This ending shocked me as a kid but I found out years (decades) later that I misinterpreted it. The ending to Phantasy Star 2, so it ends with you having saved your solar system (not Earths system) but your characters get surrounded by high tech humans (turn out to be earthlings trying to invade your system, your characters say one final catchphrase and it fades to black. Now I thought this was a last stand and all your characters get killed, having saved their solar system but don't get to enjoy it. But apparently the consensus is the game just has no ending, that the fade to black is incomplete, a development flaw. I played this game as a young kid in '92 or '93 and I didn't find out about this other idea about the ending until just a few years ago.
Now I think on it, I guess it's shocking either way.

for the ending of rdr1, you kinda understand why this happens at the end in the epilogue of rdr2, spoilet alert.

Marston gets a loan for the Beecher's Hope land from the bank, it's clearly implied that the bank owns Marston now, and the government owns the bank. When Marston first gets to Beecher's Hope, there's only a small rundown shack and he works his ass off to build it into a ranch diving deeper into debts with the bank, ultimately he turns Beecher's Hope into a possible income for the government, so now the government owns Marston and wants the land, making Marston a disposable tool in the eyes of the Pinkertons, and that's exactly what they do, dispose of him.

I'm pretty sure in Red Dead Redemption that Ross basically needed to take out the entire Van Der Linde Gang. John was the only one with a family so he used them to force John to take out everyone else, then killed John to tie up the last loose end. Can't have it leaking that the Pinkertons/FBI took a reformed man's family hostage, then forced him to hunt down all his friends under threat of his family being killed. The people would go crazy.

Its seriously a true crime for EA to take dead space, force all these changes not one fan wanted or asked for, then have the actual ending locked behind a DLC paywall to only end it on a huge cliffhanger. Then have the AUDACITY to shut the studio down afterwards cause people didn't like the changes which again were the changes that they themselves forced the studio to make! So many years later and I'm still raging over it.

no it's not the best ending sacrificing yourself. it says she wants to die, wants the freedom from her burdens. basically if you save her you go against her wishes in order to satisfy your own self, meaning you're not doing it for her you're doing it for yourself, to give yourself the title of the good guy when you're basically not. it makes you selfish and full of yourself.

How does the ending of any Red Dead Redemption game come out of nowhere EVERYONE knows how it ends before they even start the game. It's in the name of the game! Even if you didn't get it from the start, it's oozing from the pores of every mission and interaction.
You don't get to escape from what you've done. Everyone gets what's coming to them.

For number 8, if you've watched Godfather movies, you know that dons get shot, traitors get shot, and those who survive, their children got shot. If you've watched any gangster movies before that, you know that crimes don't pay, and criminals are mostly maniacs and cowards, seldom good men trapped in bad situations.

The only ratchet and clank game I know that ended with a downer is the one before a crack in time where clank is kidnapped by the zoni after they've just finished dealing with the ungrateful little st that forced all the lombaxes to run from his insatiable family (someone remind me the name of that one please)

It's been so long since I played it but i think her name was Lucy from Assassin's Creed 1 or 2 when we find out she was a Templar. I was a kid and never knew betrayal up until that point
Also, BioShock, would you kindly. I played that for the first time a few years ago and was gobsmacked

The original MW ending still hits hard. All your comrades die and as you’re airlifted away, you think Price is dead because the guy giving CPR is freaking out. His reveal in Gulag in MW2 was such a well done surprise. One of the rare times I cared about the characters in a CoD game

20: 28 Yeah I don't agree with that ending either like she shouldn't have died and that shouldn't have happened with her but alls well ends well I guess.
I really thought Cereza was immortal but never mind that my boy Dante's the only one that could survive that potentially.

SPOILERS for NIER AUTOMATA:
When 2B was killed by A2 you really wanted to hate her but when you consider was why 2B was killed it made sense, man i really wish i could erase that game from my memory and play it again for the first time, an absolute MASTERPIECE!

The first time I played Modern Warfare that ending happened so fast I didn’t even register at first that Gaz died. It was only on a second playthrough I started to clue in. I guess that shows you how effectively they conveyed Soap’s disorientation.

Legend of Zelda Twilight Princess.
After Midna transforms and reveals she is the true leader of the Shadow Realm.
And just a single tear of hers shatters the Twilight Mirror. Dooming her and Link from ever seeing each other again.

Commenter edition: PARIAH, an little-known Windows / OG XBOX shooter, read the wiki summary to see the ending, but if you can find the game to play don't spoil yourself. Sort of game GOG should get the rights to.

Fun fact, Mafia Definitive Edition added that cutscene at the end. As in the original game, it just ends with him getting out of prison. And in Mafia 2, you play a mission where you have to unalive Tommy

Conker's Bad Fur Day absolutely deserves to be on a list like this. It starts with a fourth wall breaking power fantasy that parodies Alien and The Matrix, and then reality sets in and it hits hard.
