I guess to achive same cinematic look as for 24 fps 180degree (mean real eye to film organic motion blur preservation) and traverse in PC world of digital, there should be rule of minimum is 30 fps (not 24) to make perfect 1/2 frame match with all country 60hz based displays, It doesn't matter electricity of 50/60 hertz (mean display powering, but users put framerates in pc video card settings to monitor base display frame rate to 60 hers or more, no one will use in pal region 50 hz on LCD instead of 60. And last decades it's preserve 60 hz or 120-240hz for LCD TV. So to avoid judder choppy pictures there is no sense to shoot at 24 or 25 fps until you won't be showing footage at cinema theatre or CRT television sets in pal region at 50hz refresh rate. And therefore use 30p fps footage. I also notic that to preserve cinematic look for 30 fps footage, camera shutter angle is should be 225 or in case of DSLR stays same at 1/48 so it give same amout of blur (except electricity 50/60hz problems. Because rule 1/(double framerate) not working when you show 120fps footage at 120fps display. motion blur dissapears, but somewhy our eyes see both 120 hz speed sharpen images, and blur from our hand to eye shaking with blue as for 24fps 180. Guess all DSLR cinematographers doing something wrong.

I always used to fool poeple around me regarding the f stops and learned them by memory cause I never understood when poeple used to say to me that's easy, it's a question of square ratio (I'm french. O-kay but when I multiply 1. 41. 4, I don't get the same results so what do you mean by that? I never tried to ask too hard 'cause they looked at me as if I was dumb (and I'm sure I am. But now, with your exemple, it took only 1. 34 mn to explain this to me and make it clear as water. Thank you mister!

Someone can have the best equipment in the world and if they don't have the fundamentals down that equipment is useless. The auto-magic features have gotten better over the years but at the same time you need to go in and change to manual to get the settings just right at certain time, and it helps to know what you're doing. The better you can get things in camera the less mucking about you have to do in post: )

Is merging two consecutive frames together in post equivalent to a 720d shutter angle?
With electronic shutter nowadays is it possible to do larger-than-360d directly in camera?
Can I shoot 360d at double the frame rate and drop half the frames in post? Is it the same as a normal 180d, but with added creative flexibility? Is this done in the film industry?

Here is my question: I really love shooting nature fenomenoms, often lightning, but I always have flicker when the lightning hits, my shutter is almost always at 180. how can I calculate shutter degree to avoid lightning flicker?

I honestly thought you were going to talking about the weird math you have to do on set when calculating for how many hours you worked, minus lunch. Still dont understand it.
But this was great!

Am I the only demented one that when I see the L and the I in the flicker written word on the pad run together like that, I see a letter U and the second word on the page takes on a new meaning.

That's one of the reasons I shoot in 30p in Canada to not have to worry about this. For what I do, 24p is overrated. But if I do manage to travel, I'll probably choice to shoot in 24p.

I have this issue with my LED video light. What hertz are those at? Every time I turn them on I have adjust my shutter speed and I still have never been able to nail it down exactly.

This is such a valuable video and I feel every up and coming cinematographer should know this stuff. Great to have it in one place, so thanks for putting it out there!

Are you running out of ideas? Your are getting very basic. I loved your broomstick video, that really helped me out, but this is boring. I'm sorry

I was listening to the video, but when I looked at the small screen of my phone I was surprised to see the F-word on your notes.

I believe, if you're shooting 24fps in a 60hz country, you want a shutter angle of 144 degrees. That would equal 1/60. I think.

At 2: 45 he says that f8 is 8x darker than f2. 8, but that's only a three stop difference, so wouldn't it be 6x darker?

Does the flicker hack also work for LED lights?
I tend to have the flicker problem with LED lighting

Gah, so why would you use a 3 stop ND filter instead of just adjusting to f/8? I assume there MUST be a reason.
