10 video game graphics that still blow us away

Admittedly I just got finished playing Return to Arkham Asylum (only ever played the demo and wanted to play through all of them before giving Gotham Knights a try. I have to say - despite the really beefy and old character models - it still holds up decently even without modern lighting and stuff. But, seeing Gordon beefed up and with hands the size of a truck I couldn't help but laugh!

Been thinking a lot lately what the gaming industry would look like if 1080p became the standard instead of the almost instant leap to 4K. Gameplay, performance, innovation, and release schedules have all suffered. Where a studio often releases a title once a console generation, twice if they re lucky. Makes me wonder how many 1000s of resource hours are spent optimizing systems to swing above their weight class. I m sick of graphics being the only gd thing that ever improves in games. I m sick of these games being released in near broken state only for a day one patch to exist to overwrite the software on the disc. I m sick of games taking hours to download/update because they re 100+ GB. I m sick of all these AAA games feeling the same because their bloated budget demands it to return the most profit.

I've only just stopped playing Arkham Knight, after 2 hours of total gameplay. I hate it so much! It still feels like a tutorial. Is this ever going to end? I can't do anything the way I want to, and I can't take anymore. I want to go that way, but I have to scan the area for enemies this way instead; then I want to move a body out of the way, but now I can't do it (I'm quite sure I could last time I played. In the story, I've only just found out about the existence of the Arkham Knight and I must absolutely take out five guards before reaching some terminal in a booth. The thing is that all I've done till now (besides a ridiculous car puzzle-track to get to an aerial) is take down a few guards to reach some gimmicky gizmo the way the game wants me to.

#1 is definitely wrong. Sorry to say, the ONLY true option for #1 has to be, and likely always WILL be Skyrim. The game released in 2011, its over a DECADE old, and its STILL very damn good looking. Like it was designed for the xbox 360 and ps3, not even last gen graphics this is last LAST gen graphics, and its STILL stunning in so many ways! Its not perfect by any means, but skyrim was the sign of things to come. Absolutely nothing at the time came close to matching how visually stunning it was, and showed us what games might soon look like, and even now it still holds up.

Graphical breakthroughs don't happen every 6 months, despite what anybody might want to believe. Hell most of the engines used to build these games are STILL in use for games currently being released. There's only so much that can be done within the same framework, meaning they're obviously still going to look good compared to current stuff.

So I played a few games between PlayStation 5 and the series X that have been very graphically impressive
A couple standouts for me have been the demons Souls remake and The Last of Us remake
But no matter how much they blow me away, anytime I boot up Red Dead Redemption 2 I'm reminded how every piece of scenery in that game is the most gorgeous thing I've ever seen in a video game
It's hard to fathom things looking more realistic than that game does

I'd have said my number 1 was Beyond: Two Souls, it was a PS3 game that looked visually as good as any PS5 game that has been released so far and even better than most PS4 games, and when they remastered it for the PS4 it looked like it was advanced beyond PS4 and PS5 and almost looked like a PS6 game

Odyssey puts Origins to shame.
There are actually a few 360/PS3 games that hold up fairly well.
For me, Red Dead Redemption still looks great. Obviously not as good as RDR2, but for a 360 game it s still got some juice

Recently played Ryse son of rome on my Steam Deck as it was on a sale for 2 dollars. And holy moly was i blown away by the immense richness and quality even in a time when raytracing or RTX wasnt even a thing. Defently worth a try if you have a deck with decent yet enjoyable storyline and gameplay.

Call me crazy Jake but graphics make a huge difference! Something as mundane as a walking simulator can be badass if the graphics are awesome. Imagine plague tail requiem with crappy graphics, the gameplay would of kinda sucked lol but the complete package made it an incredible experience

I'd say from this era another couple stand out games were Deus Ex: Mankind Divided and Detroit: Become Human. Deus Ex kinda makes sense since it's the same studio as Tomb Raider, you get similar photo-realism and quality. Detroit follow's Quantic Dream's history of mocap photo-realism.

as an older guy playing games, 64last BD. I've been away from the xbox, but I just got the Xbox One and it's great,

You missed the last of us part 2, and if you can, add part 1 too, none of this games are even 10 years old, you should have talked about god of war 3 from 2010, metal gear solid 3 from 2004, uncharted 2 from 2008, etc, but you had to go to the safest route didn't you? LAME!

Hi, they are all great games I have 4 of them. Another game that should be on the list is Last Of Us, and Resident Evil Biohazard, and some car games like Gran Turismo, Need For Speed HEAT, there is to many to mention, anyway. Keep up the good work from Dave in Australia.

The Resident Evil remake for gamecube holds up pretty well. Sure it's static camera angles, but the character models still look darn good for such an old game and it still looks like they blend in with the realistic backgrounds.
If only the gameplay still held up.
