On January 28, 1986, tragedy struck the Space Shuttle Challenger when it broke apart 73 seconds into the flight, killing all seven crew members onboard. In a bizarre turn of events, the disastrous flight almost included one of Sesame Street's most beloved characters, Big Bird.

It would have been horrifying if Big Bird was on board during the shuttle disaster.
I feel terrible for the lives lost that day, but I also imagine that if Big Bird was on board while they were filming an episode of Sesame Street on the shuttle. oof.

Every one of these people are still alive. Most of them did not even change their names. Most are professors at universities. That rocket was empty but it accidentally blew up so they had to come up with a cover story that they died. NASA is a sham

my 5th grade teacher told me about back when he was in New Hampshire, at the school of this social studies teacher, the whole class was watching this when it happened. it took about 30 or so seconds for them to realize that the shuttle exploded

Imagine how many children, all over the world, would have been traumatized from seeing Big Bird, THE ACTUAL BIG BIRD actually blow up on live television.
I could never imagine how big that affect would be.

reply

They arent dead. Two literally are living as their identical twins and the rest didnt even bother to fully change their names. Just dropped the first name or father name. Look into it
reply

big bird should've stayed on because then we would've gotten some fried chicken
but nobody cares about the teacher though, she wanted to go to teach children about space in space

reply

The fact that a teacher died in that. Thats just. awful. I just. I cant even hear it. Its so sad, that a woman shaping our future had to die so horribly. I feel so awful.
reply

Yeah, screw those other brave souls and the innocent teacher trying to expand our horizon and teach kids about astronomy, at least big bird survived, am I right?
reply

If Big Bird was actually onboard, imagine all those bright yellow feathers slowly falling from the sky after the explosion, how ridiculous it would have looked.
reply

If you think about it there is an alternative dimension where Big Bird fit into the rocket and blew up and a dimension where he made it into to space

My friend is related to Big Bird, I'm very happy for Caroll not joining, and I am very sorry for the people involved with the challenger crew.

Wonder if they would have made his death cannon on the show, as a way to help kids understand death and tragedy. Like the Mr. Hopper episode.
reply

Imagine how that very special PUNKY BREWSTER about the aftermath of the explosion would have turned out had they gone through with it!
reply

If this happened the world would have been in this awkward state between outwardly mourning and internally laughing their asses off
reply

One thought comes to mind. I understand that the Big Bird costume is very awkward. Just imagine getting it to work in zero gravity.
reply

Why was everyone so sad? I would've just been like: Oh shit that sucks, but I didn't know 'em so. [casually goes back to work]
reply

That would have been tragic. Okay, maybe not as tragic as if we had lost Mr. Snuffleupagus, but tragic nonetheless.
reply

now that mr. spinney is no longer with us, I can't help but be grateful we had 30+ more years with the man.
