Usain Bolt is the world's fastest man because he has the record for the 100 meter sprint at 9. 58 seconds. But could runners go faster? WIRED's Robbie Gonzalez explores the science of extreme sprinting speed

The problem with running the 100m in 9 seconds is the fact that the faster you run, the less time you have to accelerate since the race has been reduced by 10% of time. So you would need accelerate or get up to top speed so ridiculously fast that it's not a matter of increasing top speed but more an issue of achieving top speed faster. To get to 9 seconds, you'd need Usain Bolt levels of top speed and get to that insane top speed within your first step or two, which is humanly impossible.

Bolt does 41 strides in 100m.
That converts to math formula, his average stride covers 2. 44m, in 1 second he takes 4 strides in about 10 sec race.
Normal human legs cannot flip 3 times in 1 sec. -.
Also if you stand on the sideline, you cannot see his face clearly when he run pass you: )
All you see whoosh, a shadow glides by, his footsteps are nearly silent.

Bolt has never been the fastest out of the blocks but once he gets up to speed, his top speed is unmatched. In an ideal scenario it might just be possible to get close or even beat the elusive 9.

I don't think it's something I'll ever see, sub 9. 5 seconds would be quite unbelievable. I also do not see a woman running -legit, as a woman- under 10 seconds in my lifetime

The video didn't actually answer the question in the title at all. Just stated what kind of forces would be required but didn't specify why that would be impossible.

great video with some lessons even for us amateur non sprint runners. Having a lot of slow motion pictures reallys highlights technique and running style

Meanwhile, the hunters in pre-industrial Africa running 200 meters in 10 seconds while being chased by wild animal be like:
-limbs go- -

I still don-t think it is possible but if their flight or flight response is active then it may be possible to do it in under 9 seconds

Awesome video, the graphs and the motion capture with slow motion where real nice to get a better grip of body mechanics at those speeds.
