For the indoors filming issue: Don't be shy, KNOCK ON PEOPLE'S DOORS and ask. I just co-directed a short film for a 48-hour contest held by the Guanajuato International Film Festival and won. Our crew paid several visits to the city and literally asked for indoor locations by asking people straight forward if we could use their houses as sets, and most of them kindly complied once we explained it was for a short film. I've never been to NJ or met anyone from there but it can't hurt to ask

I was working sound and the boom mic at a location shoot for a Civil War short and one of the actors was a kid, maybe nine years old. As kids get, this one was particularly antsy. While he remembered his lines very well, he would not sit still and his volume varied quite spectacularly between shots. No consistency at all. I'm incredibly grateful to not have been the one that edited that because getting continuity would have been a nightmare. I thought it turned out pretty good though.

I'm in the same boat right now, working with people I barely know who thought it'd just be something fun to do. Of course, their acting skills aren't that great, and it's the first time I've worked with a young kid since the script called for it. It's a very interesting experience to say the least. I had around 30 people who signed up to be a part of the video. So far? I've got 6 people -- and two are people I found last minute who didn't even know about the video til I brought it up.

I appreciate you sharing your older stuff that most likely got you as good as you are today. I have a lot of that kind of material when i was in middle school etc. and it's terrible (Because we were kids) I can empathize with you about being aprehensive to share it. Although for me, if you look past the terrible-ness, and just take in to account it's because we're young, it makes for some great memories and moments. Although there's still some stuff I won't show for a very long time!

For film locations on the cheap or for free i suggest getting associated with a film program at school because then you can end up filming for free there of you can always go to location scooting sites like filmla or locoscout I suggest the last one because i used them and the work great for locations and usually give discounts to students (like me) but then again i am from LA so idk how well they will work everywhere else
Go GORILLA!

OK on my current project we wanted a fresh face, so used a girl from my bros work. She wasn't horrendous but just spoke too fast.
I literally couldn't get her to slow down. Tried telling her to go at half speed ha. Obviously you don't speak that quickly in real life, so the performance in general suffered and devalues the production as a whole.
I have actually slowed her down in post by 5%! No idea what to do in that situation tbh

My worst experience is with actors who do not show up or say they are gonna show up then don't. Usually I find work arounds like I call in another actor or in the beginning I would book multiple actors for different days and get them to come in. the worst one was I was shooting a short for school and the actor showed up one day but not the other so all of the other shots were scrapped and I reshot the whole thing in one day.

I was surprised they thought you were stealing their group. How was your approach. Did you tell them they would have a piece for their reel. You could offer to shoot some video for the theater group as an exchange. Have you tried talent agencies. They might be interested so their newer talent would have more pieces for their reel. You have to sell yourself. I know it's hard but keep trying.

there is a site call meetup. com where you can join groups by interests. If you search for acting in your city or in a big city close by you might find a lot of contacts. I helped and got help from a meetup group in Toronto called AWF Productions. (I live about 1 hour and al half away from Toronto. Every meetup group has their own rules but it's worth to try.

my worst experience with actors was getting the initial shots with them and then spending a year on other parts of the needed elements/footage then coming back a year later to find some of the crucial sets had been changed to the extent that we couldnt finish the project

hey, a great opportunity to find actors, and workspace and equipment is to take video&film if your school offers it, I joined the after school club and got to know the people fairly well, we made some seriously bad videos, but they were just for the fun of it.

My best friend and main actor constantly sighs, like the loud, annoying kind that you can't edit around. He also could not get the idea of continuity costumes when we filmed for two days in a row so we had to redo almost three hours of filming all over again.

you could get the canon t3 with a lens (although it only has 720p and lacks a mic input.
Or you could get a canon t3i without a lens (this has a tilting screen, 1080p mode, mic input, and a couple other notable upgrades from the t3)

For locations: if you are in school (or not but near a college and willing to tell a little tiny white lie) just tell them you're a student working on a project and you need to film indoors. They may be able to supply a good location

The worst time I had with an actor was this kid that could not get up when he was laying down ( I make war movies so all the actors where laying prone) without sitting then rocking a few times to get up: D
