Well.
You absolutely should have included World of Warcraft.
Sure some of the things were drastic quick changes but when they started introducing phasing the world or zones would change through quest progression. Buildings burned zones completely changed. If you were on the same quest your friend turns invisible.
Just playing it over time. Like years. Technology advancements.
I remember Ungoro Crater with dinosaurs and lush environments, was one of my favorites. THAN. Ungoro Crater had rain! Yeah they had focused on creating a more realistic environment and that was one of the first ones to change HOLY DRIP! That was amazing. Chilling out there in the zone. Watching Over your shoulder to make sure the TREXes didnt step on you. Because somehow they could sneak up on you. And slowly you can hear something. sound like a storm. Only thing missing is the smell. then you see it. rain clouds, sounds rain effects ambience. I don't recall exactly when but it had to have been around two thousand and seven. Maybe a smidge l earlier.
One of the most substantial and significant,
Goosebumps creating moments in all of gaming history from my recollection as A42-year-old who's Gamed pretty much my entire life.
That and when far cry, finally perfected the flame thrower.
But yeah, the phasing and even how an expansion like the cataclysm would alter the world completely. I know it was kind of all at once but it did kind of go slowly overtime and like I said again the phasing. Who you didn't mention fable either. I'm pretty sure that was a slow change. I don't know. I played a few of them, but that's where's the round the same time I played world warcraft, so it may have faded from memory into Mandela

A minor example could be Warframe. There are certain major quests which will permanently alter the layout and designs of most, if not all, levels, particularly open-world ones. The most clear example is The New War, which completely modifies the lanscape in Plains of Eidolon and Orb Vallis, and adds some new details on more linear maps. However, those quests only affect the host, so to speak, so going on a mission with a party leader who, for some reason, hasn't run those quests yet, will result in you playing on an older version of those same landscapes; and it works both ways: a newer player having you as a party leader will have those changed spoiled for them.

Civilization 2 from 1996 did this change of world thing too! If you were too industrious/nuclear, the pollution would literally cause the seas to rise. Cities built on coasts would be lost if the level rose too much, and you could use it as a game mechanic to affect your enemies who built on islands or too close to water. Civ 6 brought that feature back, but to a limited degree where you couldn't lose too much land, but would affect coastal and flood plains areas a lot!

Elder Scrolls Online.
As you progress though the main story:
Save cities can turn into battlefields.
Battlefields can turn into save cities and hubs.
There are plenty of dream world/vision of the past quests too, that re-use the architecture.
While it is pretty basic, this does happen in a MMO - so the difference is all the more striking.
There is no I already freed all the prisioners situation in this game.

Mega Man X6 has the Nightmare system, where after the first stage you clear others get altered with a nightmare effect based on the last boss you defeated. Each stage is only influenced by specific other stages, but every main stage has at least two others that alter it, and some of those nightmare effects are necessary to being able to get access to certain side areas.

I thought we are talking about Ocarina of Time-like mechanics.
3: 55 This guy has Anisocoria.
9: 32 AAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHH!
23: 54 Why didn't you show the PS1, GBA, or Japanese version of the title screen of FFVI The American SNES title is wrong.
24: 09 FFIII was on the NES not SNES.
If you included FFVI you should have included Ocarina of Time.

Honorable Mention to Kinggath's Sim Settlements 2 mod for Fallout 4. As you progress through the mod the town of Concord gets built up, more settlers arrive, and more of the boarded up homes open up as settler homes to visit. In fact, you begin running into more and more interesting side characters in the world at large the more you progress.

I know this would probably count as screen goes black and everything changes, but for me the first time experiencing a changed game world was Link to the Past 30 years ago. In retrospect the dark world map seems like a standard game trope, but at the time it blew my entire mind. Really expanded the whole notion of what a video game could be

I know this isn't exactly the same deal, but the some of the 'levolutions' from Battlefield 4 were fantastic regarding map changes. Most were pretty tame but you have maps like Flood Zone, Paracel Storm and Lancang Dam that completely changed how how you engaged in combat when these events were activated.

I remember in Jak 2 when the metal heads took over the city, and I was sitting there thinking, if I beat the game, everything would go back to normal. nope, it got worse. And to add an extra kick in the nuts. By the time Jak 3 hit, the city somehow got ever worse than the ending of Jak 2.

I was really hoping for The Planet Crafter to show up, because the game was so fcking satifying to land on this mars like planet and to transfom it completely. Achivements like getting water on the planet, rain and at the end even mammals. Still a really nice list

Prototype 1 and 2 were such comfort games, just because of the ability and freedom to just run around, cause mayhem, and get better while you do it no problem. I know it won't happen, but I really wish there was a prototype 3. Also, I really enjoyed both stories

Soul Blazer and Terranigma whole gimmick was Definitely changing the world which was neat. Bahamut Lagoon did something amazing as you could effect terrains like fire attacks burning trees, destroy bridges, freeze rivers. Really made an effort with strategy RPG.

Having played videogames on all consoles and PC for the last 22years, in my mind FF6 is rank 1. All others go down one rank. I have played all ports of it, because of the great story and good gameplay. I cant mentally handle it's only a bonus mention on this list!

an upcoming game where the world changes quickly is monster hunter wilds, the map will change between harsh, vibrant and full of life, and the normal version
each will have different types of life and monsters, hazards and advantages and so on

You left one of the best examples for world changing system in a videogame and that is Fable 2. it's amazing seeing what you did, actually made a huge difference to the world around you, not to mention the family you can have and watch you them grow up.

I'll never forgive EA for shutting down Pandemic Studios. They didn't make a single bad game. Maybe some were mediocre or under-rated but there was always something incredibly fun about even their most mediocre games and Saboteur was no exception.
reply

Does Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood count You can optionally spend a lot of time destroying Borgia towers, unlocking the ability to bring back businesses and turn the areas from being depressing into actually looking like a decent place to live.
reply

you missed Freedom Fighters. It was the first game i ever noticed world change. After the original invasion of NYC the game progresses through the seasons. Not only that you character cloths get more and more tore up and his beard grows longer.
reply

I didn't expect to see FFVI on the list as a bonus mention due to the early disclaimer. Glad you mentioned the Final Fantasy series and how they do that a lot in the earlier releases of the franchise. Happened in the original FFVII as well.
