Behind The Scenes Of Nirvana's Timeless 'MTV Unplugged' Performance

Nirvanas MTV Unplugged in New York was never meant to be a big deal. It was a lark, an afterthought, something recorded in roughly an hour that the band didnt plan to release. It was ultimately Nirvanas final album, giving fans one of the most unbelievable Kurt Cobain performances, as well as a strange foreshadowing of Cobains passing. In hindsight, the show mirrors Cobains life, one that was complicated by mental health issues and substance dependency. The performance, recorded on November 18, 1993, has been called personal and raw, but its just Nirvana doing what they do best

. it was supposed to be a disaster. (Grohl)
Yeah man, the stars were aligned just right to make this a terrible recording - but something magical happened instead, which is why so many of us have gravitated to it for so many years. It's not only because of the timeframe when it was recorded, it's not only because of the obstacles they had to overcome. the show itself just gelled in a way no one (least of all Grohl) expected.
I adhere to the theory that Kurt took his own life because he didn't see this performance the way we did. He didn't feel any hope. He saw his band breaking apart, he felt like a failure, and those things - combined hugely with his addiction and relationship issues - were all just too much.
RIP, Kurt. We all wish you'd had the help you needed to hold on for one more day.

As a musician who used to play in rock and metal bands, I always found that attitude shared by the majority of my colleagues really strange. That an acoustic set is somehow wrong or weird, or not going to be enjoyed. It's performance heaven to me, the opportunity to really show off what you've written. A well written song should sound good on a well made acoustic guitar. Master of puppets probably won't tbf, but then you just find a way to make it work.
I honestly think MTV unplugged provided some of the best versions of the featured artists works. They're so raw and real. Nothing to hide behind

Nirvana MTV Unplugged is a great story, but I had to look past the cheesey voice-over & slick music (and unfunny joke attempts. They only take away from this historical performance: a simpler and less performative approach would do this topic better justice imo. Some of the narration is decent, with info not on other docus, but this guy sounds a little stiff. Loosen-up, I say! Take it easy. Show us some rawness that made us love Cobain as much as we do. Btw, love the probably the kindest way anyone's told someone to f___ off line. And Nirvana's performance is by far my favorite in the Unplugged series.

The Unplugged show is one of my favorite shows. Where did you sleep last night will always be a favorite song of mine. Kurt sings it so well, and it sounds haunting. but really, every song they did was incredible. the songs were moving, and really resonate with people, today as much as they did back then. there's a slightly melancholy atmosphere to the Unplugged performances Nirvana did. the way the set is designed, the calmness in the room as Kurt is singing. this show was perfect, and I enjoy watching it.

A once in a generation album. Was a key inspiration on me to pick up my dad's old acoustic guitar and begin trying to teach myself to play. And I'm sure that's the case for many many others. I'd never picked up on the Funeral design until watching this, but it certainly adds to the whole performance, and is also quite eerie considering the events that ensued not long after the show was recorded.
A true masterpiece

One weird thing most people miss: That Martin is right handed and, as a lefty, he has it flipped upside down. You can tell by the pick guard being on top.
It appears to be re-strung in the left-handed configuration, which is crazy because you'd have to flip the nut to do that. He must have just really loved that guitar.

Kurt got more than benzodiazapines. He was dope sick and unsuccessfully tried to get his normal (crappy black tar) H from seattle. didn't work out. his crew was able. to go into the hood of NYC and get him some china white H just in time before the show. True story

have you done the alice in chains mtv unplugged? excellent session. i believe layne was sick as well as he looks like death from heroin on stage. i heard he was so messed up he kept fading out. he wore his sunglasses on stage to hide his eyes.

Thanks for sharing. I remember watching that episode around the time it originally aired and was impressed. Great set and my favorite MTV Unplugged Episode. Shawn R, Mo-Mutt Music/Sacred & Secular (and longtime Nirvana fan)

To be fair, most 90s MTV unplugged played songs were historical. Alice In Chains MTV will never be forgotten, Lives All Over you, puddle of mudd wasnt on mtv but their blurry on sessionsaol was also insanely good. STP etc

lol every Nirvana fan knows that Kurt didn't really respect Eddie Vedder or like his music. Why would MTV think Eddie was going to come on stage? MTV's a bit out of touch with their artists, methinks.

I rlly enjoyed the slower paced version of about a girl that they did. I also very much enjoyed their David Bowie cover of the man who sold the world. They very much owned that song
