Arthas Menethil's Complete Story. All Lich King Cinematics. Beloved Prince. Beloved character in the heart of every Warcraft player. Once Crown Prince of Lordaeron, Arthas Menethil took up Frostmourne to save his land, yet brought only death, slaying his father, scourging his kingdom & destroying Quel'thalas, home of the High Elves & raising Sylvanas Windrunner as a banshee. Rising as the Lich King, the Death Knights after learning of his betrayal, joined the Argent Dawn and along with Tirion Fordring, now wielding holy Ashbringer brought the Crusade to Northrend. Includes Arthas Menethil's entire Life story from Warcraft 3, Wrath of the Lich King & Shadowlands (shenanigans but canon I guess I am actually glad they did not give Arthas a redemptive arc, and I like that he was reduced to a speck that faded away in the end. Arthas made his choices, and he was hardly a tragic hero or a sympathetic villain. He gave himself to evil willingly; Frostmourne just brought the evil forth. Especially when you read The Rise of the Lich King book, when he puts on the Lich King's crown, he deliberately murders the part of himself that was still good, leaving nothing but his evil side and the Lich King. Not every character that descends into evil deserves a redemptive story arc; sometimes, it is more interesting for them to fully descend into evil, and to see the consequences of taking that path. And to see him get reduced to an insignificant speck that fades into the wind is a fitting end for a character that chose the path that Arthas did. It is a good symbol of what evil ultimately does to the soul: it drains it away, devouring it until there is nothing left, and the person who chose the path is reduced to a wisp that fades and dies, unloved, forgotten, and insignificant. I liked it.

Always felt that Arthas did the right thing. When you arrive to a place and find that all the citizens are doomed not just to die, but to have their souls captured and tormented by Demon Worshippers, and you know for absolutely certain that you cannot find a alternative in time to save those souls from eternal suffering, the only option would be to kill and liberate those souls before they can be claimed, not just to keep them from being used as enemy soldiers against their own kingdom, but to protect the most sacred aspect of life, the soul.
Jaina truly failed him in that she both knew of this alongside Arthas, but with her magical knowledge would have had a stronger understanding of the capabilities of a soul being corrupted and captured, and had personally seen the torment of those turned to undeath as she traveled with Arthas.
Uther, someone with holy capabilities, would also be fully aware of how souls can become corrupted against their will, but may not have seen the same evidence as Arthas and Jaina so had a more reasonable reason to reject doing so, but should have been more willing to listen considering he HAD come across the undead before this point and knew of the damning effects. The main failure was Jaina, who, had she been on Arthas's side, could have convinced Uther, with the entire group being able to 'save' far more and possibly even get a foot up on Mal'Ganis, though he probably had a plan for that anyways.

-and refused to obey his crueld command-. wait you lost me there, I was with you the whole way until you said that, he made the most rational and the ONLY choice possible, what the F are you talking about?
you want to know why Arthas was corrupted by that blade? because he touched it, while he put on that crown? because he was corrupted by that blade, and you want to know why he grabbed the blade in the first place in Northrend. because he needed power to defeat the people behind the plague. power he did not have alone and relied on the blade for. had the two of you never abandoned him, he would have had the power needed, from a mentor and friend, and from his lover, to defeat those foes. and NONE OF THIS would have ever happened.
56: 21. again, another one who lost me, what!
2: 11: 42 this isn't right, this is SO not right, he wasn't in control, it wasn't him!

For me as someone who played Warcraft 1+2+ Beyond the Dark Portal for countless hours, Arthas was the biggest frustration that came with the WotlK Exp. I really liked the whole Ner'zhul plot in Wc2 and was shocked when the undead in Wc3 praised his name. To me Warcraft3 was his story, to me it was like watching star wars, knowing Palpatine but not Anakin/Vader. And every inch of Warcraft 3 + TFT felt like his mastermind being the big winner in the end. Arthas was nothing like a pawn, just a Vader copy - not even a single moment did I think he would play any role in the continuation of the story after TFT ending. And damn - instead it was Ner'zhul that got deleted like he was never there. Oh and yes: This new Lichking became a lot dumber than the OG.

Now i look at it. Uther and Jaina were terrbile friends.
Arthas had simple choice - either purges the city of ALREADY dead people who can become an unstoppable horde of undead or he lets them become just that and allow far more deaths to happen. If only they stayed with him and helped him get through it everything could've turn out different but they just literally ran. They were too cowardish to make that decision and proposed no alternatives.
Because of that, Arthas had an enormous burden to bear alone and that was what destroyed him. To even think that later Uther still tosses him to the Maw out of vengance (I don't believe in this -justice- of his) is making me hate Uther even more.

Arthas: I will do anything to save my people!
Arthas: I will even sell my soul for it!
Arthas: Now I destroy my people for the lich king!
Me: Yeah, he sold his soul for nothing! He sold it to help his people and now he's using it to destroy them, lol.
Yeah, Arthas lost himself, proof there is no worth in self-sacrifice if it means killing yourself for your people.

thank you very much for this movie! I admit to being confused on at least one point: what of the remains of Arthas' soul? did it cease UTTERLY to exist after being freed? or does some of it remain? I never yet bought the shadowlands expansion. and that soul did play a part, it seems in the events following the Fusion of the two into one Lich King!

What people refuse to understand is. You will become different person the moment you kill your own. Arthas heart become even more blackened and he turn to evil path and no longer knows the different between saving his people or delivering them into the devil's hand. This is where the line between right and wrong blurred.

I think you missed the quest where you go under ICC and, guided by a child named -Matthias Lehner-, find Arthas' frozen heart and then confront him with Tirion. There's a little cutscene there where he's like -Hey thanks for finding the last bit of my humanity, now I can destroy it and get even stronger. -
reply

Arthas sacrificed himself for his people than whne he was cotrolled by Lich king he was an instrument of their destruction, and his family too, than he was used to forge a weapon for destruction of existence and cycle of life and death. Than he stopped even exist. That is so sad. I hoe Jaina will find a new love.
reply

Listen up you donkeys. Arthas ceased to be Arthas the moment he picked up Frostmourne.
Frostmourne was so powerful that it even managed to hypnotise Arthas before he even touched it, and prevent him from healing a dying Muradin; to wrench him from his dying friend and mentor and to take it up instead.

We need this sort of effort in the game today. The lore at the beginning of the franchise was so good and dark. I feel like our culture is too sensitive to stories like this in todays age, and they-ve tried to Disney-ify the game. They need to quit that shit and make some good lore again
reply

This guy was a slaughter happy maniac. He wasn't corrupted by power, his cruelty and malice were revealed by his power. That is what makes him one of the best written villains in contemporary media. Any attempt of justification or redemption reduces the value and impact of his story.
reply

Honestly i dont think he can be redeemd he willingly did all that yes lichking did influance him but it started when he murderd an entire city. I wasent possible. Arthas was like thjs since day 1 yea people are njce but the power of being royalty and a lust for vengance drove him
reply

-The only way to destroy the lich king is to defeat him at the place where he was created. - Okay, but. why? what's so special about there? why can't he be defeated anywhere else? he's been forced to retreat from other places already, so why must it be there?
reply

Its amazing that the story from Warcraft 3 has spanned for more than 20 years with most original characters still playing an important role. That is how good that writing was. Its shame that Bllizzard has given up on RTS games and focused on this RPG crap.
reply

Can't make sense of it, people forced against their will and then made to take responsibility for it? Seriously? I feel like they didn't think too deeply about this and just forced that conundrum to push the story to it's end. Made no sense at all.
reply

As far as I'm concerned, Arthas is on top of the frozen throne, sitting there as the new lich king. I don't accept the wow continuty-, this story can only be done right in its original setting. an rts. and blizzard will never make one again -
reply

I stopped watching just before Uther throws Arthas into The Maw. As far as I am concerned, Shadowlands never happened. The story ended as it should have years ago, and SL was just Activision beating a literal dead horse for money.
reply

What if? Destroying the Helm of Domination freed Nerzhul and now he return to Northrend to seize control of the scourge. The return of the true Lich King. -
And now Anduin return with Arthas to save Azeroth from the dead.

reply

malfurion was ungrateful. if my brother sacrificed himself to save our home, I'd be devastated and would try to honor him, and help him find peace. Banishing Illidan made him into a monster, it wasnt the fel.
reply

Watching and hearing this narration just assures me even more that the MOMENT he picked up that fking blade, everything went to shit and Arthas was no longer himself, all -he did- was not his doing any longer.
reply

Great video, great job! Amazing story of a truely amazing game character. Sadly this shows how terrible Shadowlands was lorewise for both Arthas and the game in general GOT season 7+8 flashbacks.
reply

Honestly don't get why Jaina didn't just help arthas when he seeked revenge on Malganis. What he did was the most logically correct option and would save the most people.
reply

Only now do I realize, the voice talking when Arthas is kneeling before his father, isn't actually Arthas to his father, but Frostmourne itself talking to Arthas
reply

I hate blizzard because they let Arthas to be doomed forever. So silvanas killed more than Arthas and still she got a redeption mission. Not fair. BRING ARTHAS BACK
reply

One of the most iconic characters in gaming 20 years later they managed to ruin him utterly and Lich King too. Shadowlands should never have happened.
reply

Man I seriously wish Microsoft greenlights some sort of film adaptation of Illidan Stormrage and Arthas/Lich King 2 parter film series!
