What killed the steam machine?

Steam Machines were all the rage in PC gaming for a minute. Do they still have a future? It doesn't look likely. Let's take a look at why Florian: As a Linux user, I'm really fond of steam machines because Valve invested a lot of money into things like Steam Play, Proton and DXVK. Without Steam Machines I wouldn't be able to run Witcher 3 (glitchless) on my Linux OS. Even though they were a commercial failure, it helped push Linux gaming forward and that it's all that matters for me. The amount of non-Linux games you can play grew exponentially in a matter of 3 years and it keeps getting better. The fact that Valve still pumps money into Steam Play means that they didn't give up entirely on the Steam Machine idea at all.

I think it was a good try, it has a very interesting joypad, steam can be a ferocious competitor with sony and ms, but can't have 2 shoes in 1 foot. If you make a console, you have to guarantee playability in the years, at least 5. And i don't think the hardware was so powerfull to play 2019/2020 games. And i think it wasn't the time to propose a thing like that. Now that xbox and ps are digital, it's time to present a steam console, maybe at 299 because imho pc for gaming will stop.

I believe the more competition the better for gaming in general... For the better part of twenty years now we've had Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo for our console gaming that's it, nothing else!!! We need another console to come along to help motivate the big 3 if nothing else!!! PC gaming is, not a solution for many of us gamers and, don't even get me started on indie games!!!

Problem with the steam machine was it's not as good as what I already have, Why would I install an Os on my hardware that limit's the number of games I can install, No origen, no battle net not even all of steam games work on it...Was doomed from the start imho.

I think Steam OS was a backup plan as Microsoft at the time was talking about closing their ecosystem...
And now that Microsoft is doing so once again, and a leader of that closure is now leading Microsoft, that the Deck popped up isn't surprising.

I bought an alpha as my first gaming desktop since my parents would only let me get a super small form factor pc. I loved that thing. It's my NAS these days but I'm never going to get rid of that little beauty

If they tried again but this time as a mini pc not only gaming focused and with the same specs as the steam deck with its apu at similar price with todays overpriced gpus I would consider buying that.

i know how to make a sream machine get a aleinware/phycho or what ever it is called laptop connect a steam controller plug in the hdmi boot up big screen mode then close the lid and there we go

Note: SteamOS is free.
So if they ever cut the cord or give up truly, you can move to a different distro smoothly and easily.

I-ve been using my steam machine every day for the last 3 years I don-t see the problem. I don-t even own the alpha version.
