Game length vs game quality
video description
My most recent example is Immortals Fenyx Rising
At first I was really sold on it. I refused to use the far sight ability to scout out every little place there was to explore. The prologue is linear and it was good. You are allowed to do the little extra places after a couple main quests. I just explored on my own and it was great not having to have my hand held by knowing where every side task was.
Past the prologue the game opens up completely and you have full ability to go anywhere.
I started in The Valley of Eternal Spring. I ignored the main mission. I followed the roads to find every side mission. I explored everything and it was great. Missions could be monotonous but I was sold on the atmosphere, the Greek mythology, and the satirical nature of the game.
But after clearing Aphrodite-s missions and that entire region, the game fell apart.
Difficulty progresses the wrong way. As you progress, enemies just have health and damage increased. I played on nightmare mode just because the combat is way too easy otherwise. After a certain point it just made the combat be so boring. The increase in health and also numbers of enemies didn-t make for more interesting situations, it only served to slow down my progress tremendously as I had to spend 5 or more minutes per fight in multiple fights on the way to every task. Turning down the difficulty wasn-t an option either. Because even turning it down one level would make your character so much more powerful that you felt like your demigod character was an actual God. Just walking in and smashing enemies within 30 seconds. So the main bad part of that difficulty increase is that it really incentivized me to want to use the scout ability and then just fly over all my enemies on a mission to just complete tasks.
And at that point, the game was broken for me. Combat was either a bore or way to time consuming. Tasks didn-t feel rewarding anymore. And the world wasn-t worth exploring anymore. It felt unlived in and empty.
And that-s where I-m currently sitting. Unfinished. About two thirds through. I put the game down and I don-t feel like it-s worth picking it back up

Thats actually a very interesting topic. To this day I can't completely explain why I had a blast playing Andromeda for 130 hrs despite knowing how inferior it was to the previous trilogy. Most of the quests were just ok, the characters were mediocre, there was a lot of filler stuff in the world but damn, I just loved to go there every night and get absorved by the game loop. Sometimes I just take games like real life. Some places are more exciting then others for some and not every place or character needs to be a superstar.

Open world games have slow progression due to the many side quests. Further more, open world games consist of usually a weak main story if any LOL and the traditional filler content (to artificially increase the length of the game). Therefore I prefer linear games as I want fast story development. Open world games go on ...... forever and therefore seem (to me) boring as Hell! In general, adults prefer story driven experiences while kids prefer open world exploration.....

It depends on a genre really. I don't expect a metroidvania, a survival horror or an adventure game to be over 10 hours long to beat. But if I get a 20 hour long soulslike, then I feel it could have been much longer, because Dark Souls set my expectations at a 40-50 hour mark. But overall, game lenght is not as important as game quality. There are many open world games that are just inflating the game length with boring side content. I don't want my game to waste my time.

I like how the the Videogame industey changed in this way. In the last 10 years you got so much more for your money. In the Ps3 Times you had for the most of the games paid 60 euros, bit still finished them in one afternoon. 8 hour REAL STORY without Sidequest was really Rare. Except games like fallout 3. Really makes me happy that you have not to pay houndreds of bugs to have something to pay for a month. Now 1-2 Games each month are working fine.

Quality over quantity, always. Most of the time I tend to prefer shorter games, I can think of maybe 3 games in the recent 7 years that've held my attention for more than 20 hours. Usually the breaking point is at around 12-15 hours. I don't worry too much about cost, it takes me around four hours to earn 60- so to me time is of more value. Shorter games usually respect my time better and therefore are better experiences

I think there needs to be a happy balance, but sometimes I love just grinding for no reason, if the mechanics are good. Put on music, and just melt, doing repetitive whatever. Sometimes I want a really deep game, even if it's relatively short.
I will say that any game that's less than 10 hours needs to be at a $15-$30 price range, not the full $60.

15-20 hours is the sweet spot. Anything less will be completed in 3-5 sittings. I generally play games in 1-2 hour bursts so games that are 15-20 hours last me 2-3 weeks. And usually by then another game comes out.
I dont generally beat long games. Persona 5 is the only exception because it really drew me in. And that took me like 3 months I think

It almost ends up being two ends of the same spectrum. I'm an RPG lover, so length is more likely to catch my attention but it has to have some quality (xenoblade for the win) but I also love little indie experiences, I just don't want to be charged $60 for a game that is only 10 hours long even with my terrible way of fumbling through things.

Quality over quantity every time. Games like Undertale can be beat in like 4 hours or whatever and still leave a lasting impression. I would much rather play a masterpiece game like Resident evil or Undertale than a bare bones openworld game that takes ages to beat ie Assassin's creed or ghost recon
