Why is ping so important for online gaming?

What is ping? How does it affect playing games? Can you lower your ping? Let's dive in Zane: i live in montana and im usually on 100+ ping. The only good servers for me are seattle and las vergas, the majority of the time i am playing on 120-160 ping. Then for EU lobbies it only goes up by another 40-60ms making it 160 or 220 ping. I dont understand how if ping is distance then why is my connection to NA servers equally as shitty to my connection toward japanese servers or eu servers

thats why sometimes you shoot someone at call of duty exactly when he running to hide behind the wall in for some reason you killing him even when you missed most of the shot to the wall

the term ping is reference to ping pong i send you packet called ping and i wait for it to come back to me just like in ping pong
