Portrayals during the 16th century were normally shown as serious. It would be highly unusual for any sign of happy emotion to be shown on Catherines face. It can be presumed that a deep sadness permeated their situation, however unlike the common masses this family did have access to food, fine clothing and a certain status - albeit a reflection of mans inhumanity to man and one of cruel ignorance.
A sad cautionary tale indeed; since it spawned a fairy tale centered on the power of true love, Id like to think there was an abiding love between Petrus and Catherine that still reverberates in a tale as old as time. The fact that a core message of the story is about seeing deeper than surface appearances to find the hearts desire lends credence to the idea that they really did achieve a measure of happily ever afterthat and the fact they had seven children and that they stayed together for life. Had she truly found her situation intolerable, she could have appealed the marriage on the basis of it being unnatural, bestial even, and it would have been quite normal for such a union to be sundered through her retreat to a convent or other situation. Indeed, a forced union likely done for the curiosity and amusement of a Queen (whos own story was horrendous) became the foundation of an object lesson that still enchants. Id like to think that in the young Catherines eyes her beast was a truly handsome and desirable man.

I think the hate in Catarines eyes is not of her husband but what they do to her and her husband. I dont think he is ugly either. Just think about those really soft hairs. Its like cuddling a very soft teddybear. I think she must have loved that side. Also, without reputation and beauty to worry about (as it wouldnt change whatever they did. You can focus on eachother. A man treated the way he was treated will surely not treat his wife the same? If he was kind, gentle, loyal and smart. That was better than 95% of all men that time.
Also dont forget it could be very cold in the night but they obviously wouldnt even mind laying in a tent in the snow. I think apart from the fact we see it as odd, it actually wouldve been a big improvement of the human race. Especially with all the gas prices now

People don't realize that even today the Royals and other elites truly see people differently than the rest of us. If they act empathetic or normal it is just a veneer. You should read some of the horrible things written even by the late Prince Philip (Elizabeth II's husband. He wished he could be reincarnated as a deadly virus to wipe out half of the world's population because there are too many of us (which by the way is not true -the world population is actually declining. Royals are raised into a different world and it is sick how people still worship them.

The most advanced ancient royal elite super superior dominate civilized nations. Made sure all their loyal subjects were able to live and die to the highest standards of quality that were available during that time and they can do this without anyone overstepping their boundaries. Because the end result of such a lifestyle. Is constant consisting physical, mental, financial and spiritual progress occurring within each and every moment of life. That Level of care to oneself and others results in a truly positive force that is self perpetuating continuously. S. R. F.

While we are talking about how cruel and stereotypical the society was back then, we should note that our human society hasn't changed much. People still judge others by stereotypes, people are still mocked for their medical conditions and even if a person is wearing their cultural dress or any outfit he/she found comfortable is ridiculed by others. Unfortunately, our society still has many cruel elements which promote lack of respect for others.

wow people were even more cruel back then. I don't know if that to do with the fact that people were even more ignorant back then even with education people were awful. To treat someone with a condition like they were an animal and to give their children away as pets that's sick. Royals back then were sick and twisted people that guy probably had more class and heart than any of the people that were treating him horribly.

Wow I never knew this tragic story. I love Disney's Beauty and the Beast but I thought it was a made-up fairytale. I always wonder why people are so quick to judge, hate, and mistreat others just because they are different or don't understand their circumstances. It is so tragic. I hope this poor family found peace.

No way to tell but the look in both of their eyes could have been a result of their entrapment at court. Also, can you imagine your children being pulled from your home never to be seen again. There's a lot of trauma going on in their lives; I think we all would have that look in our eyes too if this was our trapped life.

He didn't have a condition,
He was a part of a race of proto-humans, who had civilization, history, culture all of their own.
And we killed them off, buried their past, and claimed they never existed.
Those who still carry the genes, we say it's a birth defect, a fluke.
Sad. Very sad.

The look on her face doesn't mean she was not in love with him. It could have been from them being treated like animals and her kids being taken from her. She couldn't protect her kids and husband from being gocked at. They were slaves being past around. All that can make you depressed.

Disney didn't change the ending of the story, the tale was a happy one already. And i think the first version came from Germany or france (there is no consensus, there. We think we're savages, and yet we changed a lot in100 years. Let's hope we don't devolve. Again.

Those of African ancestry were thought to be less than human, savages and animals by those of European descent. I wonder why those of European ancestry so often feel this way about those who do not look like them?

This is really sad. Beauty and the Beast has always been my favorite fairytale. Its absolutely horrendous that they did this to them and I cant imagine how difficult it must have been for all of them. So tragic

There's never a fairy tale ending. For example: in the original little mermaid story the prince actually married another woman and Ariel was so heartbroken that she killed herself

Nephilim/Rephaim bloodline, probably. The lion-headed men of Gad in 1 Chronicles chapter 8 spring to mind.
Also Esau was hairy and Jacob was not. Really is a tale as old as time.

Well: I suppose that you could call a skin condition like hypertrichosis a curse, couldn't you? And IF someone had had a cure, THEN the curse could have been broken!

Is this related to the Serpent Queen tv series I have been watching? Viewers enlighten me. If so, why was this intrigue not entwined with the plot of the series?

How come people don't understand it was the 1500s. Women didn't have as freedom as now. Even if Catherine wanted, she couldn't just divorce him!

I can't believe they shipped their children off as gifts. Petrus got luckish. I can't see that happening four more times for their children.

Ask yourself why you are questioning whether or not she loved him. Just by asking, you are assuming that he was possibly not human.
