I think this short movie is an approach to showing how 2 people who've never met, with different cultures and tongues can find safety in each other when the world is in peril.
A person who, in my regular life, would've never been my friend, is now my close companion.
Simply: The Japanese girl was probably picked up from her hometown and dumped where the American girl is. They were both hiding from the aliens and during that time they become close, even though they don't understand each other. The American girl thinks they're gone, all three of them but we saw only two leaving from the window. The third gets her. It's not clear if the Japanese girl is taken too, but the American girl is definitely taken and dumped into a forest of some kind I saw some people speculating that it could be a different timeline too But if that was the case, we would have seen some hint of that in the interaction between the girls. So I'm thinking the displacement is simply spatial, not temporal.
Why the aliens do this and what they do exactly No idea. But it's a nice approach to show how regardless of language and culture, we humans yearn for other humans in the face of complete loneliness and fear. As much as some may like being alone, we wouldn't wish it upon ourselves to be completely lonely.

Not much story there. It’s a waste of time for me. I know others seemed to love this, but I don’t see the attraction. There were a lot of elements without plot purpose, the picking of the lock, the pointless drinking game, the unexplained but apparent shielding properties of the slate pool table, etc. The concept of the displaced animals was given away in the first few seconds, so nothing new there. The girls feared being picked up and dropped off in inappropriate places. Then there was their apparent inability to count to 3 at the end. Pointless, all of it.

Moral of the story - the aliens aren't all that different from humans. Anyone who's ever worked a retail job of any kind knows about the careless dicks who decide they don't want something after all and just toss it on a random shelf somewhere on the other side of the store. For me, one of those jobs was Blockbuster. A person would see a movie that piqued their interest more than the one they had in their hand, so they grab the new movie and put the other one in its place. There are so many people like that. _Why should I care I don't have to deal with it. _

It certainly is more realistic then the usually space invader arrives on earth, only to destroy everything stuff.
Considering how our own governments & corporations have treated the living things in their own backyards. It's perfectly plausible if a pencil pusher from an advanced alien race, just signed off on sending a horde of cheap repurposed drones to scan that new backwater planet for resources. Bet those things even keep blaring about a universal hotline to call their support services.

The aliens fry your brain. She heard her friend constantly speaking Chinese. Now that her brain had been tampered with, it would’ve been poetically tragic if she could now speak Chinese and is nowhere near her Chinese speaking friend.
Just a simple, Oh no! in Chinese would’ve let us know, and added an extra layer of sadness to her predicament.

This is freaking sweet. I really love it when the writers allude to creatures and mystical beings rather than showing them. It adds so much depth to a film and a lot of people said this already but it felt so natural kind of like intruding on their moment.

I liked it . Good acting , using an age old language barrier scenario with a slight war of the wold’s VIBE. WELL executed ( it didn’t feel like two people acting ) very clean. however it was missing something . special / different.
reply

I've seen this before.
The sense that it makes is
when two people are thrown
into an uncompromising position -
it doesn't matter how far away
in background they are
they will find commonalities.

Would someone that knows that there is a perceived danger outside a window, walk to the window and then immediately turn their back on the window or the danger In a movie Yes. Always. It must be the most overused movie thing ever. I hate it.

So it seems as if the space invaders capture living things (animals and people, run whatever tests they run, and then just dump them off wherever. This definitely needs a part 2. Where was she supposed to be at the end

Great job, acting and dialogue was so natural, and the use of light was so good! The effects were well done and the story is very interesting. I agree, continuing the story would be awesome! Thank you for sharing!

I don'na understand. Are they clearin' the planet o' all life to rehome them on another Did the other character then get doomed to stay on the original, possibly diein', planet They hid to their detriment
reply

World gone to crap BUT the makeup and nails were perfect! Usually I like most most DUST shorts/movies, but the SCI-FI was lacking. mostly just female chatter, get a score of 1 for nice nails!
reply

Do they always capture animals or insects if the light touches them That forest would be full of life not just animals but insects in the millions but you could hear them, kind of silly
reply

Is there a reason why they are speaking in two different languages but yet they both understand what the other is saying I love the chemistry between these two charters.
reply

Can someone tell me if this is an actual drinking game that exists, and what the rules are
I can’t help but feel I’d be less effective than pure chance at it lol

How about having a plot for your story How about if you actually tell a story and not just sling together a bunch of useless, disjointed images to create some art
reply

Wow! Really enjoyed this one. Great story, but really sad. How long will this stuff be happening to this people and how long will they survive it

Many dust movies leave conclusions to audiance. At times its wonderful but sometimes more opening up. However we must reapect the view of writers.
reply

I am amazed at how well constructed this story is. Much better than Black Mirror and MANY other shows with enormous budgets! Keep em coming!
reply

No real plot. Nothing to explain what is going on Two women who can't understand each other getting drunk. Not much to reccomend.
reply

Low key, but interesting film, shifting between warm intimacy and cold fear. Nicely played, with the two different languages.
reply

Putting them back doesn't determine the specimen are placed back in their habitats, just not taken off-world.

excellent, quiet simple, touching, empathetic, powerful. we understood what was happening. no need for any more.

12 minutes I will never get back. This is what I've come to expect from Dust and I wasn't disappointed.
reply

this had me invested within the first 30 seconds! i absolutely need to know more. excellent work.
reply

Would plus take the subtitles and make it a option if I want to read it or not
It ruined the moment

reply

Hugely good. Also, part 2 please. great actors, script, sound, filming. but way too short
reply

Terrible audio, terrible CC, terrible plot that’s why these 12min felt like an hour
reply

Even as a repeat this story is still enticing. Hope it gets completed some day.
reply

These aliens are horrible scientists. I think it's a bunch of kids.
reply

Friendship in the end knows no language. All can understand friendship.
reply

Ok, well that's 12 minutes of my life I'll never never back. Come on
reply

Crazy, but good!
Love the cool cycads in the background at the end.

reply

Great story. Intriguing. I would watch a full-length movie of this.
