What's the secret to shooting that cinematic lifestyle BROLL that we see more and more in commercials and vlogs? We sit down with travel and adventure filmmaker Matti Hapooja to get his advice. These days the broll you see in your high end commercial or lifestyle video often times takes a looser spray and pray mentality. So, how do you get high end cinematic broll without a shotlist, locked location and huge crew? Watch to find out!

Thank you for this epi. I am doing a solo trip this spring and have different locations and landmarks planned but I haven't thought of story.
This has alleviated my anxiety about which is best camera to bring or should I buy a new gear.
I always give lip service to the idea that the best camera is the one you have and the one you feel the most comfortable with. But when faced with an impending project I fall down the gear/equipment rabbit hole.
Thanks for the important reminder of
Focus on the why.

Spray and Pray Came from video game shooter games back in the 90s. People who sucked at the game would always get guns that would be for Noobs (New Beginners) and hope that when they held the trigger they would end up winning the fight against someone who might be better then them. Now its a term used for anything that shoots in the hopes that you win out with something awesome.

Biggest Tip take away for me is Always shoot in sequence I was missing this secret ingredient for me as I'm learning how to edit as we speak. I noticed My Shots is not always in sequence and maybe I don't have all the shot, it puts me aways without realising why, Thanks Ted & Matti; )

I really love Indy Mogul and all the precious knowledge and little tips and tricks you offer!
But. sorry for me being this frank. if you need a dive master to control your buoyancy while filming underwater you shouldn't be filming underwater at all.

Spray and pray is an old military term. It came out when you know the general direction of your target but don't have site of them. So say you're fighting in a jungle just spray fire in the general direction and pray you hot something.

Spray and pray came from first person shooters when someone would shoot holding down the trigger without aiming praying to hit someone. So the idea translates to filmmakers who shoot everythjng praying they get a good shot.

first time i heard spray and pray being used was back in counter strike 1. 6. referring negatively to people who would just point and just hold down the trigger with an ak47 and hope they land some shots.

this is fascinating and so different from brandon Li style he says he pieces his story after and i think he's the king of cinematic travel footage, im baffled he's not more known lol

Ted, that's quite a life you've got. Question about the gear for mounting lights to the side of the dive rig. They don't look like magic arms, and they look modular. What are they?

2 things: 1. I still need that Indy Mogul sweatshirt. Make it so. 2. How about a CTVET episode where Griffin shoots cinematic b-roll with a high end setup vs not so expensive?

The term spray and pray came from military, just spraying bullets and praying that they hit, instead of in concise bursts. It just naturally translates to camerawork.

I laughed at the part about filming a crew, filming a crew, filming the commercial lol! Great job to the editor, that was a lot of footage to piece together!

Spray and Pray is a term referring to spraying automatic weapons in the general direction of your target and praying that you hit your target.
