Interesting video. I don’t agree with your politics. I enjoy the rest of your videos though, before you got all politics-y. I am a zelennial, born in 95, grew up in a middle class suburb of a very blue city in a blue midwestern state. Some similar experiences to your hypothetical character, but also differing ones. I definitely can hear and see the things you’re saying, and how they really do play out in real life. I don’t think voting R is the answer though, because those folks don’t work for the average Thomas. We need to get past the current two party system. Only way to do that is to reject the R’s absurd policy proposals and force them to adopt a more rational point of view, such as what you’re speaking of. Republican/right wing economic policies have continually failed worldwide. We need politicians to be more liberal economically, while scaling back heavily on the social justice focus. That’s my opinion. I respect yours, but I also think it’s egregious to suggest that right wing politics in its current state is going to make anything better. The poor will get poorer and the middle class will continue to shrink. I truly believe Kamala is the answer this time around. I hope that the Rs give up on Trump-ism, religious focus, and billionaire pandering. We need a party that works for the middle class without the social justice focus.

I’m 19, I never cared about college, just enrolled in community college, my parents basically stopped parenting me by age 13, now they financially support me completely. I can relate a lot to Tom, The only thing I have better than him is a father, and rich parents, because of them I don’t have to worry about job stability and money, and I can just rest on my laurels and do nothing, it makes me miserable knowing how it’s this bad and all of these trends are increasing over time, my only wish is to have a family and give my children a life outside of this, I know Tom has given up on it, but I can’t, it’s the one light at the end of the tunnel, my roommate has a girlfriend who was his high school sweetheart and I envy him so much. But even he is miserable. Speaking as a member of the upper class, even without the financial struggles the misery and emptiness is not solved fixed or helped, just masked and pretended. I find everything you say so poignant, I’m going to try and be easier on myself as I’d be easier on Tom. Thanks for letting me be easier on myself, even if it’s only a little bit.

23: 30 oh man, this unlocked a lost memory for me. As boys we often had to hammer out rules for roleplays or board games when the rulebooks were (always) missing. Whenever there was disagreement or conflict, the all-female teaching staff would stop the event and forcibly disperse us, rather than trying to properly mediate or offer a compromise.
Our biggest debacle came when we were 10 and 11, and found a forested area to roleplay Monday Night Raw, well outside the sight of any schoolmarms. Needless to say, the busted lips and bruises and muddy clothes caused the teaching staff to mald off the planet; they acted like we had formed a violence gang, and then proceeded to call all of our parents for a massive sh! tshow of a conference. Hilariously my parents never showed up because they were both busy working, and when they asked me what happened I just said We were just playing Monday Night Raw and the teachers got mad. Thankfully my parents were chill about it; told me to be careful next time.

The common denominator for all these problems seems to be alienation. Young people are not forming good relationships in their personal and business lives. If only they could do that, most of these problems would be cease to exist. One young person cannot afford a house, but a group of young people who make home ownership a priority can afford one. It may not be a perfect house, neighborhood, or situation, but it would be a start. It would beat being broke, alone and desperate. They need to stop trying to do everything themselves and find ways of building a future with others. Not everybody has a family where this is possible, so for many, forming friendships and good working relationships is the key. Roommates, clients, coworkers, neighbors, family, friends, we as human beings do best by being part of something that we contribute to. People to celebrate success with and support one another when difficulties arise.

Just turned 27 here. From New Jersey, always felt semi different from my peers. Catholic dad, Jehovahs Witnesses mom, so I never felt like I had a solid community. Decided to translate religiosity into secular passion. Staffer on Capitol Hill for two and a half years, in a masters program now. Being an only child with mild autism has left me feeling like I want to be noticed, not to feel forgotten in my later years, and thus got deep into politics. I don’t believe in following trends or other thinking parents that I cannot create logically in my own mind. I am very fortunate to have found a girl who loves me for my unique perspective and will hopefully get married at the beginning of 2026. I don’t think I’ve changed politically but feel myself identifying more with social conservative values than I was before, still relatively left on economic issues.

Man, 36: 00-38: 00. You say this is only happening to White guys Bro, you just described my life. And that diversity only pertains to women. I have a Business degree 3. 6 GPA and before I started a trucking company, I would get called for numerous interviews in Socal having a Hispanic first name, but would get rejected after the interview for an actual Hispanic person on numerous occasions. I also have a 115 IQ according to Mensa and I am still heartbroken from that experience. I don't know if it's stereotypes or what. But I went to college in Oregon, one of the Whitest States in the Union and did well. Even still, I was treated as if my efforts didn't mean sheit. Only the politics mattered. That's why I'm personally voting for Trump.

I have it better than many young guys. Making about $60k a year with very low debt. However. After losing around 1/3rd of it to taxes, over $10k to rent each year, and so on. The ability to have any money left over for food, gas, saving, dating, hobbies, etc is unbelievably small. Then add that 40 percent of what I make was lost to inflation in the past 4 years. Well, that math means that I'm making less money today than when I was 18 working my first full time job.
Something's gotta give. And that's coming from someone in a drastically better scenario than most guys my age. Either costs have got to drop, or wages have got to increase. Otherwise the pressure in this cooker will keep rising.

Going against the pattern still requires a stated pattern to follow.
It is also a bit too much to believe that someone in this world cannot find good reasons to believe in God. The entire universe consists of a massive series and system composed of myriads upon myriads of interlocking smaller and interwoven series and systems which all must function with synchronous fashion while also operating interdependently and hence independently within their own functions.
To find something like that in a hunk of metal today would be to expect at least the patent for and some ownership of said item.
Let’s not take a nihilistic or gnostic approach to this. Let’s be pragmatic here.

This is crazy. Glad that we dont have such problems in Europe. You often critique Europe BUT you should reconsider because we are a much healthier society. We have basically free education, low cost health care, better food and drink, better culture etc all financed by higher taxes but more egalitarian as your Gini graph proves. Thats why we are more sustainable than you are! So correct your anti european bias! You need to come back to France. You were here before but that was before you realized how sick US society is! You even use european paintings and fancy french words like ennui to convey your message!

I showed my brother this video, and he kept arguing with me about how it doesn't matter whether people's lives are worse now and that you can't determine that anyway (despite numerous studies that demonstrate otherwise. He didn't explain to me exactly what he disagreed with in the video. Any personal anecdotes I would throw at him to support your points would be disregarded as oh you can't know that for certain. It's obvious he was obfuscating as a way of coping.
Coping is very real and it's very hard to get through to people who are. It's like a solid wall that's resistant to reason.

I feel like you built a strawman that you build a whole thesis around. For example people above thirty generally don't care that much about politics, only 40-43% of marriages end in divorce and people often remarry. You have majority viewers in California, but what's then majority Let's say it's 40%, then what's the percentage of US viewers, let's say it's 60% then you would take 24% of your viewer population and take it as an average, that wouldn't be representative. Unless I assume wrong and for some reason especially California loves you, but that does seem unlikely for me.

Hey Tom, you claim you don't have time for yourself, but you make time for pom. You claim you don't have money to save, but you have money for we'd. You can't wait for life to get better before you tell yourself it matters; you have to tell yourself it matters more than everything else before it will ever get better. Tom, I want to see you succeed and be happy, but that's hard, and hard is never easy. It's not meant to be, or else it wouldn't be worth as much. I hope you understand the long-term sympathy this was said with.

It's moments like this I remember how fortunate I am. A great faith life, a beautiful wife and adorable daughter. My parents love each other to this day, all my siblings are devout Christians and conservative. I love my job, and it enables me to pursue passions and save for the future.
I'm a 25 years old straight white male in the US. I love my God my country and my family. The world will try to beat you down and grind you into a paste but fight like hell everyday and you'll be able to make a difference in this world.

I mean im from europe. Im living with my parents and three of my siblings, and this is pretty good life. From the moment i went to work we are getting better and better. Now my brother is going to work so it's gonna be a lot easier for us. Im waiting for my sisters to get to work so we as a family we gonna pay mortrage faster. Remember guys family is the best thing you can have or make. My parents was poor when we were 6 years old for example. (that was 13 years ago) but now we are doing pretty good.

I'm literally crying for Thomas. I'm over 40 and doing great. Financially, so are most of my friends from university, though their families didn't happen and their politics all went left while mine went right. I can't do anything for him, not even convince people that Thomas is not OK, or that he's worth caring about. All I know how to do is look after myself and my family until the world changes. Good luck Thomas, and know that you have the right to have civilization care about your plight.

the amount of sad and gloomy comments here makes me think you guys don’t get enough physical exercise or you pay too much mind to others social standards.
life gets rough and sometimes it beats your ass to the brink, but fighting your way back up is half the fun.
Don’t just lay down and take it!
On a personal note I am coping with this dudes voice it’s like a cross between a 14 year old girl with vocal fry and a dude who’s still in Puberty lol

I relate a lot with Tom but worry I’m becoming a normie.
I’m happy now and living life but not really satisfied I’m a little drunk now after two alcoholic drinks. I don’t like drinking alone but my good friend and housemate/tenant isn’t home this week. I watched porn after work and before supper because I won’t be able to meet up with my girlfriend this evening. I am sharing way too much here.
Thanks Rutger. This is a good video

There are definitely people hurting out there, and there are various reasons for that I would think, but I don't buy that there was a time in the past where this wasn't the case. Struggle is part of the human condition, always has been, always will be. They'll figure it out, and guys, check in with your homies, don't take for granted that they are doing okay. Be there for them, and they'll be there for you.

This video made me realize I have it better than most. I only identify with like half of the things in it or less. But I see a lot of people going through this or worse so I know it’s true. I wish the best for everyone feeling stuck in life. I’m still in college (not by choice) getting a bullsht degree and barely getting through it but working to start my own car dealership afterwards. We’ll see how it goes
