Griffin figures out how to make a $20 on-camera LED light look good, and Russell reports on the NoLab Digital 8 Super Cartridge, and the Digital Bolex D16 camera finally shipping! Elysian: Super 8 cameras don't need to be repurposed -they are meant to shoot film! If you want to shoot digital, use a digital camera- the optics are better than 30 year old technology. But if you want the lovely look and latitude that only film provides for special occasion or film project, get out that old Super 8!

i made led light with parallel 30x 5mm white led's and 5W resistor, run at 4x aa alkaline batteries in series. my boss didnt believe that the light will run more than 4h so i did a test to prove him. the light run for whole 3 days and we used the light afterwards one more week for more than 2h per day on the same batteries. you can build one for less than $8US. i bet this presented light have some lame led driver that consumes way more power than the leds itself and costs $20US, but way more when you calculate that youll need to change the batteries on every half hours.

I saw that same LED light at WalMart on Black Friday. I think there are probably a lot of the exact same light on the market under different brand names. However for about $10 more I would suggest the NEEWER CN-160 LED light. You can get some cheap Sony camera batteries or use AA batteries and it is a great light to have on hand that comes with some filters and lasts a while. I have used it as a fill on quite a few shoots to balance out the shadows. You can find it on Amazon pretty easily.

Hey can you or someone recommend a versatile camera for a new film maker? Something that has all the all the features (especially the ones i don't know about but will find out i need) for under $500. Don't need it for underwater shots or anything that specific.
Would really appreciate any advice i can get. There are to many, and it feels like each company tries to convince you theirs in the one. Thanks guys!
Ps. great show, always interesting.

Wow the super8 digital cartridge looks awesome. Over the weekend I was looking through one of my cupboards and came across an old Canon 514XL Super8 cine camera I picked up real cheap a few years ago but, like you Russ, I've never got round to getting hold of film for it!

Indy Mogul, I watch all your videos, you guys are great. I am looking to buy a dslr to use it mostly for videos and filming so which of these 2 would you suggest, Canon 70D or Gh3? I know that GH3 can shoot 60fps but canon has the dual pixel AF thing. Please help me decide

Thanks for the LED light review and recommendations on using it better. I just bought and made a video using a Z96 LED light but have no idea what I'm doing with it. I really appreciate your insights as I just begin this journey. Thanks again!

The super 8 cartridge is very interesting - what I don't understand, if it records with a sensor like on a mobile phone, and it artificially adds the 'film' look, then whats the point of it? Why not just shoot with a phone.

Wow those on camera lights look pretty bad when used alone but I think they are meant for using as a supplement while using bigger lights or for like a horror movie or something (not for weddings lol)

At 3: 30 the audio level drops. But I think that is because this video is 2 different edits. First one mixed to -3 and the second to -6. Best to agree to a default audio level mix.

I'm not particularly invested in the success of the Digital Bolex but it makes me happy to know that the people who called it a scam and vaporware have to eat their words.

A 42 LED light for 20 dollars? You can get a 160 LED on camera light for 30 dollars including shipping, on eBay! I bought two of them and they are excellent!

We ordered that light after watching your last episode. But we are on the waiting list. But looking forward to doing some of the hacks.

So you showed how to use the light as a key-light. totally not helpful for what people would be using a light like this for. Dark environments.

Another great video, guys! I've considered one of those LED lights for a while, but also hated the look of on camera lighting.

I have a better one that can be mounted on a tripod and can take sony camera batteries. it was roughly $35. its very useful.

So if you are shooting a wedding and need more light, what would you do if not use an on camera light?
