What If You Drilled a Hole Through Earth?

You know what might be the best way to travel to the other side of the world? By drilling your way right through the planet. Imagine going from Argentina to China in less than an hour. This would be the journey of a lifetime, if you don't mind riding through molten rock and crushing pressure. What would you see along the way? How long would this journey through Earth take? And how would a gravity train keep you alive? The heat is on, and you're under all sorts of pressure. How deep is the deepest hole drilled in the Earth?

Another thing about that 42 minute travel time: it remains the same no matter where the ends of your tunnel are. You don't have to drill it through the center; you will travel a shorter distance but at a reduced speed. Let's say you start at Chicago and end in London. As long as there is no friction or air resistance, the time is still 42 minutes. This is because your direction of travel is -diagonal- (or tangential if you prefer) to the Earth's center of gravity, so you accelerate downward more slowly. Then as you pass the midpoint and begin to decelerate toward the surface, you do so more slowly as well, so you come to the surface in the same amount of time as through the center, travelling at a lower velocity. The shallower the tunnel, the slower the velocity and shorter the distance - always resulting in a 42 minute trip.

I believe that our 'gravity train' would start SHM about the centre, The moment we hit centre of earth,
As the g=0 there and the vehicle is accelerated merely by gravity.
Additionally, we'd rise to some height towards the other part due to the existing velocity we would have but stop and accelerate backwards soon,
Assuming no damping forces which would stop us (like air resistance in simple pendulumn, this would keep happening forever.
As such, we'll not be able to reach the other side until we have a heat and pressure proof solid engine in that train

Man, its not possible. Gravity always pulls from the centre of the planet. So you would propel really really fast until u reach the core, then start slowing down, because then the gravity from the core again starts to pull u towards it. Dude, this gravity train thingy is not possible, not even hypothetically or theoretically. Who knows, if u can't provide large amounts of acceleration, u may even end up getting stuck at the centre of the earth until eternity.

Once you go halfway, isn't that as far as you could go? Because at some point wouldn't you be flying up out of a hole in China? If that's not true, you'd be telling someone in China that if they were to jump in the hole on their they couldn't fall in at all and that everything on their side of the world that things fly up out of holes rather than fall in them.

It's impossible to drill through the earth, because you would get to 12km deep and reach hell like they did with the kola borehole and people would be too scared because of the chilling screams of tortured souls that come from there.
Hell is real which means everything we know about the earth that's been taught to us has been a lie.

Assuming you wouldn't incinerate or get crushed I always hypothesized in my own mind that you would just get stuck in the center where the equilibrium of gravity is. So you would have to have some kind of propulsion to overcome gravity on the other side.
(I'm making this comment before seeing the video)

The pressure alone would kill us we haven't made anything capable of going that far. Also when I clicked on this video I wanted to know what the damages would be for the rest of us because I can imagining doing that like you said super volcanos getting set off what point being rich if you end the world

What if the hole we just make for this video make something unusual? (Like, will there be catastrophic phenomena? / will it make living on the planet earth nightmare)
Will be cool if we can know about this fact too.

How do scientists know what is below the lowest dept we have ever reached? Like how would scientists know there is a large solid iron sphere in the middle
reply

Punching a hole of that magnitude through Earth would cause a global catastrophe, as much of the magma would escape to the surface through this hole
reply

If u take a gravity subway what happens when u reach the middle? Gravity would prevent u from continuing further and coming out the other side
reply

Why always in kilometers? Metric system is not the only thing people use and frankly I'm getting sick of looking up the conversions.
reply

I just had a thought that we are falling but how to get to the other side by just falling? We should be upwards in the other side right?
reply

I am here for how the hole affects Earth life and continent if it really exists. but not here for Earth stats, very disappointed: (
reply

what if the earth was only the soil. no mantle, no core. and for digging I only use the shovel. then I come out feet first?
reply

If we drilled into the core, it would spark all the volcanoes on the planet to explode, causing our extinction. again. yes.
reply

I have read that the gravity decreases from Earth's surface to its core. So how would it be possible to travel across?
reply

I Know Why Is The Core Is The Hell Of The Senter Of The Heaven But I dont know you are only the one who can figure it out
reply

What if you passed through the core and reached the other side? Would you be upside down? Or will you be flipped?
reply

What if we dig a hole not through the center, only from the outer crust under the ocean from one part to another?
reply

A movie was made about this, and the movie shows that there is no gravity in the middle of the earth.

Wow that so interesting enjoyed newexperiencing subject and love to new learning talk about Earth!
