Sci-Fi Short Film: Klewa - DUST

In the future, a Hawaiian astronaut makes the next great leap for his planet, his family, and himself. Tonight is his last chance. Klewa by Mitchel Viernes Connect with the Filmmakers: Klewa Ive now seen a couple of SciFi shorts where the SciFi part is just a cheap excuse to create some emotional drama that wouldnt occur if the story had any kind of realism. Im pretty sure if you had been selected for a 15-years space mission with a risk of never coming back, you would have been trained to make sure not to leave the settling of major family issues until the last minute. Another short film, Generation Mars, has exactly the same problem. Sure, you can do what you want, but perhaps it would be honest then to not call this SciFi.

I liked that, it was good, enjoyable but why are Americans incapable of making uplifting endings Why couldn't the character, against all odds, make it back because he was determined not to allow his father lose his son after losing his wife What happened to inspirational characters You used to be able to create them, but now it seems like a lost art. Who are you going to inspire in the next generation by having characters that don't achieve things against all odds Get back to the Roddenberry school of story telling. Society needs that.

Met a really nice guy from Hawaii when I was young- around 22 - after about a year he went back and asked me to visit some time - so I did and loved the environment - all accept how the people were so racist- he told me I should think of myself as black in the south - they no like howlees. They were rude & so cold when you talked to them they didn’t answer you back.

Well played. A superlative short. Thank you!
And echoing the comments of others here.
Whilst I am a white guy outside the local indigenous cultures here, I did grow up here alongside our native cultures and have great respect for them. Always a pleasure to participate in forwarding cultural awareness.

didn't like the standard fair speech at end - cliche and boring. Instead this -
To them I say love never dies - there are no goodbyes - I will always be with them as they will be with me.
Like all the actors - and the story line was good - thank you

Not gonna lie, that was better than most 90 min big blockbuster sci fi feature films. please give film makers like this more budget to create intelligent emotional films. We are sick of the nonsensical magic super hero crap which makes no sense at all!
reply

More emotion and better acting than 90% of the overpriced films that tank. The fact a short film can accomplish a better story and bring actual enjoyment is a good example of how much money is just wasted in Hollywood.

Extremely good script, story, timings. very, very good. Wow and bravo. Just the dates were disturbing, no way we are there in 2040 or 2050, it should have been at least 2100. But ok. Excellent story.

Why does so much sci fi try to be about sentiment and personal drama and deep meaning That's a different genre guys. Go there, do it if you want. You got lots of competition. But don't call if sci fi.

Dang, reading some of these comments, I feel like I should have something profound to say. but I don't. I really enjoyed every aspect of this film, only wish it were longer! Thanks

Perfect on all levels, all domains: dialogues (human and with its AI-assistant-package, drama, emotionally, family, humanity, SF (Sci-Fi for USAmericans, especially A. I. and social.

This could have been better without all the family drama bs. That and the politically correct cast. God forbid we use anyone other than people of color. I’m one of them too btw.
reply

Why aren't there ever any good endings It would have been better for him to make it back to ship and escape the planet. But have to report that it could never be inhabited.

A very well written and acted film. Explores some very complicated family issues that comes with loss, and the planet terrain was pretty sweet!

What a bummer dude.
Me thinks that that far in the future the big kahuna would have a helper from Boston dynamics or something geez.

I shed tears. What an amazing sci-fi drama, yet so real and brave and steeped in tradition. Every actor was perfectly on-point.

What the heck kind of Harry Potter style Polaroid photos do they use in Hawaii! And where can I buy them! That sh! t's amazing!
reply

That was absolutely beautiful. Dust is my go-to for great productions, absolutely everything I've seen has been a masterpiece.
reply

Its ok aliens came and saved him lol
This had real emotion, compare this to Star trek Picard which had what 1000x the budget

Excellent. Very touching. Well scripted and acted. Just one small suggestion. Push back the start date. 2043 is too close.
reply

High pitched, loud squeaking at 6: 24 makes this a fail. Why on earth would anyone put such an abrasive sound effect in anything
reply

Outstanding! Such weaving of the currents of emotion and tensions. Each interaction is a small vignette. Well done!
reply

Why are the DUST stories so sad almost all the time I loved the film and it was beautiful, but still so sad.

You can bet THIS CREW wants the big scope on Mona Kea.

Greatly reminds me Interstellar) enjoyed actors playing. I wish there was a long movie like this)

So damn sad yet that's real life. Sometimes there just isn't a rising fanfare nor a miracle ending.

Finally some more diversity in DUST! I love the Hawaiian actors and cultural references.

Superb story telling. This felt very personal. Kudos for the film makers for a great job
