Lovely, thought provoking story. Great acting. Grandma's make-up terrific. End song so hauntingly beautiful. Apparently we are genetically programmed to live to around 150 years of age so if diseases that are common in the elderly were treatable then this extreme technology may not be necessary until after this age. That being the case then pushing beyond this would surely be manipulating nature. Though if a person wants to live using technology then it is their choice, pacemakers, stints, transplants, etc all seem to be viable choices especially when they promote life. However, it has to be an individual choice not manipulative family or other interference. My understanding at this point.

I find myself critical of art like this as for me it lacks any depth do to lack of story. I have no idea what's going on and so to me the viewer is forced to fill in so many blanks that I personally can only conclude the story is non existent. Every character becomes extreme assumptions by the viewer. I find myself feeling nothing but emptiness not because the family is shallow but because the story is shallow. Some of the short films are good and fun, to me this one was created from a roll of the dice. Unexplored or explained world, check. Awkward family check, dying woman with no back story, check. Cake, check. stairs. check. random music. check. Picked out of a hat.

i have soooo many questions
1. Since she had that machine in her back, does that mean shes a cyborg
2. I kinda didnt get it, so what the hell is it supposed to mean
3. Why does she sleep in a room filled with empty futuristic wheelchairs
4. What does CXL stand for
I have many more, but thats all i got for now.

Nice she didn't have to be alone at the end. I read a book long ago where a guy was looking for his sister. He never found her. She died alone on a distant planet far from home and family. Alone. Made me feel so sad for her and her brother. Dying alone far away. And never finding the last of your loved ones.

Media about disabled people should be created by disabled people.
Like the house, this film is an hostile environment, only tolerating the disabled, not reasonably accommodating her. Holding her prisoner to ableist guilt and condescension.
No wonder she'd rather die.

reply

How that family managed to pretty much abandon her even while having her in their home.
i'm glad she was able to make it upstairs to her beautiful comfortable room and spend her last moments with her granddaughter. Seemed to be the only one that really loved her any more.

I work in a hotel and when someone cancels their reservation is shows CXL. I couldn't figure it out until I read the description saying the woman was 140 years old. I definitely thought this was going to be a death mandated at a certain age type of storyline.
reply

So she couldn't pick up a cake but she can get her oxygen easily, climb stairs using her arms and much more. She was just looking for attention at that table
In all seriousness, this was very moving and emotional.

This reminded me of when my uncle passed away. He had a pacemaker which kept ticking all the way through until it turned off and we knew he was gone. Beautiful film about knowing when the time has come.

Death will always be an enemy to the living. There is nothing happy about it. At times, relief after suffering but never happiness. Human beings have been indoctrinated into believing death is natural.
reply

Well that was a struggle. Say NO TO UBER-LIFE EXTENSION, Millenials and Neo-Peeps. KEEP HUMANITY NATURAL. Transhumanism is the real NEO NAZTI PHILOSOPHY, Super-Progressive Libtards.
reply

It the quality of life- not the quanity. I am 70 and can hardly walk. This is not quality. My head thinks I am still 40 but my body says otherwise. Good video. Sad but realistic.

Instead of 140 candles why not Roman numerals, so cool
Roman numeral candles should be a thing now
I personally wouldn’t want to be kept alive that long tho

song: What our love used to be, performed by Doomernag. Probably only on use for that Dust production --- Beautiful movie, it touches my heart every time.

I live all of these and loved the leap the best. but this one is the first one I HAD TO SHARE WITH SOMEONE. I sent it to my mom. I can't cry alone

Anyone else think they were in a Martian colony, and that was a dust storm outside I know most comments say it's Earth with a crazy climate, but.
reply

This video and the addition of Jordan Blazak's song is nothing short of brilliance. I will spend my short life watching this another 50 times.
reply

so the outside was nuclear war The family was selfish trying to keep loved ones so they do not have to face the pain of loss.
reply

That wouldn't traumatize a child, committing suicide with them next to you! We all die, but we don't invite children to see it.
reply

Are they all clones of her and Ernest i know your childeren and grandchildren look alike, but it seems almost too close
reply

Will someone please explain how a 140-year-old woman confined to a life-support chair can still walk unaided
reply

Best advert for dying, ever! Would recommend, 100%. Side Note: No refunds, returns, or exchanges.
reply

Apropros of nothing, and this is serious advice, try to find a house without stairs before you get old.
reply

Beautiful made me think of my grandmother. She died almost 30 years ago and I still feel that lost.
reply

Memories of my elderly mother in her middle 90s, waiting to die. I have just a few more years myself.
reply

I demand this chair, I’ll make it work until they can reverse age me or upload me into VR land
reply

They would place the cake the other way, so CXL reads normally for her, but backwards for us.
reply

Wonderful film. I'm with Grandma, I couldn't do that tethered to a chair thing either.
reply

Being 1 year off 70, makes me reflect on life after watching this beautiful short film.
reply

This was well made with a hint of mysterious at the end with that storm out the women's window.
