Psi-Ops: The Mindgate Conspiracy.
Phenomenal gameplay that lets you play around with loads of incredible and brutal psychic powers. But the story is absolute garbage. It's barely there, and what little is shown is almost totally forgettable. You have this potential for a cool narrative about the mistreatment of psychics and their kind rising up against the military industrial complex. but instead the villains are all lacking any interesting motivation, save for maybe one of them, and the game tries to sequel bait with an MGS tier surprise, there's corruption afoot, yet nothing ever came of it since the game didn't do well enough to get a sequel. I remember reading years and years back that the guy who supposedly wrote the script sued Midway because they allegedly stole it, and I just can't imagine why anybody would want to say hey, I wrote that steaming garbage pile, give me credit!
Like sure, I can get the principle behind claiming ownership for your work, but when it was something as terrible as Psi-Ops, I'd be fine letting it stay a mystery who was responsible for that trainwreck.

Think my choice would be Mass Effect: Andromeda. I know it was busted on launch but after finally experiencing the main trilogy through LE a few years back, I had such a craving for more of this universe I dove straight into Andromeda following it.
Honestly the gameplay I think is awesome, all the abilities, skill trees, the fast paced nature with the jetpack, the vaults and all the puzzles they contained and even adding back the exploration style that ME1 aimed for. The story however is just meh, couple of new races in a whole new galaxy as big as Andromeda and cutting out so many past races. Plus the new crew and protagonist are just discounted from the level of the main trilogy and honestly never felt the emotional investment in it that I did with Shepard and his crew. I think if ME5 does ever reach us if it could harness the story telling and emotion of old with the faster pace and more diverse combat system of Andromeda. it would be epic

Monster Hunter story is that you are suppose to hold the balance of the nature, like in real life: If there are too many wolves out there, you hunt some of them to keep the balance, so the ecosystem doesn't collapse.
That big Zorah Magdaros ( walking volcano monster ) that is in the intro and the story point, is kind of a BIG deal, since a monster like that has not been recorded before, so panic, calculations and hunting happens. Then they found out that it was going to the graveyard of the elder monster, or whatever it was called. Then they find that something is drawing it towards this graveyard place and you find out that Xeno'jiiva is big and causes the world to be in chaos. Un-natural shit that you should fix. Or do you At the end you try your best, but why Natural order is the order that happens, not the one you cherish the most, right

I prefer gameplay over story.
I would play a game in a different language if I don't like the voice acting. Does Stellar Blade have Japanese dialogue I'd play it in that since it's very anime-like. I didn't like Zelda's English voice in BOTW.
You know, I never got around to playing Vanquish. I guess I got it for the game play.
Persona has pacing issues too. Parts feel longer than they should be.
You call Metroid Other M a good game The story made me laugh but I wasn't a huge fan of the gameplay.
18: 38 These people probably played Sonic games too. I don't think I finished Freedom Planet.
I think Konami might have ruined Metal Gear Solid 5. Wasn't it not properly finished

Have been awesome, if someone make a 3, 5d game like following:
A rhombus-shaped cube can probably be a four-dimensional cube viewed from a three-dimensional perspective.
Let me explain.
If we imagine a rhombus shaped hole in the ground,
in which we try to get a cube through, we all know it won't work, unless we make the cube rhombus.
But a four-dimensional cube can be rotated,
to another perspective, so that it (from our perspective) becomes rhombus shaped and thus gets through the rhombus shaped hole which (from the cube's perspective) is square shaped.
We can actually form a hyper cube, by using a cube and two rhombic cubes!
By the way, AWESOME video!

I feel like this just applies to a very big majority of mainstream games, it's a horrible practice, they put everything into gameplay because it's addicting and dopamine inducing which boosts sales, but then the story which is honestly where the true art lies for us, is just half baked. The only game I was genuinely shocked by the story because of how insanely good it was was Alan Wake II, I don't think we'll ever get a story that good from any other company other than Remedy for a long time. I'm the type of person that really likes picking apart stories and seeing deeper meaning, searching for easter eggs, foreshadowing, and subliminal messaging, but in these games there is none.

Damn, it's incredibly sad that Metroid Other M had potential, it could have delved into the actual traumas of Samus, the recent loss of the Metroid Larva to Mother Brain, exploring Zebes, her adopted homeworld, in ruins, and make her even more badass than the sum of her games but didn't. Fusion gave us glimpes of her head during the elevator sequences but then Adam, who was the very definition of an absolute dick just comes in to call the shots. They had it in there, Samus couldn't access her powerups because she was not right in her head. NOPE this dude who was your commander and mentor knows better than you and you gonna obey.

It's unfortunate for Stellar Blade to have such poor quality storytelling, because the story in itself is actually pretty amazing and compelling. There are some videos that make good summaries of the entire lore and it's actually very solid, the concept of humanity evolving into two different kinds of living beings by the hand of one individual and having them fight it out in a brutal and violent war for supremacy has so much potential. They have a ton of material to tell an incredible story, I really hope they nail the delivery in the sequel.

Glad people are saying world’s story was trash. I’m very worried about capcom doubling down with wilds and wanting more of that Sonylast of us/god of war audience, and putting so much focus on cinematics over gameplay. The last thing MH needs is story. Lore yes. Story no. Even tho 4 DID have a story and it’s better than world. I loathe how world was seen as the 1st MH with story. And that it’s seen as good. Rise was worse. Wilds’ story seems blah so far.

gears tactics
probably the best xcomlike on the market
but the story is just horrid and the characters all want to make me make them run into overwatch
there is also a lootbox (tho no money just reward gambling) equipment part that makes pre battle setup pure misery
kinda sad they came so close to greatness, actually bringing innovation to the genre
and then ruined it with modern

Hit the nail on the head on MGSV. It has by far the best gameplay of the series but ended up being my least favorite by a wide margin. It doesn’t even feel like an MGS game due to the nonsensical story, characters that act nothing like they did in past iterations, and plot points that never resolve. It feels like the game had no purpose in the rest of the series besides being fun.

Star Ocean is a good example. From the twist in 3 to some of the lazy story telling in 4 and 5, all of the games post 2 can be said to have terrible stories, but they've always been carried by the excellent combat system, the novel battle trophy system, the bonus dungeons, and usually the item crafting system. The item crafting isn't always well balanced. Some games do it better than others.

This might an unpopular opinion but i think control should be on this list. The gameplay was great, crazy graphics and art direction as well. But i just didn't give a shit about Jesse or her brother. Its a shame cause the premise and world building is great. Just that the main storyline is kinda boring. I forgot most of the story a few days after completing it.

Ah, I was gonna go nuts but the thing with MGS5 is that most of the story is buried in the cassette tapes - which you can listen to while playing the game, just have them running in the background and Ocelot and Miller will explain what the F is going on. It's not disappointing, they made it optional. If you don't want story just listen to Billy Idol instead.

I wanted to jump to MGS's defence and say the story is awesome, but you make a valid point. It did feel lacklustre - particularly Skullface's character. They could have done so much more with that but they didn't. Having played MGS1-3 I was eagerly anticipating awesome things with 4 (meh) and then bigger and better things with 5 (less meh, but still meh.

Can't agree more for Metroid Other M. It's definitely not the best Metroid game, but for the Wii it had some amazing ideas and for the most part felt great to play. You just skipped every cutscene you could so you didnt have to listen to everyone whining. (The bit about the Ridley clone evolving was kind of a cool idea, though)

I loved Midnight Suns though. It's so much fun, and the dialogue is very detailed and comic-related, which is great as well. The main story was awesome enough that I had to catch my breath after it was all done. I won't spoil too much, but they really built up an emotioanl ending in a surprising way.

Absolutely disagree with opinion that Stellar Blade doesn’t have a story. It’s not rushed and not cliche. Sorry, I just disagree. Cheesy dialogue, yes, but I think that’s part of its charm. But there is a story here about Eve’s coming to terms with what it means to be human and to have autonomy.

I'm surprised Shadow of Mordor didn't at least have an honorable mention. Some of the most fun gameplay imo and the Nemesis system paired with LOTR was just perfect. But the story was pretty mid and the characters were not the most enjoyable. Shadow of War I think came to a closer balance between the two.

Stellar Blade story has a lot to do with religion, spirituality, alchemy and philosophy. Armoured Core is based on Alchemy too. They're excellent stories, it touches on a human element of inspiration that personifies human origins. It's cringe to hear how humans don't care about their own origins.
