Griffin will we ever get en episode about learning your camera's settings and remembering to read the instruction booklets? I mean, sometimes, even with an Alexa or RED Epic, some settings will give you crappy, grainy, muddy unusable shots, in low light as well as broad daylight during the fricken' Summer: ( I hope to see something like this someday. In my opinion, the list of important things to worry about is actually this: Get your camera. Learn your camera/Use right settings. Lens. Audio.

Even if you broadcast video in standard definition, it makes sense to shoot/edit/export in HD. (Someday if they upgrade, you'll have a nice archive of HD content) After you export in HD (let's say it's 1280x720, use conversion software (I use Apple Compressor) to:
1) Crop the video to a 4x3 aspect ratio. That means 960x720. (Or, cut 160 pixels from the left, and 160 from the right) This'll get rid of black bars.
2) Then, resize to 720x480. (SD pixels are slightly taller than wide)

I've been very disappointed with Red Giant/Pluraleyes and their customer support. I ordered Pluraleyes in a promotional combination with my Rode Videomic Pro back in early December. Unfortunately, they are really good at advertising Pluraleyes 3, but not so much at the fact that it's only currently compatible Mac. So. I didn't mind so much, considering they said it would be available before 2013, but now it's nearly March and nothing more then a not so reassuring soon.

5 years later than when this video was done why hasn't ZOOM or some one made a device that will sync the pause button on the various Zoom Recorders (H4n in my case) with the on and off of the record button on video cameras (XA-30 & T5i in my case? Seems like a very logical and would be a god send to any one using the Zoom Recorders. Please Zoom hear me.
p. s. Premiere Pro now has the audio sync feature too.

It sure helps. Animators are probably more conscious of this issue because we have no control over sound. Dialogue is pre-recorded and compiled with storyboards and temporary sound effects to create the animatic. Animators work off that to create the performance, so we must be very aware of the timing, especially for dialogue. Sound effects can be moved around, but the voice actors' performance is locked in.

I work on large documentary projects with at least 3 cameras and an audio recorder running at almost all times. I've tried dumping the whole 16+ hours of audio and video into my timeline and let PluralEyes 1 try and sync it up. It doesn't work well at all, for some reason the clips don't sync well and it takes forever. I just sync up individual scenes as I edit them and that works great.

How would you approach shooting video of a live ballet with a single camera? I already plan on attending all three performances, as well as dress rehearsals (to get my camera settings ironed out. I don't know if the music will be live or recorded. If live, I'll be dropping a Zoom mic into the orchestra pit during at least one performance. Any ideas would be appreciated.

One thing you forgot to mention, is make sure your external audio recorder is set to 48khz not 41. 0khz. Its a pain in the ass the sync if you don't get that right, especially longer clips. And plural eyes will fail. I learned that one the hard way. At 41. KHz I noticed that even though I get the begining lined up perfectly, further on it will drift.

The H1 is around $100. Thats about as cheap as you're gonna find one thats decent. You might be able to get a used one for slightly cheaper. I got my H4n for $150 (normally around $300) but that was cuz a musician buddy of mine sold me his cuz he didn't use it much and was moving back to Nashville (Quick cash, lightening the packing load, ect)

If you don't like PluralEyes, you should try Woowave (woowave[dot]com. It's basically PluralEyes, but it doesn't show you the animated timeline - so it's undoutabely faster. And it's only $99 instead of the $199.

I'm not affiliated with Woowave. I really enjoy their product. It helps me get my work done, fast.

This is actually a really good idea considering that information is stored. As long as it asks you to verify if both devices are correctly set, then this option should work out really well. Even if the times aren't perfect, I would imagine this would significantly speed up the process.

Couldn't the creation date/time data also be used as a rough estimate of where each clip goes? You'd have to set the time correctly on each device, but multiple clips from a single device could be more synchronized. I think the filesystem time might be accurate up to seconds.

Do you have any guides on how you got the radio host style effect to your voice? Also what recording mic was that you used in the video (the tazer looking thing) and what one where you using at the end of the video to record your voice! Thanks.

Very cool and useful tip about the delay. Thanks! What are your thoughts on XLR adapters by Beachtek and Juicedlink. There are some good ones that give just as good sound as a separate recording device and there's no need to sync in post.
reply

Yeah, that was the case with my clips, but especially with 132 clips, even that would take a bunch of time to do manually. I like how Pluraleyes also appears to use this data (unlike FCPX) to make assumptions about the order of things.

Sometimes a picture is so bad it won't work with good audio, nor with bad or none at all. Just saying. But I agree that audio is what comes after all the camera stuff. I forgot to add lighting to the list of things to check though.

That's a good illustration of how audio can sound dramatically in a different environment, with the mic oriented differently. Most of the shots are in my quiet office. That last part is after my Oscar party, in my living room.

I havn't seen Life of Pi yet, looks interesting. I've heard some people say its good. But this is the same guy who brought us Hulk, CTHD and Brokeback Mountain, so we'll see if its really all that.

What if my video plays at a different speed than my audio. Trying to sync 1 hour video and 1 hour audio, the beginning is synced and the end is late by a second or two. Why is that happening?
