You certainly can, but realize it sends a different message to your audience. Talking to a camera usually feels more scripted, like a commercial. Whereas off-camera often feels more real, because it reminds viewers of a news interview.
Rules can be broken to achieve goals, though: When Errol Morris directed Fog of War, he used a teleprompter-like device, so his interview subjects saw him, but actually looked into the lens. He wanted the audience to feel like part of the conversation.

I suspect the big advantage of shooting in the Geurilla challenge is the noteriety and marketability of your name. your name will go further in such a publicly marketed and known campaign than it would in another contest for the same money. Even not winning the contest, your video will probably get more viewership and open your name to more people.

Thanks for all the feedback about potential live show broadcast times! To accomodate all of our global viewers, I'll probably try to do two episodes. (It'd be a shame to do all the prep work and only present it once, plus it'll be fun to see how different each version is) And of course, a live show would also be available to replay afterward.

Dear Fellow videographers,
I have one question. I need to shoot a commercial this weekend for a politician. It will be a 30 seconds message to the voters. Should she be placed on the rule of third marks in my shot? And should she look directly in the camara or should she looks away from the camara? Thank you.

It has been a long time since I watched this show, though I kept in my subscription. However, I plan on tuning back into Indy Mogul on a regular basis now. I am incredibly impressed with your presentation and professional approach. Congratulations on roping me back in!

I am actually making a documentary. Sort of like Jackass, but clearly different. Wee will be destroying an abandoned house in the woods. We will be rolling on fire, pranks in public and More. Also, I thought that contest should be done more often, good idea.

owali92 In case Griffin doesn't respond: the 60d is more suited for video as it has the audio controls and swivel screen. The sensor is the same on both cameras so the video quality will be the same. Hope this helps.

this was in chicago on damen milwaukee and north!
thanks for the documentary information. more is welcomed! live shows are pretty difficult because prerecorded shows can be watched when ever we have time to.

The documentary filmmaking tips were just fantastic Griffin! I already knew about the rule of thirds, however the Nat sound and the B-roll stuff was great help, it makes documentary filmmaking look so easy.

You won't catch me entering a 48 hour film contest. I would rather take my time and produce something that's worth while, as opposed to making it good enough to win, but fast enough to enter.

I'm sure this has been answered 8 billion times but what editing software does Griffin use? I'll ask the fans because I'm sure someone can help me before he can answer! Thank you!

I had a news broadcast production class & a basic video class this semester and I definitely just learned more in you 7 minute video than I did this whole semester. So clearly explained.

Yep, perfect answer! A lot of times, for handheld shots, I focus on a point on the ground a few feet away, and know how far I should keep my camera from a moving subject.

i think it is a good exercise yes: ) but like you said, there are FREE one, so in my opinion no, it is a complete waste of time, money, and is a complete rip off!

Super helpful info on Documentary making. I wish I had grant money to hire you as a consultant/editor/whatever title you want. Thanks for sharing the info.

From my experience, the two are fairly comparable, and because of that, since you are already so well versed in Vegas Pro, just keep using it.

Good tips: )
The difference between a pure sang amateur project and a pretty good looking project tends to be little things like these.

I think the live show should be on sunday in the evening around 4: 00-5: 00. I think that would get the most people available

From FCPX? There's a Share menu with lots of options. (I use one of my Compressor settings to export to H. 264)
