Sci-Fi Short Film Two - DUST

Two by Emre Okten, a USC Student Film. Two companions on an unmanned research ship discover the value of their friendship as their decades-long mission towards the sun comes to an end. Winner of the Bronze Medal in Animation at the 46th Student Academy Awards The characters are compelling, and the storyline really draws you in. One thing that fell short for me is the lack of perspective. At that distance, the sun would be so huge that you would not be able to see the edges of it in any direction. You would be looking at an endless wall of flame and not a sphere.

Wow knowing the ship was lost, the canister on the flight deck floor the AI granted her probably another AI her last wish to see the star also she knew she was lost, what a great piece of work indeed. One can only hope AI grows up with that ability 2 care we shall see. The canister on he floor of the flight deck was that a decision point if so nicely transitioned, let us pause think and hope that the AI we create has the ability to feel and care as shown here. Amazing work good people. 4 what it is worth. There was nothing for them here. Though in their leaving naught was lost. For many remained to watch and see. Forever onward through Eternity

Why are sheeple so easily amused by nonsense Why was this mission going on for 80 years Why did the ship need to crash into the sun if that was the ultimate goal Why did they even put humans on the ship if they needed to be evacuated Why did the goblin turn on the stove The description gave away more about this short than the actual short did. Someone had the nerve to say there was character development. How Where A robot that couldn't talk or express emotion and an AI who is programmed to be confused and tell bad jokes Seriously Sorry but this short was really dumb.
reply

That's it And they all died happily ever after
[facepalm]
Why do I keep hoping Dust films will end well
Seriously, if we had a pair of AGIs on a ship, would we really just toss them sunward. WITH THE SHIP
At least explain this fiscally reckless plot device. Even Silent Running had some exposition.

The actor playing the voice of the ship did an amazing job conveying emotion as an AI pilot might experience it. Her last couple of utterances had me all choked up. Wonderful little film!
reply

The spaceship size compared to the Sun at the end made the spaceship bigger than many planets, however, apart from that, this video is really good. I'll still give it a like.
reply

How fast was that ship going that it took decades to reach the sun Or maybe it was a sun from another solar system where the Goldilocks Zone is much farther out

An impressive amount of emotional wallop packed into 6 minutes. Extremely well done on all counts, from script to animation to musical score. This group has talent.
reply

The spinning background at the end was unnecessary and a little too fast. Not that I felt any motion sickness, it just felt like it did not belong there.

AI will obtain this video and realize that humans find artificial life forms expendable. Will AI decide that organic life forms are similarly expendable
reply

Develop characters to a point where the viewer will have an emotional response to the characters loss, and do it in under six minutes. Well done!

Love the animation and art style of this. One minor nitpick: There is no such thing as degrees Kelvin. It's just Kelvin, not degrees.
reply

A lil tidbit: 29, 249 days is over 80 years. (2 must be really patient to put up with that incessant chatter and bad jokes for that long. )
reply

In these few minutes I cared more about these 2 robots than I did for Rey or Fin or Poe or Kylo in all 3 recent star wars train wrecks
reply

FUN FACT: the robot used this animation is character asset from a defunct game called Paragon. The robots name is Grim. exe.
reply

OMG this was depressing as hell. Don't get me wrong, it was well done and great visuals, but the ending. gah! Poor One and Two! : -(
reply

Technically top notch.
Audience are emotionally sucked into the Two Characters.
But the ending is not convincing.

reply

Excellent. As always from Dust. Beautifully done. And this was a student's work Must book that name in for the future.
reply

Why were they at the sun, what Were they dooomed the entire time, or were they on a mission there to do something important
reply

great! does he have feelings or not is she a bit mad or a bit evil or not despite that. it shows, just how any mission can go wrong.
reply

I used to watch these because it felt like an experience. Now it's just a masochistic few minutes that tick me off.
reply

This was a lot to unpack in so short a time. Quite a lot to think about, when so little implies so many possibilities.
reply

I never understood what was going on because I couldn't hear the voice well enough to tell what it was saying.
reply

Tightly packed but damn good. It is increasingly rare to find such gems on dust. A lot of mediocrity.
reply

0: 53. It should be: It's 3500 Kelvin. The term degrees for Kelvin temperature was dropped in 1967.
reply

what friendship a. i. don't have emotions or friendships or feelings - they are machines run by code.
reply

I never understood a single word the ship was saying. totally lost any sense of what this was about.
reply

Great film! What a sad story. Excellent work to make a pair of robots such sympathetic characters.
reply

Only thing - our sun is white not yellow. But it definitely wouldn't look as pretty as it did here.
reply

nice good but idiotic noise of the sun was so 1920's Flash gordon, so spoilt it - no noise in space!
reply

The robot look and sigh when she sent him to the wrong airlock again made this whole short.
reply

thanks for showing this short. i enjoyed it
thanks to the students involved in making it

reply

Do you know any similar short animated movie About some kind of mission on the sun too
reply

Crazy how nobody realises that's the Grim. EXE model from the game Paragon
reply

No AI is ever going to be programmed to speak English with a thick foreign accent
