scanners. They call the clear bags Tilly Bags. She's free now, however, I don't think she is too welcome back at Dannemora.

Spending so much money on criminals, they should have just gotten the death sentence. When did the government spent money on me (I mean average people) they only take from me.
