What Really Happened Behind the Scenes on Pimp My Ride

Yo dawg, this may be painful to hear, but a lot of the Pimp My Ride episodes were actually a TV disaster. Of course, the show gave the audience many gifts, like rapper Xzibit memes that just keep giving. And while fans will treasure the show forever, Pimp My Ride car fails are alarmingly common. Many contestants still regard the auto body shop from Seasons One to Four, West Coast Customs, as garbage reality TV people who aren't the real deal

Having a tow truck on retention is WAY more expensive than just dropping a new driveline in almost all old junk vehicles you really cant make good decisions by committee. Its like 1-3 thousand dollars done in-house for the motor and transmission and I could do both in 8-16 hours depending on the vehicle unless it needed to go out for machine work but at that point just get a rebuild with a warranty and the cost still is cheaper than the tow truck and I can do it in 6 hours now.

The problem was many of the rides were utterly worthless to begin with. Nobody wants to see a makeover of a 1986 Camry or a 1991 Honda Civic. The bodywork was questionable. In one episode they found a fist sized hole in the roof in a Chevy Suburban. Rather than removing the old skin and replacing it with a new one, they filled the hole with bondo. Its was one of the most sickening things I have ever seen.

I liked watching that show, inspite of all the nonsense they put in these cars and the arrogant shopowners. I think the stupiest idea was going to Berlin and open a branch shop. This had to go wrong if you dont know the market! I sometimes walked past that building in Berlin and think of pimp my ride, pop my beer and mumble to myself: idiots

It was always clear as day that everything about those cars was just done for TV. It was so obvious that some of those features were just useless or totally non functional. This doesn't come as a surprise at all. Always assumed that only Americans can believe this to be true. Don't get me wrong, it all looked cool but was so obviously fake.

Uneducated people will always be uneducated. Thugs will always be thugs. Thugs are naturally uneducated and even if they have a show, they will act thuggish and be illiterate to the laws and regulations. Not surprised. What do you expect from people that use words like pimp and have tattoos.
reply

No sources cited for any of these claims. Not saying they're all untrue but saying all these things without including sources is just as bad as all the claims about how 'fake' this show was. Ironic. I don't doubt any of these but also can't take it 100% as factual either.

What I am getting out of this is that they actually modified contestants personal cars! That's crazy. I would have sworn the producers got cars and hired actors who pretended to own them. Seems so much easier that way, mechanically as well as legally.

Man, I used to like this show a lot. Didn't know it was so messed up. That been said, I always found it shady how they stuck PS3 or X360s inside those cramped spaces when YLOD and RROD was such a big thing back then, they were a fire hazard

I remember Pimp my Ride, I thought it was a dumb show, just like all the other programs on MTV. Its one thing to have over the top content and get some good laughs, but it looks like it was at other peoples expense and thats not cool.
reply

Even at 17 years old, I NEVER understood why anybody would ever let somebody destroy their car like this. Always despised this show, and was never dumb enough to watch it. Same with Orange County Choppers and West Coast Choppers.

I'm from the UK, ironically the host of Pimp my ride UK is currently under investigation after allegations were made against him. I guess being a sleaze bag was kind of required to be on this show wherever it was.

Disgusting show on MTV - FAKEST PLATFORM OF ALL TIME(THEY HAD NOTHING, BUT A RANDOM INTERVIEWS OF CELEBRITIES, TO HOOK THEM INTO. - THAT'S ALL THEY got, and HAD.

Only 12 years for murdering his wife? I could have sworn pimp my ride was earlier like 2002ish when it first came out, but imagine getting a piece of shit that looks good on the outside.
reply

You missed a crucial detail, no one had their actual car modified, their cars were destroyed on camera and later given a similar model. A lot of times not even the same make or model.

I honestly always thought it's insane to drive around with a kitchen or hair studio in your trunk. The cars with a nice sound system and game consoles were more practical.

I enjoyed watching that show, just for the fact that I'm a car guy and I love seeing the goofy they would do. Would have been 10x better to just give them a cheap new car.
reply

I can't imagine anyone ever thought this was somehow real. Yea I watched some episodes, like I watched show wrestling at the time, with a cringe pillow at hand.

Seems like a tale about the dangers of illegal immigration. You will be exploited in every way imaginable. Which is fair, you exploit us, we exploit you.
