10 Unique Games Worth Spending 1000 Hours In Kalilak: My personal 10, 000 hour game is The Sims 2. No, not the recent ones, they don't run on my toaster and they aren't as easy to mod. I'm talking the older, now free (on PC) version that still has oodles of amazing custom content.
You want realism? There's downloads and default replacements for that. You want mermaids? You can find that. Aliens? We've even figured out how to default-replace the sky box and the NPC vehicles.
Feel like you need new/different goals to work towards? There's a bunch of really interesting game challenges floating around online to try out in your own game (The Asylum Challenge was pretty popular for a while.
Special mention to Sun & Moon's Star Factory for the on-going production of the most amazing interconnected mods I've ever seen for the Sims 2. You can now hunt wild game. And butcher it. You can have chickens that lay eggs. Or grow and produce your own spices. Or grow reeds and then craft them into increasingly large and elaborate custom objects. It's SO cool.
Ok, technically a good 70% of that time is spent finding and downloading and organizing WAY TOO MUCH custom content, but at this point I'm pretty sure that counts as part of the game for those of us still playing Sims 2. ;;; >. >

Why are game developers so obsessed with getting people to spend huge chunks of their lives playing games that are so massive with so much shit to do that it gets exhausting and even boring sometimes, especially when you have to complete menial tasks over and over again to collect enough materials to upgrade certain weapons, armor or character stats and abilities or when the side quests are all generic and repetitive (looking at you Skyrim. By the time I'm done with the game I almost never wanna play it again. Sometimes I just want to play a game with a really good short story and high replay value. I will never play an assassin's Creed game more than once. It also keeps developers from putting out new games because they're too busy adding mediocre content to existing games. We used to get a new GTA game every couple of years. Now it's been over 10 years since GTA 5 came out and we still don't have GTA 6 yet.

Stardew is NOT a relaxing game! Its actually stressful AF. Always running out of stamina and it feels like you have 5 seconds to do anything before you have to go to bed for the day or else you pass out and lose money. You can easily spend an entire in-game day trying to find the one person you want to talk to only to find them at the last second then you dont have the time to talk to them or else you pass out and lose money.
If you want a game like that that is actually relaxing go play a harvest moon. No time or stamina constraints. The only worry is if the shop is open or not. Otherwise there is no rush and no pressure on you.

Whoa, hold up, people didn't love Endwalker as much as previous expansions? Really? I think this is the first time since it released that I've heard anyone express any disappointment about it. I mean, I'm not hugely involved in the community (even though FFXIV is literally my favourite game of all time) but I've just seen universal praise. Well, I know some people think that Shadowbringers was better, but whenever they express that opinion it usually takes the form of 'Endwalker was absolutely, mindmeltingly awesome, but Shadowbringers was just a tiny bit more awesome'.

Todd Howard often talks about the Bethesda Magic when somebody asks what makes their open world games (Fallout, TES) special. The fact that you can go into any direction. while ignoring the mainstory and spend 50 hours having fun just doing what you want to do. thats unique. I dont know even a single other open world game with quests and rpg elements where you can do that.
Lets hope this company has a long future and sticks to their roots (unlike their competition.

Even after 5 years FFXIV is still a very nice and welcoming community.
I mean I personally love to pass time by just helping sprouts in dungeons and trails and raids.
(Have severely neglected crafting lol)
And bits and pieces of the story have its highs and lows like most games. But there isn't a single bad one. At all.
And the fact they took their horrendous first start and also made it apart to the story itself. Just makes it so damn badass lol

Since you mention Factorio, you should include to more: 1) Dyson Sphere Program - similar idea, but multi-planet intergalactic factories. The update they are working on called The Dark Fog looks incredible; 2) Satisfactory - think Factorio, but first person. I think I have racked up 460+ hours already. Great game, and continuous new content as they work to v1. 0. Update 8 will take it to Unreal Engine 5 too. I am excited about that.

For me a game i would sink countless hours in would be call of duty black ops 3 on steam, mainly because of the mods. I'm big into the COD zombies mode so having the base game for 2 campaigns, decent multiplayer and endless awesome zombies experiences and maps created by the community, or even the ones that come in the base game or chronicles DLC will surely keep me playing for a very long time

Alot of people dont really think of the Nioh series, specifically Nioh 2. You could spend 1000 hours in that game, especially if you have the DLC and can access the underworld portion of the game, where if you are into complex stats youll have alot of fun optimizing builds to take down the end game content. Nevermind mastery of all 14 weapon types, countless armor sets with different abilities etc.

I'm playing FFXIV for 8 years now. Started with the Heavensward expansion and love this game so much: D
The comment about that ppl don't like the current expansion (ENDWALKER) not so much.
Well. Idk where you got that information but the ppl I know and many of the european community love ENDWALKER. For some it's not better than SHADOWBRINGER the previous one but they still love it.

Younger gamers find it hard to believe when I tell them I have put between 40. 000-50. 000 hours in Diablo 1, Diablo 2 and Diablo 3 combined.
Such is the case when you discover Diablo 1 as a 12 year old, and never stop.
As a soon to be 40 year old, I am honestly so excited about June 6th (my birthday) and the launch of Diablo 4. Hope I get to put another 5000-10. 000 hours in!

stardew took harvest moon and made it better. Factorio reminds me of time machine for some reason. Im playing grim dawn, last of us, shadow of war till diablo 4 comes out: ) POE is not a game that respects your time. Having to copy or fail a build without an easy way to respec without money or A LOT of grind is unacceptable. Play last epoch or grim dawn instead.

I'm a relatively new FFXIV player, but so far I can confirm that the community (at least on the AU data centre) is absolutely friendly and welcoming. Where players in other MMO games would boot you from a party for one minor mistake (or being too slow, FFXIV parties will happily wait for you to watch cutscenes, forgive your mistakes and offer friendly advice.

Being an old-school Runescape player I find it hard to enjoy games that you don't play like a full time job.
So Minecraft hardcore and 7 days to die hardcore are probably my two other games although I did do a month of fallout 4 survival mode and tried to do a you only live once run but got impatient and lost too much hp on early raids and random events.

You said the Tetris effect and I'd never heard that before lol. I always refer to it as Minecraft. I'm just gonna do a bit of mining turns into 6 hours of mining, or something similar. That was the first game I saw time vanish so quickly. Even when I grew up building custom skate parks in THPS I never lost time as quickly as going mining in Minecraft.
